I’m seriously considering one of these, but would much prefer this deal from last year!

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/305253

    • Yes - that was a pretty good deal.
Since then we've added diagnostics and tax logbook. We keep on upgrading (and improving battery performance and download times for example). Oh -
and just added Trends and Servicing to Android. :-)

      • Well I’ll keep holding off until this gets cheaper or I find something else better or similar for a cheaper price!

  • Price in title?

    Is this a towbar?

I can't wuite what it connects my car to
    Or what it does.

    • GOFAR's a bit of a swiss army knife for your car. The main reasons people buy are:
      - EASY TRIP LOGGING - If you have to log driving for work GOFAR makes it easy. The trips are logged automatically with a reading for odometer at trip start and end - so you just swipe right to make a trip "business" and then you can export that for your accountant or manager as needed.
      - SECURE, EASY DIAGNOSTICS - GOFAR is pin protected and encrypted. It's small enough to leave in the car (compared to some of the chunkier devices you find on eBay) - and as soon as an error is detected you get a notification on your mobile. Nice and easy.
      - FUEL SAVINGS - the unique Ray display gives simple feedback on driving (based on quite complex data inputs). If you follow it and keep the Ray blue, drivers have saved an average of 8.7% on fuel across 6 tests and over 100,000km of driving. Fuel costs add up and 90% of our drivers use the Ray - but not everyone does.

We do other stuff too - roadside assist at a fraction of the cost of the big guys, mobile servicing, alerts when insurance or rego is due.

You can get aspects of what GOFAR does from other solutions. Not seen anything that does it all though or so smoothly. Hope that explains.

Website has a whole lot of marketing. Tiny explanation of how it works. Absolutely 0 expert external testing.

    • But channel 7 reviewed it so it must be good!

    • Lots of customer reviews on Facebook and more on eBay and Google. So far over 80% of reviews are 5* and we're improving all the time.

A lot of what this can do is achievable with a $10 OBD device and a $5 Android app.
It sounds like these guys might have invested a little into their app, but i'd bet a lot of it is available in other apps.
The OP deal might be ideal if it offers comprehensive fully automated logging, otherwise these are great…

    Torque Pro
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torq…

    Torque Lite (free)
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torq…

    Dash command
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.palmerperf…

    • Are there any cheaper devices that can log trips for tax purposes? I do like that you complete a trip, mark it as business and it will log it all for you.

      • There was this android app recently

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/358610

      • The thing is, the device isn't the smarts, it's the app that would be important to you.
Bluetooth OBD devices are typically available for $4 and upwards.
The physical device connects to the vehicle diagnostic port and feeds data to an app, usually via Bluetooth.
Have a search for "OBD" on your app store of preference and see if there are any apps there that meet your needs, then just grab a cheap OBD device from eBay.

I have a couple of apps that i use for diagnostic purposes, so can't recommend what i'm using for automated logging.

        • Their OBD2 dongle buffers the logs internally though, that's the big difference. It keeps logging without phone.

Bluetooth dongles can't handle the datarate for many cars, wifi has less problems. It is futile logging with Chinese dongle and app because it will screw up too often.
Supposedly this one's internal smarts and buffering is fairly good.

    • There are some good devices but I'd be a little concerned about plugging in an unencrypted device into my $20,000 car, unless I knew a bit about the company behind it.

The apps you mention are great. Torque is pretty awesome. DashCommand is good too. We do some of what they do and more. They do some of what we do and more. If you just want diagnostics for example and don't mind plugging in each time then a low cost dongle and Torque can work just fine.

If you want tax tracking, improved economy, the ability to have two drivers both send their driving on a shared car to the cloud then GOFAR is worth considering.

That's $10 off the price it's been for a while. I got one off ebay about 3 weeks ago (for $129).

Just a note about after sales customer support from this mob. The auction says Express Post or express courier is included in the price. Mine was sent standard mail and took 12 days! So I thought they might offer a bit of a refund for not sticking to what the auction says and the inconvenience (say - $20). I reckon that'd be reasonable. I thought they'd offer, then after a while I asked - no response. Hey I still haven't given ebay feedback.

To the product - yes it does what it says, but it's quite binary - either blue for ok, or red for bad. Very little in between. If you do dab the brake or accelerate a tad more than gently it starts to glow a bit red, but I'd want much more feedback than it gives. Maybe it needs a way for the user to adjust the sensitivity to suit their driving. My first drive with it it barely went red and I was ranked third best driver. Maybe I just don't need it. If I try I can get my 10 year old car under 5 litres per 100km.

All the info is viewed in the phone app, there is no web site access to it.

    • Hi wfdTamar,
Sorry - we track [email protected] and live chat on GOFAR.co religiously and we're pretty reasonable on Facebook. We recently changed our shipping person on eBay and failed to tell them to express ship - got that fixed now. Apologies.

Data export is created and we plan to add in web access.

Will GOFAR work in my car?
GOFAR works in any petrol, diesel or petrol hybrid car built since Jan 2007 and many earlier models. Try our compatibility checker.

so its just an OBD2 reader

    • It’s more than that. It reads obd2 info but it’s software uses it to provide the logging and economy display and stats.

      • I doubt there is any special software in the OBD it would be just the app I would imagine. Next question, could you use another OBD with the app.

        • There's a bucket load of work on the firmware, the app and the cloud infrastructure.

Currently you cannot use another OBD with the app. It's pretty specifically designed to work with GOFAR's hardware and code.

  • This would be better https://torque-bhp.com/ as you can use the data in home assistant https://home-assistant.io/components/sensor.torque/ etc

    • Agree that Torque is good. Some of our customers have found it a little technical for them.

Thx for the home-assistant.io link. Interesting.

      • What makes your less technical?

        • It's still pretty technical under the surface but we've invested a lot in user design to keep it clear and simple. We walk you through the installation nice and easy and the app and hardware are designed to play nicely together because we make them both. We've had all sorts of customers a bit concerned about getting up and running yet they've found the installation very straightforward (and fast).

We've seen that installing apps and setting up to connect to an eBay dongle can be a bit daunting for some people and the support is not always there if they hit a snag. Snags are not uncommon as the app company is different to the hardware company (and you're also involving myriad different phones and car models).

We try to apply our customer friendly approach across the whole offering. Probably the website is where we most need to explain things better - the comments on OzBargain confirm we have work to do there.

One other comment - our initial customers were pretty technical and comfortable with diagnostics etc. Most current customers are not - and really want a good simple tax logging solution as that is painful, so we need to make sure we work for them.

  • Yep. These devices are all about marketing. Seen some straight up obd2's sell for like $60 when they using a $2 ELM327 with a fancy sticker.

I should get on the bandwagon too and target uneducated people.

I must admit the app does seem really well designed. The Torque Pro while feature packed would be nice if it looked nicer you know

    • We try to talk to customers too and find out what they want and what they like and dislike about current options.
We've had well over 3,000 conversations with drivers to get to this point.
We've tried to do genuinely new and useful things - and picked up a couple of patents along the way.

      Glad you like the app.

The hardware is custom designed by us too so that everything works well together - bluetooth connections can be finnicky and I just don't think we could have got the reliability if we were using someone else's hardware (or the level of security we wanted). So, there's no low cost ELM327 in our device. Nothing wrong with ELM327 code base that everyone's copying btw either. It was good code written by knowledgeable people.
