    Woolies, you suck!

I went into Woolies Leichhardt NSW this morning, and this is what happened:
    * I had 4 rewards cards, one for myself and each household family member. Bought 4 SIM cards for $10 each, as separate transactions, which the cashier was happy to do.
    * However, it would not accept my eGift card for payment. Gave an error that said invalid payment method for this purchase. I said maybe eGift cards cannot be used for service desk purchases (e.g. Opal card), but the cashier was adamant that they could be used for Opal cards. So I had to pay with an ordinary card (so $10 cost rather than $9.50 cost). Strike 1 for Woolies: Not accepting their own eGift card on all purchases in their store.
    * One of the rewards cards already had $10 off the next shop on it, so I did not have to pay for it. At the time I though this was a positive, turns out to be a negative (see below).
    * I was worried about scanning the rewards cards to get the points, doing as separate transactions, so I did not check the backs of the packs. Silly.
    * I then did an $11 shop and did not get $10 off when scanning a rewards card. I was expecting $10 off, but was unsure if there might be a lag adding the points? So I assume this is the targeted aspect of this deal, which I did not know at the time. Also, I paid using my eGift card, the same one that did not work as the service desk, and it worked absolutely fine.
    * I then drove home. Half way home, I casually looked at one of the SIM packs, and it was marked "EXPIRY DATE: 30/11/2017". I checked the others, they were all the same … WTF?! So I did a u-turn and headed straight back to the store.
    * The service desk cashier seemed a bit incredulous that all the cards had expired (I guess they thought I had swapped them out or something?!), and went and checked, and sure enough, every single pack they had in stock was expiry 30/11/2017, all of them, around 20 packs. Strike 2 for Woolies: Selling an expired product.
    * So I said that I will have a refund, thank you, since these are likely to be as useless as 4 month old milk. The cashier was unsure, as she believed they could not give refunds on SIM packs without manager's approval, and the manager was away for 1 hour, and could I come back later? No, I could not, so she tried anyway, and it worked on the first pack. I got a refund on 3 of the packs.
    * With the 4th pack, the one paid for with $10 off your next shop rewards points, the cashier said "if I refund that purchase, you will not get $10 back on your rewards card". I asked if they were sure, and they were, presumably had seen this before. So there was no benefit to returning it, so I'm left having paid $10 for an expired SIM pack! Strike 3 for Woolies: Not being able to refund payments made with rewards dollars, even when they have sold a broken product.
    * The cashier then went to put the expired SIM packs back on the shelf, and I said you can't do that, they have expired, they are now useless, you should stop selling them. The cashier said "that's for the managers to decide, it's all computerized, they know all the details of what we have in stock, and they decide what to pull from the shelves". Strike 4 for Woolies: Not giving your service desk staff the power to remove expired product from the shelf.
    * The cashier then put the packs back, and I left, annoyed. Strike 5 for Woolies: Knowingly putting expired product back onto the shelf so you can sell it to some other sucker.

For the 5 reasons above, I repeat: Woolworths, you suck!

P.s. voting negative as requested by the OP, targeted deal, plus the reasons stated above.

      Thanks for the info.
I’m pretty sure that if you return an item that’s been paid for with ‘money off your shop,’ you will get the points back as long as they scan your Rewards card when issuing the refund.

just read your post, after returning from woolies and purchasing one.
and the expiry date on mine is December 2017!
      but
did the call and activated it without any problems, was expecting some issue but nothing came up

The woolworths rewards points system is quite dodgy. I was shopping online, opted to redeem my points - went to add an item to my basket and the points were already taken out before the payment processing stage.

I would contact Woolies customer care to get your points added back on, they were pretty good when I lost 4000 points!

I just called Woolworths rewards (phone 1300 10 1234 ->, Option 1: Woolworths rewards ), and calmly explained the situation. They sighed when I said that all the SIM packs at the store had expired, obviously they wanted to say just take it back and exchange it. Then the representative spoke to a supervisor, and then came back and said "unfortunately we will not be able to put the $10 back on your card at this time." I asked why, they said "because you have used the $10 on a purchase". I said but Woolworths Leichhardt supermarket say they are simply unable to refund my purchase onto the rewards card, despite acknowledging that they sold an expired product, and now you at Woolworths rewards will not refund as I have made purchase… do you not see the logical problem here, that there is no mechanism to get a refund if Woolworths sells a bad product and the customer pays with reward dollars? They had no answer other than to say they would not be able to put the points back on. I expressed my dissatisfaction with this answer, and that it was unacceptable to sell a expired product that cannot be refunded. They had no response, and just went quiet. And that was the end of the call.

P.s. At no point did they say that Woolworths supermarkets could refund the 2000 points or $10 off your next shop, so I have to suspect that this is really not possible.

So the Woolworths supermarket cannot help, and Woolworths Rewards cannot help. It seems the only thing left to do is to try to activate it at the end of April (which is when I next need to port), and if it works then just go with it; and if it does not work then I guess I'll file a TIO complaint against Woolworths Mobile as I was sold an already expired unrefundable service by the Woolworths group. This whole situation seems totally bonkers to me.

