  • Hi Everyone,

I’m Kris and I recently (last month) joined GOFAR. I’m hoping that I can bring you more Australian based automotive and car related deals, bargains and savings. We are a young Aussie startup and we all get things wrong from time to time, so I hope that I’ve been able to make it right with this deal.

Also if you have issues, ideas, see something that we could improve on in the website, see something we might be interested in or just about anything feel free to reach out to me directly at [email protected]

PS. It’s hard to get seen in a busy world, so if you do mention this deal or share it thank you very much!

    Well done

    • Thank you Gimli!

Friendly advice, describe your product in a few words and use it in the title :D

    • Good tip! Do you mean on here?

      • I think he means anywhere. It's not clear what your product does and how it works. I'm guessing GPS app + OBD engine efficiency monitoring from the descriptions I've found but it's really not clear. What does this do that Waze + OBDLink + GPS tracking app don't?

    • Updated description. Thx.

  • +1

I'm completely lost. What does this give me over watching my car's fuel efficiency on the dash (or even just gently accelerating and braking), and using a GPS equipped phone to save a log? I can't even tell which cars the connector is compatible with. With a standalone GPS or Google Maps I could even avoid traffic issues. Speeding alerts not implemented yet on the "ray"? I already have that on my TomTom.

    • +1

So true. I think we all know that accelerating less saves fuel. I'm hardly interested in looking at an app to see how my accelerating is going this morning.

      • Well it won't save you money if you're watching your phone because you'll be more likely to crash, and viewing the data later won't save you money either. Better a GPS with traffic app to avoid stop start parking lot hell.

    • A couple of things.

You can do GPS trip tracking the way you mentioned, however if you're claiming expenses there is a bit more work to do. Basically it's just work you or someone else has to do. The nice thing about this is, it's able to gather all the information together for you so you can then claim what youre entitled to without the work and hassle.

With watching the car's fuel efficiency and doing it that way, you can probably get the results from doing it like that. However it's little actions that make up the difference and count. Hard braking then starting again, speeding, speeding up and slowing down, where you could've slowed down and coasted then picked back up. Just from personal experience, when something is in front of you flashing red when you know you're not being as good as you can be. It has an affect, and it's curbed my behaviour. (Granted I work for GOFAR so take what I say with a grain of salt but it is true). It makes me more aware of my actions when I might be on autopilot. Not to mention, the trials we've done are saving fuel for people. 60,000KM in a set of trials have saved an average of 14.7% so on average it is working even with these technologies out there.

      Hope this helps.

There are plenty of apps for logging car related expenses on Android. e.g.

As for watching a distracting red/blue indicator while you're driving, that sounds about as safe as texting while driving. Much easier and safer to just get into the habit of doing all those things. In all seriousness are you not worried about being sued for distracting the driver?

Looking at your descriptions I'm not convinced you have a worthwhile product at all. You could have put most of this into a single app. Why the hardware development?

        • +6

As for watching a distracting red/blue indicator while you're driving, that sounds about as safe as texting while driving.

LOL at someone comparing texting when driving to seeing an indicator change colour. Seeing as you're so easily distracted I guess you don't use the stereo, AC or any other controls…. Whoo watch out each inductor flash is the equivalent of a SMS!

In all seriousness are you not worried about being sued for distracting the driver?

And there we have it, the driver that causes us to have all the warning stickers on everything like "Warning exhaust pipe is hot" and "do not stick your head out of sunroof when driving".

I find it quite amazing that you talk about apps doing the same which is fair enough but you now claim that this system with it's dedicated light that your can see in your peripheral vision is somehow unsafe. Your app idea means you have to start the app, mount it in view, plug a charger in and keep the screen on whilst driving. Which of the two would be used everytime you drive?

        • @Maverick-au:

Laugh all you like. Anything that requires your constant attention in the car to be effective is going to be bad news. A good driver isn't the one that can handle the most distractions. A good driver is the one that avoids and prioritizes them. And if you haven't noticed, devices that distract are being removed all the time, not added. P platers can no longer use an on-phone GPS app while driving. Technically there are only a handful of functions you can use on your phone while driving.

Reductio ad absurdum and personal attacks/appeals to authority are two of the weakest forms of criticism.

        • +1

All of them require you to have your phone connected to it. If you forget then you miss the trip. So if you are using it to claim expenses then it's a little annoying.

Also the other connectors you linked don't have onboard storage. With this you can literally plug it in and it'll record your trips without having to have your phone connected each trip..

LOL your arguments keep getting more absurd. Explain how this requires constant attention?

Only in Australia the land of the stupid where we keep avoiding the real issue which is uneducated drivers on the road who think they have a right to drive. Let's keep tinkering around the edges and creating more laws, regulations and rules whilst ignoring the real issue which is the Kellogg's method of issuing drivers licences.

