  • Could someone recommend a good colour laser printer that is also economical to run? Need something that can do duplex colour prints & doesn't cost too much to replace colour toners.

    • +2

Colour laser replacement toners are expensive, to replace them all you will find yourself paying more for what you bought your printer for. Try your best to go with multi-function mono laser. I bought a brother MFC-L2750DW mono laser, it's going great.

If you really NEED it, then I recommend looking at non genuine toners for you laser printer.

I recommenced MFC-9335CDW colour laser multi-function or the one above, got a USB input so you can save straight onto it, very handy.

i bought an oki c301dn off ebay last year for about $140. duplex and network ready. original toner cost about 80-90, compatible toner around 30 which lasts 2200 page for black and 1100 page for color.

      • How big is the 2750DW? Thinking of buying it

      • +1

There are generic toners available for the model. I purchased one for $60 for black and 3 colours today on eBay.

      • +1

Oki are good value, separate drums and toners

    • How often do you need colour?

    • This is the printer you want, 2 years worth of ink.
currently 20% off with additional 10% from eBay.

These are pretty crap printers, usually built on the XP-100 to XP-300 models. You pretty much pay $500 for a $100 printer and gets a lot of ink with it.

They are good cash-cows for salesmen though, with an average of 47% profit margin across all models.

        • Eh I bought one off the advice of other users here and elsewhere. I want to do a lot of colour printing for anatomy (the print outs from my old mono brother weren't useful) and also needed a scanner.

There's no way I'd pay $500 for one but it was reduced to $383 so I figured it was worth it. (I could have got it for $344 through ebay 10% off but it wasnt available for C&C for any stores in Brisbane). Coincidentally they were also giving away free label makers + tape with this printer which is something my mum actually came in to get too lol.

    • What do you use the printer for? I only use the printer for the label printing for my business, so I use a thermal printer instead, don't need to refill the toners but you'll have to buy labels which are cheaper than toners.

      • Any thermal printers to recommend? I currently use inkjet for labels (laser printers end up jamming with adhesive label sheets after a while) but if thermal is cheaper I'm very interested!

        • I am using Dymo 4XL, the thermal printer isn’t cheaper than the inkjet one, the Dymo is $232 on eBay.

I have this MFD at home. Brother uses a stupid software counter to force you to replace toners even there's still a lot of colour powder left in them. Google "mfc-9330cdw toner reset", I almost always can reset the toner once (sometimes twice!) before the print-outs start to discolour.

    • +1

I have a brother laser printer and it is excellent. It's telling me the toner is low and to change it but that was years ago. Only change it when the pages aren't printing well. Even then, you might be able to trick the printer into using the last bit.

      • I have a brother laser printer

wow what was it like growing up with him :)
        … i'll show myself out

  • @crazyleo Depends on your use case, but when I ran the numbers for my use a late last year, it was by far cheaper and more practical to get a color inkjet AIO and use a local print shop for the times I needed laser. If you get a decent inkjet, the quality can be hard to pick (unless the page gets wet).

    • what did you end up going with? I looked at the new inkjets a while back, but was worried about paper getting wet in the post.

      • I ran the numbers but decided to squeeze a few extra months out of an old inkjet that I had. I'm currently in the market, but haven't made a decision. Fortunately, I don't have too many documents to send by post. One frustration with a lot of the ones I've nearly bought is that the copier and/or scan functions stop working if the black, or sometimes any, ink cartridge is out. I'm still trying to figure out which brands don't have this 'feature'.

Probably better to wait for TGG Ebay 20% off for extra savings.

    • Good guys already has 20% off printers so the discount stacks.

      • ok Thanks. That is a very good price then.

I recently purchased an HP 8745 and the conversation with the salesman went like this:
Salesman: Do you want to buy spare inks?
    Me: No
S: What are you going to do when the ink runs out?
    Me: Buy a new printer.
S: What? You want to buy a new printer if the ink runs out?
Me: How much is a set of coloured ink?
    S: $200
Me: How much is this printer?
    S: $210
    `nough said.

    • +1

I made the mistake of buying spare inks (not from the store, from ebay) and putting them in the stationery drawer.

When I finally went to use them 2 years later the HP printer refused to use them. "Expired".

I bought a non-HP laser printer in protest.

      • +1

I bought a non-HP laser printer in protest.

"protest" by NOT buying an ink and when the ink runs out, you buy a new printer.

The markup of a new printer is razor thin. They get their profits by selling the inks at huge margins.