        • That's crazy!! I messaged the Woolworths people on FB when my 4000 points went astray and they were pretty quick at putting it back on. Perhaps try that avenue also??!

For refunds on purchases made in store with eGift cards or Rewards points, I ask for a REFUND CARD (a gift card valid for 6 months). Just ask that it be processed as normal refund to that card. Worked every time workout hassles.

Loss of points during online purchase (system cancelled order in my case) is different & they put points back on card after checking points were never used in purchase.

Store staff may see a refund on purchase bought with points as more complex (so don't ask for points refund!), but they can simply issue the refund card to the value of the returned purchase.

        • +3

Take it back without the receipt. They have a policy where they will refund items under a certain $ amount with no receipt. Personally I'd keep it as these will still activate way past the expiry date.

    • +1

All packs have had their expiry extended. They aren't useless.

    • +1

They are likely to still work despite being expired.

  • +6

    Bought one, no points received.
    Proof
    Expiry: 15/04/2019

  • hey. so is it possible to use one of these per month?
as in use one now, which i just activated,
and next month use another sim for 10$
    is that possible at all?
    thank you

    • +1

Of course, if you activate them one by one.

You can’t port between sims from the same provider though, so if you’re wanting to keep the same number (or avoid having too many active sims in your name), you’ll have to port to a different provider & back again.

      • +1

        ok. thank you.
i do care about the number. have had it for like ever.
        thanks anyway

    • +2

If you don't care about the number, just get a new number every month.

ffs bought this and didnt get any points….. FML

  • +2

I bought early morning around 8am. Unable to pay with egift card as it said it was a gift card purchase. No bonus points too.

    • +2

I had the egift card payment fail too. It's really strange, a SIM kit is not a gift card. The service desk person had never seen it happen before, and the same egift card worked fine for buying normal groceries straight afterwards. It makes egift cards much less attractive if they start to come with restrictions on what you can and cannot buy with them.

      • Right,it seems you can not convert it to plastic ones any more, read from the discussion topic in the forum.

        • +2

You can buy the physical cards through RACQ @ 5% off with free registered post, other states may have similar deals available.

        • +1

          @headphonejack:
Didn't see that option, thanks. About to stock up again with RACQ.
"Choose between the traditional plastic card or an eGift card for fast delivery via email."

        • Which topic are you referring to?

        • @illumination: You can find it under Everyday Gift Cards forum topics.

    • +3

The restriction isn't mentioned in the T&C's.

      • Good catch. Ironically those terms and conditions do NOT say that the gift cards can be used at woolworths supermarkets (I guess it's just implied as it can be a "Woolworths Supermarkets Gift Card"), but they definitely don't exclude the purchase of SIM kits. There is a general exemption against obtaining cash (which is definitely not what a SIM kit is). It does say for "Woolworths online (Woolworths.com.au)", which presumably would have similar restriction to the supermarkets, that they can be used for items "Excluding Online photo processing, online floral, online Gift Cards". So again no mention of SIM kits, very weird that it did not work.

    • Strange, I just bought Telstra's $30 starter kit (on special for $15), with egiftcard, and it worked. I assume it'd work for E
      Woolies starter kits too

Finally found stock. No points rewarded with an EDR card that hasn't been associated with a Woolworths Mobile account.

I purchased one, but no points are awarded:-(

  • Has anyone successfully activated an expired SIM online?

      Yes

Received targeted email offer, bought with that Rewards card (staff member checked everything & confirmed I should qualify according to offer T&C) - no points added on receipt😞
Points may appear 5 days after end of promo…

Add another to the list - eGift card refused at POS, received email but no points added.

    A LATE UPDATE: NOT TARGETED!!!
Saw this Woolies Rewards promotional notice beside $30 SIM packs (similar one for $45 packs). Surprised this wasn't posted long ago! Admittedly refers to $30 pack at original price.

These are same details contained in email I received outlining this deal.
So not targeted, just present Rewards card when purchasing!

Should provide enough proof if challenging Woolies to recover points. Good luck.

Bought 4 packs on 4 Rewards cards at one time tonight after seeing this. (Previously only bought one on card that received email.) May go back for more tomorrow (last day) as local store had plenty.
Paid $0 by using Woolies Dollars on cards.
Staff member was impressed with my Rewards savvy ways - then I showed her the 2000 points offer😀

    • Thank you so much!

    • No luck here unfortunately.

        Ditto.

Checked again this morning and no points :-(

        • Same😠
I received offer email for that card.
          Time to contact W.

How we got our 2000 points by contacting rewards by phone & my copy & paste Chat transcript!

  • +1

    My second online chat attempt:

At first the rep tried to argue that because I'd only paid $10 for the starter pack, I'd received a great deal because a $20 discount is better than 2000pts. He finally caved after I replied and said:

The T&Cs for the 2000 bonus points promotion do not specify a price which must be paid in order to receive the points.
All they state is that you must purchase either a $30 or $45 starter pack, which I have done.

    I am now 2000 points richer :)

    • +1

      Glad to read that👍
It's hard for Rewards to argue against their own T&C.