Don't you think that decent driver education and training like they do in Germany along with keeping people who fail testing off the roads is the answer to reduce the road toll or are you one of the people that think speed cameras make a difference along with your fog lights and Kleenex on the parcel shelf?

        • +1

If reading the website properly, the hardware provided is something you can attach directly to the cars motherboard. That is way more accurate than just relying on GPS.

I actually think it's an interesting concept.

        • -6

          @Maverick-au:

LOL I have no interest in talking to you any more. What you think of me personally is of no interest.

I hope you realize you're on an Australian board calling Australia the land of the stupid. Now that's clever!

        • @harkoliar:

OBD is not new and there are phone apps and hardware that do that and have done for some time. They can even add instrumentation to your dash (though I'm not sure of the legality of doing that in various states).

Type "OBD" into the Google Play app search.

        • -1

@Maverick-au: > we keep avoiding the real issue which is uneducated drivers on the road

Incorrect, the real issue is 18-25 year old males (if it was women I couldn't bring this up of course because of the outrage this would cause).

Education hasn't done very much so far so I doubt more is going to fix the most dangerous group of drivers on the roads.

Basically the number of idiots who greatly over estimates their own abilities when it comes to driving is highest in this group.

        • +2

@syousef: Seriously? You are so out of touch with reality. Your comments make you look like a fool. Your examples are based on nonsense and pure exaggeration.

If the deal is not for you, then don't bother. Feel free to use the "hide" button at the top if these devices offend you so much.

Same as sending an SMS… now I know I have heard it all…

You couldn't make up the rubbish you just sprouted. You really think there is no correlation between Australia with a ten minute driver test which has one of the highest road tolls for a first world country and a place like Germany where getting a license takes a long time, thousands of euros, includes things like first aid training and where the road toll is half of Australia!

Not to mention that in Germany they don't police speed like we do here but they actually enforce strict lane discipline, following distances and so forth. And in Germany they don't care about burnouts or similar offences as long as they are being done safely and with consideration for others whereas in Australia we have specific hoon laws and other rubbish. In Germany the penalty is 20 or 30 euros for using a handy whilst driving, in Australia it's four or more points and many hundreds of dollars. Driving in Germany is a lot more relaxed then Australia where there are cops behind every bush waiting to get you for doing 3 kph over the limit.

But no clearly the problem is 18-25 males (which clearly other countries like Germany don't have). You keep supporting double demerit points, learner log books and all the other ineffective and draconian systems that do nothing but increase our road toll if it helps you sleep at night.

"Remember: Legal use of mobile phones can also be distracting. Consider if it is important and the demands of the traffic before using your mobile. The safest option is often to wait until you are parked out of the line of traffic."

Anything that takes your eyes off the road, even for a moment, needs to be managed carefully. Audible alerts would work better here….or ridicule. Ozbargainers love ridicule. And downvoting.

        • @harkoliar: It plugs in to the car's on board diagnostic port (which lives under the steering wheel). It then logs car health, usage and driving behaviour. We've logged 5 million km of driving so far. Generally people are using it for expenses, car health monitoring, trip logging and improved economy. Measuring driving with a GPS signal on your phone works too but is not so accurate (and you have to remember to keep the app on of course each trip - but not when you're a passenger or on a bus etc)

        • +1

          Excellent point @syousef:

GOFAR works just fine with your phone in your pocket, or in your house or with a dead battery. The Connector continues to log your driving, and the economy coach, "Ray", continues to provide safe feedback in your peripheral vision, should you choose to use it.

We specifically designed it this way so you did not need to look at or interact with your phone. Phone use is one reason (along with speeding and fatigue) why accident rates have started creeping up again.

Basically, you do not need to have the GOFAR app up on your screen every trip. I mostly have my phone on a navigation app when I drive. GOFAR just works in the background.

What is this? At least put what the product is in the description.

    • -1

This company would make an excellent example in marketing class of what not to do!

      • +1

Fair point, but I looked at other deal posts on here and tried to keep it about the deal and put links to the pages with the information about the product.

  • +2

I actually don't understand what it is you are selling…

  • +1

    What is this spam?

    • Nope not spam.

      • How isn't it? What's the point of it

        • +1

What's the point of your post?

  • +1

This is targeted for people who use thier vehicles heavily, car allowance, leases or even novated lease. Maybe in the long run you would be able to save on cost. Unfortunately I don't need this app. I only use my car 20 mins a day. Mostly take the train these days to work.

    Hate Sydney traffic.

I may point this to other people who would be interested though

    • Thank you for share!

      • OP, can i buy this for someone in the US?

        • If you ship it locally yes. As you can then ship it on to them.

  • +1

Guys it plugs into car computer via OBD port.
Thats why it probably takes lots of into from Car computer about fuel and driving style..
    Mmm interesting.
Before you buy just check where is this OBD port in your car.
This has to be highlighted from an engineering point of view.

