Can this be used in a kid's room as a play mat?

    • +1

My local bunnings only have squares with holes, so it doesn't work as a kids play mat.

      This might be better.

The ones with holes are good for camping and outdoor use. Lets the water drain through :)

Just got a pack of 4 at my local Bunnings, I got the grey colour and no holes in them, I also saw green and blue.

Has anyone tried putting a futon on top of this and turning it into a bed?
They say that hard surface is good for the back. I've got back disc issues.

    • How do you mean? As in a mattress on top of the foam?

I think they’d be OK, but they tend to be very firm, so could be alright but I guess just bare that in mind.

I have lower back disc injury. I use a few sleeping bags, doona, etc. I fold the doona, sleeping bags to size of single bed to lay on, then a towel on top.
This was my attempt to kind of replicate the physio treatment bed. ie, alot of firmness, but just enough softness so your not terribly uncomfortable.
I then have 4 large cushions from an old couch I threw away, I lay on floor, then move 3 or 4 couch cushions, 1 at a time, across under my lower leg. This creates the '90-90' position. It was recommended by chiro, it is like you are sitting at 90 degree angle, but all the pressure seems to be taken off the lower back. Of course, depending on thickness of couch cushion, you would need more ot less cushions to get that laying down 90 degree posture.
My neurosurgeon suggested just moving feet back while laying down, so knees are up a bit, is similarly effective for reducing pressure on lower back. However I find the 90-90 position much more comfortable and seems to undo the damage/strain caused by sitting for too long.
Edit: if you dont have a few old doonas or sleeping bags around, dont go out and buy them new. There would be cheaper solutions.

      • Thank you for your tips!
So just place a few old quilts on the floor?
How do you keep it clean?

Just adding a voice to this. I've had lower back pain for years but then a few months back started just throwing down a couple blankets and a towel on my tile floor and sleeping on there. It's made a big difference ..

Having said that I'm thinking to grab a few of these mats for potential winter use, get a little distance off the floor.

As for keeping clean .. it's basically a blanket and a towel, just chuck em in the wash from time to time :)

        • +1

I put the sleeping bag 1 on top, with the outside of sleeping bag being the top layer (outside of sleeping bag doesnt really get dirty) .
Plus I put large towel on top. Then change towel whenever it seems dirty. You could also just put actual sheets on top to make it look nicer.
For vacuuming under it, it can just be rolled up is easiest. Be careful lifting it all due to weight tho. 2 doonas, a sleeping bag, and a blanket cant have some weight to it.
Oh, and another tip. Althought laying down on firm surface in 90-90 postition feels incredibly relieving on lower back, when my back is very bad, I have to be careful to make sure i get up and move around every 20 minutes or so .
Laying in that position (or any position) too long will usually stir up lower back injury .
Check with GP, i get a referral for 5 free physio visits per year. They will be able to help more. Ive seen physio/chiro over 100 times in last few years, thats where my insight comes from .
Any more questions, im happy to help. Should definitely seek a physio help tho . Physio thru public hospital is free. And GP may be able to refer to private for 5 visits per year

        • @ozzpete: thanks! I will try this setup :)

        6x 60cmx60cm mats for $9.99
That's $4.16 a square metre.. coincidently the same price per metre for Bunnings mats now too!

  • will buy from local store

  • We use these under our tree for the cats to sit on. The holes mean the rain doesn’t pool.

    • +1

why can't the cats sit on the ground?

'cause they're a bunch of pussies

      • Ground is too dirty?

          You will get dirty pussies

The cats sat on the mat.

  • good for inside the tents

    • or outside (under)

these make great covers for desks and can be used as mouse mats. 2 cover my desk completely, nice and soft for forearms

    • An interesting idea. I'll get some and measure their resistance, might be a cheap anti-static mat if the black ones use carbon, unlikely though…

I hate the feel of concrete on my feet in my garage - could these be used to cover my entire garage?

    Thanks OP

Great for shower rooms while camping (ones with holes) - Water drains away and you don't get grass/mud on your feet

    • Thanks for that great idea Darkii. And thanks OP. 50cm is probably just right size for my shower tent too.

  • Anyone know if these can be used outside under rain, sun….? Was thinking to put it around the trampoline in case the kids fall out of it and won’t hit the concrete ground. Thanks

    • +1

      won't provide much protection - 12mm thick

      • I can double the thickness if it is cheaper than crushed-up rubber

    I've found the following uses:

    • floor mat in the garage near a workbench - they are fairly tough for just walking on
    • cheap sound damper material for walls or ceiling - nowhere near as good as actual acoustic foam tiles but they can help
    • absorbent material for colorbond fencing for where your neighbour's kids play cricket.. helps reduce the noise of the ball hitting the fence and protects the fence from minor dints
    • around the pool or garden when you need to kneel down (e.g. to clean the pool filter) and don't want to do it on bare ground, timber etc
    • edge protection for the garage where you might have doors opening and don't want to chip paint (e.g. use them on walls or pillars
    • doormat for tents when camping

  • is this suitable for babies to crawl on?

  • +1

i got them under kids blow up pool… makes a nice soft base for it

  • Similar things this Saturday at Aldo, only those are 60x60 and come in a 6-pack. Bunnings have evidently done the maths and worked out a cheaper deal based on actual area. By my maths Bunnings are $4.16 and Aldi $4.64 per square metre.

Whatever, have used for years and have so many uses.

  • Has anyone tried using these for a home gym? Will it provide protection for dropped weights

    • I bought them for home gym use. Should offer some protection of the floors. Unfortunately they aren't useful for my usage: the top surface is very slippery, my runners keep slipping…

  • +1

Woo… scored a couple of packs of black.
    Thanks go to OP.
Only 1 box of black left, but plenty of green and red at Oxenford, Gold Coast.
Did not see any of the "holey" type, think the're all gone.

  • Good if you want to practice your jiu-jitsu and choke some of your friends or family out.

    Tap, Snap or Nap :)