        • They get their profits by selling the inks at huge margins.

And you waste your money by buying a new printer instead of ink which works out cheaper

    • +4

And you did not listen to the salesman and bought the printer? And when the ink runs out you buy a new printer?

      From the HP Website:

      What's in the box
AP: HP OfficeJet Pro 8745 All-in-one Printer
HP 955 Setup Black OfficeJet Ink Cartridge (~900 pages)
HP 955 Setup Cyan OfficeJet Ink Cartridge, HP 955 Setup Magenta OfficeJet Ink Cartridge, HP 955 Setup Yellow OfficeJet Ink Cartridge: composite yield (~640 pages)

900 pages from the included Black ink and 640 pages from the included color ink, compared to 2,000 pages from the retail Black ink and 1,600 pages from the retail color ink.

Everytime you spend ~$210, you get a new printer (which you do not need?), throw away the old printer and get setup cartridges more than half-empty…

EDIT: From the conversation you had, you probably bought it from Harvey Norman or Domayne. They were giving the typical speech to lead you to one of the Epson EcoTank . These are pretty crap printers, usually built on the XP-100 to XP-300 models. You pretty much pay $500 for a $100 printer and gets a lot of ink with it.

      • +1

We were writing the same thing at the same time!

      • exactly what I thought. who is the smart guy!

      • A new set of cartridge guarantees, for example, 2000 pages.

What is the guarantee that my printer will last until this full set of cartridge can print 2000 pages?

Because that was exactly what happened to my two previous printers. I never had the chance to use up the setup cartridge when the printers died.

Even if it didn't die spending, as an example, $200 for a new set of cartridge even though a new printer (newer model of the same range) has the same price (+/- $30) still makes it better.

        • What is the guarantee that my printer will last until this full set of cartridge can print 2000 pages?

The Duty cycle on your printer is 30,000 pages per month.
2,000 pages is only 2 days of printing at the maximum that the printer can handle.

Even if it didn't die spending, as an example, $200 for a new set of cartridge even though a new printer (newer model of the same range) has the same price (+/- $30) still makes it better.

          How?
Every page you print costs you 10x as much this way.

    • +1

Do you know that printers come with setup ink which have a lower capacity?

The setup black ink in your printer does 900 pages.
A genuine HP XL black cartridge for $56 does 2,000 pages

The setup colour ink does 640 pages.
A genuine HP XL colour cartridge is $41 and does 1,600 pages.

Looking at black only, $200 printer cost
Setup ink is 22 cents per page if you buy a printer when the black is empty.
Genuine XL ink is 2.8 cents per page when you buy a new cartridge

If you run out of colour first you are paying 31.5 cents per page
Genuine XL colour costs 2.5 cents per page

You are much better off buying ink than a new printer…

        Total Cost of Ownership

      • total cost of ownership.

I have one of the earlier Brother MFCs. I have kept costs down by bullsh*tting the printer whenever it says that a drum is too old, I just reset the timer. Otherwise, yes, it wouldnt be worth the candle.

Why the hell did I get rid of that old HP Laserjet 5n that printed 8600 pages to a cartridge…

      • total cost of ownership.

        I beg to differ though.

        I had a 9150 for about 7 years before I "upgraded" to a 8630 inkjet.

Needless to say, the 8630 ha been nothing but trouble since day one.

      • Total Christmas Ornament.

It becomes a paperweight on Dec 25.

  • I've got this printer or a similar model and it's great. It actually works and the mobile app is pretty good too.

But this is for home use. So we don't use it often

  • +1

    Brother make excellent printers.

We use for home and SOHO

    Fuji Xerox suck.
    Samsung suck,
Brother - toners are $$$ but they all are but they are reliable.

    • Brother are reliable. Konica Minolta, HP. Dell printers.

The Samsung printers can suck. Fuji Xerox I don't think necessarily suck though.

      • Samsung no longer in Printer business anymore. Sold off to HP Printing. My Samsung is screwed up on the duplexing and has a 50/50 chance of paper jam whenever that happens.
Had an older Inkjet Brother MFP and was so slow not to mention the colour cartridge was all in one - meaning if you run out of magenta, you will have to buy the entire cartridge with the other inks. Ridiculous and never again.

      • +3

        Brother are reliable.