    Interesting start up.
Thinking actually to join as I drive for work a lot 30 000 kms annually.
Would be cool to divide this driving and see how much I spend for work and how much for personal use.

      Got an android phone?

If so log in and check out this page:

      https://www.google.com/maps/timeline?pb

      • +2

Don't even need an android phone, just a google app with tracking enabled :) (typically, maps)

        • Android OS keeps track of your phone even without maps. You can also locate your phone if it's lost (or at least last position the phone reported back to uncle Google).

On Honeymoon a decade back I used a Garmin hand held E-trex Legend GPS and was able to view tracks before GPS built into phones was common. Better yet it didn't phone home. If I lost the GPS I was stuffed but if not, I had my privacy and it was just as good. Upgraded to a colour version with a better chip a couple of years later. But the truth is GPS built into a mid to high end phone is far superior now for a casual user.

        • @syousef: >Android OS keeps track of your phone even without maps. You can also locate your phone if it's lost

All this is reported back to creepy Uncle Google so it can serve you unwanted advertising and influence your behavior to cause you to spend more without any knowledge of Google's role in the spending decisions.

        • @Diji1:

I'm not immune to advertising of course, but given the low quality of the targeted ads I see I'm not that concerned. That someone could hack google and work out my habits to rob me or do me or my family harm is the bigger worry.

        • @syousef: what's special about you? Why would they pick you? :P

        • @Lukian:

Most wouldn't specifically "pick me". It's like those phone scams telling you that your computer is infected with a virus. Hit as many people as you can.

Then there's the possibility of someone who decides to take an internet disagreement to the next level. Plenty of nutters out there.

        • @syousef: do you upset people on the internet often? :>

        • @Lukian:

Well I stand up to trolls sometimes. On one occasion I had idiots tracking down and defacing pictures of me and my wife (who had nothing to do with the rather petty disagreement).

  • +4

I think this sounds fantastic. Anything that helps me be aware of another, more efficient driving us a good idea. And having it jacked into my car, saving me having to start/stop a tracking program, ski the while measuring the car movement data (OBD)
I'm very impressed and about to press on the purchase button

Thanks OP for coming on here. And thanks for doing a wonderful deal, even better than early kickstarter deal!

And to the nay-sayers, no-one's forcing you to buy one!

    • I will ditto that sentiment. I think the device has a lot more features than a standard $10 ELM Bluetooth OBD readers and an app. For anyone who spends most of their time for work in a car and needs to track fuel and mileage down to the km, this is a great device… I just wish there was a version for my truck. It has a OBD plug for the ECU, but it isn't OBD II.

And thanks OP for coming back with a better deal. Good to see sellers making an effort to post bargains, even after all the negative Nancy's comments…

And really? (From comments feed above.) An indicator light is the same as sending an SMS while driving. What about flashing indicator lights? Or flashing the high beam light. Be careful putting the cruise control on, the "set" light is as bad as sending an SMS…

      • -1

Flashing indicator lights warn you about something important. They don't get your attention so you can tap the brakes a little more gently next time.

If you guys want to buy it and report back feel free. At the moment, I still see nothing I need or want here.

        • Yet you still choose to hang about on this thread and make pointless comments.

From what I have seen, this device is no more disruptive than an indicator light, and best of all, you don't even have to use it if it causes you that much of a distraction. Hell, a speedo is more distracting and takes more attention than this based in your ill informed conclusions.

You are making comments and relating this to being the same as sending an SMS while driving, yet OP has already shut you down by saying your phone does not even need to be on and that the "Ray" is optional.

Again, if you have nothing factual to say and there is nothing about this device that you need or want, your presence here is long past overdue and pointless.

        • @pegaxs:

You are talking such complete rubbish. An indicator light doesn't provide constant feedback that you're meant to use in your driving. An indicator light warns you that something is wrong with your car that actually needs attention. Once you see the light you don't need to keep looking back at it.

You don't get to decide who does and doesn't comment on Ozbargain. Thanks to feedback by myself and others the poster has modified the deal to more clearly state what his product does. It wasn't just me saying we had no idea when the deal was first posted. I personally still don't think the product offers me anything but others are now in a better position to choose if it suits them.

In fact I just learnt something from the modified post "* Live on iOS. Coming soon on Android.". I don't have an iOS device. If I was interested and I had bought this I'd have been disappointed until their app was updated.

Now if your only contribution is to tell others to shut up, I suggest you take your own advice. Or you can keep telling me to shut up and I can keep ignoring you. I really don't care.

        • @syousef: So a speedo does not provide constant feedback and doesn't need to be constantly monitored? You probably drive a BMW and don't use indicators, so I guess you have never noticed that they have ongoing visual feedback. This is no more distracting than a tacho. And best part is it's a light, so it's easy to see using peripheral vision, unlike a speedo that you have to take your eyes off the road to look down at. Same as sending an SMS message, apparently.

And OMG, thanks to your feedback??? this is the most detailed post ever. I have seen deals posted with one line and less than 10 words and I don't see you all up in that posters face about "more details". OP posted a link to the deal and a link to all the information you could need on the device and a general description. Even videos for the hard of understanding. OP's links were even clickable. No cut and paste skills required. Now, thanks to you, they have had to basically copy and paste their whole website here because of your inanely redundant comments that you don't leverage against any other poster on OzB. You are just being unreasonable and OP is still being awesome and going above and beyond to help out.

And I didn't ask anyone to shut up, I merely asked, if the deal has nothing for you, the if not for trolling, what other reason do you have to even come back here and make false and misleading comments?

        • -1

          @pegaxs:

Again a critical function - determining your speed - is not the same as constantly distracting you with feedback on your fuel efficiency and gamifying the experience. How much attention do you actually pay to your tacho? Unless you have a hearing issue I'd bet you pay more attention to the sound of your engine.

There is a reason you're suppose to post certain details in the title and others in the deal. You love to exaggerate though - "copy and paste of the whole website". Must be quite some website to fit in a few dot points. Did you miss the part about others complaining that they had no idea what was being sold? How many times do I have to repeat that it wasn't just me.

I'll tell you what champ. Instead of ranting and raving at me, if you think the OP is so awesome, why don't you order his product and provide some real feedback when you get it.

And you absolutely did tell me to shut up. There is no other way to take "your presence here is long past overdue and pointless."

If I'm making "false and misleading comments" stop wasting your time and report me. Your disagreement that this device is distracting doesn't constitute a "false and misleading" comment. I certainly didn't come here to troll. Even with the website it was extremely unclear what the OP was offering at first. I'm sorry you feel that describing the product without having to sit through links to advertising videos is too much to ask, but we'll have to disagree on that. Where I come from if you're trying to offer something for sale, you make it clear what you're offering without giving your potential customer the run around.

Now are you done contributing your magnificence to this post? Or am I going to get another round of repetition of you telling me to shut up (then denying it) and accusing me of everything from trolling to misleading people?

        • @syousef: while ever you are misleading people and posting diatribes in a poorly veiled attempt to justify your misinformation, I'll be around.

The fact remains that this device is no more a distraction from driving than a speedo or indicator. The best part is that it is "optional" and not "standard". By no stretch of the imagination is having a led notify you on the dash any where near as dangerous as sending a text message. And the fact that you continue to argue this as fact process that you are only here to mislead and your insistence to prolong any conversation with half page rubbish replies just goes to prove you are only here to troll.

Again, you seem to be easily distracted, so this device isn't for you. I don't know what your motive is to spread this garbage, but as I said before, unless you have some deep seated issue with the product, your comments to date are incorrect and misleading.

And again, if the product isn't for you, why bother making comments that are misleading if you're not here to just troll?

        • @pegaxs: When testing glanceability of our device it scores equal to looking at the speedo.

Not surprisingly, texting or changing the radio score as significantly more distracting.

We're using the same approach as Formula 1 shift lights because the brain absorbs light very fast (and quicker than deciphering numbers).

        • -1

          @GOFAR:

See now that's useful information, rather than the assertion that I suck and I'm an idiot for making a comparison. I might question you on the accuracy of that but it would spark an intelligent debate and it may well be that you have solid data backing you.

It would be worth including such info on your web site. If I thought of this criticisms others would have too.

  • Hi Samuel - thanks for buying. We'll just ship you Ray, the economy coach, AND the Connector (for the price of just the Connector). You don't need to do anything.

Good to see you took the advice people were giving you and modified the deal to explain concisely what the device does.

    • +1

Yes. Seemed to make sense! :-)

Wow interesting start up, it's good to see Aussies representing. Forget the haters.

I don't do a lot of driving for work anymore although I may have to again in 3+yrs time. But I'm intrigued about this 'sweet spot' concept for cars, is that basically keeping the revs lowish when shifting through gears? What sort of fuel savings are anticipated? The site says 17% Km's saved but under what conditions?
Does the concept work work for manual sports cars? And stop start traffic?

with the GPS tracked, what sort of privacy issues are there? Ie. Anyone who logs onto app can see where you've been?

Also if I do need it for tax tracking purposes later on, how soon will you be releasing an updated model?

    Good luck with it!

    • Thank you for the support!

It works for manual and automatic and the 17% is over a range of city and highway conditions.

And it works best for stop start traffic. Anyone who has your user/password can log into the app and see it yes. However it's just like any other user/pass protected information.

We've been releasing features and firmwares every month so far. So you could expect very frequent updates.

    • Critics aren't "haters". You have to prove your worth to sell a product.