Except that in these cheaper models their rear fuser roller is too small and as a consequence it tends to overheat and the (rubber?) material on the fuser roller cracks and fails to fuse the toner into the paper. I have the CDW-9340 and the fuser first went after 18 months. Brother replaced it free of charge out of warranty ($200 worth) and the repairer confirmed that this was a common issue across their cheaper models. The replaced fuser lasted another 18 months before it failed again the same way, at which point I replaced it with a fuser roller off ebay. There are plenty of video instructions on youtube that show you how to change this part, which is telling in and of itself.

        • Yep. I've had to replace my fuser roller too

  • Do we get full toner on these or half drums? Have a samsung laser at the moment and all the colors have run out, will cost a bomb to replace and it's a pile of sh*t with their crap software. Scan to PDF crashes 50% of the time.

Thinking it might be cheaper just to buy a new printer.

EDIT. scratch that idea, this model doesn't have duplex scanning. darn

    • 9340CDW does duplex scanning, and does it (not so) well.

::edited to not so well after remembering an issue where i was getting bleed through when duplex scanning.

  • my laser printer runs out of toner, so i'm looking for a cheap b&w laser printer.
    any suggestions ?

    • Fuji Xerox P205b was a good cheap laser.

I don't know if they are still made, if they aren't see what the newer model is

      • currently i have fuji 115, but the toner is more expensive than a new printer (even small 2000 pages toner)

It's 6 cents per page, that isn't overly expensive

        • I've got a fuji P225DW and got the ink cartridge off aliexpress for less than $20 delivered . The legit cartridge was $120 .
Absolutely no problems thus far and it's done over 2000 prints .

        • don't forget about a Drum Cartridge, it is about $70

new printer was only $40 with the same toner and new drum

I would pay a bit more for the MFC-9340CDW as it has Duplex Scanning via the ADF

  • +6

My experiences with the 9340 model.
Not sure how much of this is relevant but i'd like to share in case it helps.

Very happy with just about everything about it.
Firmware updates come occasionally which seems to show they still care about the model.
Prints direct / LAN / WiFi / Google cloud without issue.
Scans to a share on my NAS without issue.
Duplex scanning is good, but occasionally there is bleed through of the opposite pages content.
Full auto duplex printing is reasonably quick and flawless.
Can't comment on software aside from the basic driver as i setup the printer via it's web interface to scan etc…
The front panel menu can be slightly irritating in how long it pauses on a screen before going to the next screen when navigating.
I suspect it has the performance, just the menu might be written to pause for an amount of time.

One negative i need to mention is that the unit seems to claim it is out of toner at some firmware determined point, rather than when it really is out.
I found a process to reset the cartridge via the front panel and have since printed several hundred more pages with no sign of running out.
Reset details here, may also work with the 9330, can not confirm.
    https://printerthinker.com/brother-mfc-9340cdw/

Overall mostly happy except for the bullshit empty cartridge limitation, but that can be worked around.

    • +1

we have the same printer and i agree with this 100%

Regularly get around 500 pages out of an "empty" toner

    • I also have this printer, bought it specifically for the ADF duplex scanning (and some other tidbits).

And I can confirm it's a good printer.

I also bought eBay replacement toner cartridges and had no issue.

    • Just be prepared to replace the fuser rollers when the paper starts coming out of the printer crinkled and the toner smears off the page. See my comment above.

  • I'm still using inkjets in 2018 as my home office printer. Ink refills on eBay are cheap and you don't have to use branded refills

Couldn't justify the outlay for a laser printer due to the cost of toners since I don't print much paper these days

I use the duplex ADF scanner mostly. Handy for reducing paper and physical folders. I use digital signatures for signing PDF's too so I am almost running a fully digital home office.

  • Had one of these, started to squeak after 6 months of printing and after 12 months it started chewing up paper and would constantly get jammed, tossed it out on the street for collection, would never buy it again. We did print about 2000 sheets of mostly text but you expect better from a printer that sells itself like this one does.

  • Bought Canon MX926 on boxing day a few years ago for $118.
Canon cashback promotion: $150 cashback. Earn $32…

One set of refillable cartridges: $20
Refill inks from China: $1.2 per 100ml (could last tens of thousands of pages) or $22 per 65ml genuine Canon inks for their refillable models.

    • Yeah, but the Canon MX926 is an inkjet, whereas this is a laser. If you don't print much like me, the inks on an inkjet usually dry out. With laser printer, drying out doesn't seem to be a thing.

  • I have one of these for my home office. Feature rich, a little tricky to get setup for scan to email but overall very pleased with the printer.

  • Can someone tell me if you can duplex scan through it's android app?

I have HP LaserJet Pro and it's stupid android app doesn't do duplex scan, so I have to use Windows app (or through it's touchscreen) to scan duplex.
Have sent emails to the developer the last 1+ years and still not available.

    • +1

Hi Dave, this printer cannot duplex scan. It's newer Brother… MFC 9340CDW can do this, and also has dual scan which allows single pass - $450 to $500 purchase.

      • Wait for one of the sales. I got mine for 378 delivered

      • Ok ok, my bad. Thanks damian

  • Think the best thing about this printer is <$300.. For those who claim work expenses.. you know what to do.

  • +2

My research notes for criteria that matter to me, in case it helps anyone else on the fence:

    • +1

I have the 9140CDN which is for the most part the same printer with exception of some of the newer connectivity methods. It's a good printer, though the 3 separate colour toners don't last very long if doing large colour photo/image prints. The toner's are also very expensive if purchasing 'genuine' toners.

The scanner on the printer is ok… but only if you are scanning A4 style documents. It is no good as a receipt scanner, and it cannot do direct duplex scan (you must instead pass documents through feeder, then turn them over). If you want to do receipt scan, you would likely need to sticky tape them on to A4. That being said, there is so many apps now for iphone etc that can do a pretty reasonable job of imitating "scanning" using the phone's camera.

Things I like on the printer is the auto power-save, duplex laser colour printing, print speed, and the big paper tray cassette. It has also been very reliable; I've had no issues with paper jamming or rollers failing.

The printer takes up a fair bit of desk space for a home office (~50cm deep, and 45x45cm width/height), and is heavy #########.

  • Great price. I’ve had this printer for the last 2 years and still going strong. I don’t print very often (occasional boarding pass or recipe so maybe a handful of pages each month) but having AirPrint that just works is a wife-pleaser. Scanning from the iOS app just works too although the app is a bit clunky.

Third party toner off eBay works just fine.

  • Inspired me to get my A3+ ix6800 back up and running. Had to pressure clean the head in the end, and a messy 3 or so hours it has been. Thought it was totally gone but brought it back.

    • You probably just blew through $30 worth of ink .

      • Nup. 250ml bulk ink. I've been using the same bottles for about 10 years.

  • I have this printer, top notch. Irritated that I missed out on another :(

I have some toner for this printer, that I didn't use as mine died. It was a 5X pack with 2 BKs and a M C and Y cartridge. If anyone's in the Hobart area, I'm happy to give it away

    • If you do not get any takers here you should on Gumtree!

      • If only it were that easy. I've been trying to give it away for about 4 months on there. People seem to have a distrust for aftermarket cartridges.

        • Wow I wouldn't have thought you would struggle to give it away.

Maybe you will have better luck selling them on eBay haha

        • @spaceflight: I had considered that, but I'd rather not have to deal with the added expense/potential liability to refund should one of the 5 cartridges not work (although I don't imagine there'd be an issue as this type have always worked flawlessly for me).

I'd donate them to my work, but their Brother printers are an older cartridge annoyingly.

      • Damn, i wished you were in Sydney, i picked up this printer from a kerbside council collection but without the toners, all the other functions i could test seem to work fine, just don't want to chance on buying replacement toners then find there's a problem, none of my acquaintances have this model otherwise i could borrow theirs to test it out

        • I'm sure if you offered to cover the postage LaScrooge could send them to you :)

        • @spaceflight: yeah but knowing AP they wouldn't charge any less than 10 bux for such a bulky and heavy package, would you know roughly how much it would cost me to get it shipped here?

        • @bonz:

I dont know how big the boxes are or how heavy so I cant help with the price.

A 5kg AP satchel is about $18 if they fit in that.

        • @spaceflight: i don't know how big the 5kg box is but i wouldn't imagine these 5 cartridges would fit in it, i had looked at these at HN they weigh about a Kg each from memory.

        • @bonz:

          I googled the satchel
          Dimensions: 510 x 435mm

If you can find dimensions of the toners you can then work out if they will fit.

        • @spaceflight:thanks spaceflight

  • Still waiting waiting waiting for a sharply reduced A3 colour laser

  • Thanks OP - bought one for the home office. Great price.

  • I bought non genuine toner for my brother 3150 and want happy with it, done colours were quite different to what they appeared on screen, some shades of green were very faint. Found the blue cartridge had leaked somehow so expecting to need to discard. Only had the replacement cartridges for a year, printed nowhere near the capacity and the printer is reporting one of the colours as needing replacement (not the blue one).

Disappointed with my non genuine experience.
