Wouldn't touch ASUS atm, specially refurbed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbGfc-JBxlY

Watched both videos from Tech Jesus and Jay

Tech Jesus: ASUS are being knobheads with the EXPO/X3D CPU voltage issue

Jay: ASUS mobo quality is suspect. They also sent me 2 promo mobos with damaged sockets. They are also hard negotiators on commercial sponsorships. Their GPU's are still great

Logical response to both videos: Don't buy ASUS motherboards

        • There's more to it than just broken motherboards though.

https://twitter.com/GamersNexus/status/1656650784497455105 They wanted to pay off GN behind closed doors.

And in the Jay video they didn't honor warranty etc. So yeah, would not buy a refurbed asus product.

          • @SuBw00FeR: There was nothing about being paid off in the tweet. GN has flown out to multiple other companies too that had their own issues i.e. newegg that had no exchange of money.

            • @JerraJones: Newegg let them record everything they said and did.

ASUS didn't reply after they said they would do this.

      • +1

ASUS has always had bad support but this has taken it to a new level.

      • All companies are sh!t, it's just what colour and consistency for that particular month. So, this month it's ASUS and it's watery and yellow.
It is good that they (companies) get called out for it, they just aren't caught often enough.

    • had one those and while it was ok it didnt compare to the Kraken (Nuc) or Dell G15's
Lower power GPU and the cooling was nowhere near as good

    • -7

People need to stop posting ASUS deals already. Read the room…and the tech news.

      • +8

You're not going to find many for-profit corporations that are bastions of good ethics and consumer-friendly practices. Bringing up Asus' recent issues is fine, but saying you should buy a different brand instead under the guise of "supporting a better company" seems like a bit of a fool's errand unless a particular company has done something truly atrocious.

        • -4

They have done something truly atrocious. They’ve taken millions of customer dollars for expensive motherboards and now refuse to support them.

Such a doormat mentality of taking whatever crap a company throws at you isn’t in anyone’s interest, except the company itself.

It doesn’t matter how many offenders you rhyme off, do you let one go unchecked simply because it’s happened before? Only by holding them properly to account might they act.

Tell all those whose expensive equipment has died, not to mention people whose pc’s are yet to fail, that it’s a fool’s errand. I stand firm that people should boycott this brand until it loses its arrogance.

          • @Lps: I did not say:

            • What they did is right (it's not)

            • What they did is okay (it's not)

If we boycott every brand that does something stupid in the hardware space, we'll be stuck with like 1% of the marketplace. Boycotting a company that does crappy things for another company THAT ALSO DOES CRAPPY THINGS doesn't make things better, it just redistributes the money. That seems to be what you're advocating for by not showing a viable alternative that does not ALSO do comparable crap.

We know (for example see the HP thing) that a temporary boycott DOES NOT GUARANTEE LONG TERM CHANGE. The company will just pull the same or similar bullshit once you've forgotten about the first time.

As an aside I don't personally agree with your assessment of "truly atrocious". I'm talking stuff like broad, forced child labor across a large section of the supply chain. There's no way something like this is at that level.

can you get it for 1200?

        • it actually comes with 4070 already, maybe factor the price into it once you add your own gfx card…

      • I'd go for the intel as its got the i7 vs the i5.

I got that one on my desk. Its been very good. But got it during Covid so paid the premium at the time.

I've seen them go for even lower. High $800

            • @Skullytor: Ahh nice. CPLonline had it for $979, so posted my comment for $896.22 before someone jumped the gun :)
I also built a Ryzen 3950x based system during covid times, and man o man I paid the premium for all parts.

              • @Covid19: At least it was tax deductible for me at the time. A kind of once in a lifetime way I could spend big on a PC and get something back.
I made sure work wouldnt buy me a laptop :-D

        • yes, the kraken one is much better value as it comes with the gfx card already…

          • @meong: Depends on what you want out of the CPU.
The 11th Gen intil would be about the same if you get a decent deal on a GPU, so it just depends on what case and brand etc you prefer.

    • Is it better than a mesh system? I am using Tp-link Deco for home NBN and trying to upgrade. Thanks

      • +3

Can't compare since it doesn't have wifi.

I have a udm pro. It's ok. The UI is easy to use and it does what it has to do. If I was doing it all again I'd probably go the OPNsense (or similar) route(r).

      • +2

You need to buy access points, which you can then run either as mesh or separates.

      • +3

This is more towards professional/commercial grade.
Unless you’re a heavy user, deco mesh should do the job.

        • Agree! Deco mesh should be okay

Unless you are FOMO like I did :)

    • +1

I mean if we're only talking 1gbps buy something second hand. tons of places are upgrading the 2.5gbps.

    • +1

Do you realise you don’t actually need this to run the unify access points? They will work off any router + POE switch connected using the app. Unless you are a business running many clients/configs its a total waste of money imo

      • Yep, you certainly can run the APs without this. I'm currently running an AP, POE Switch, USG, Network Controller in Docker. Purchased this to consolidate. I also run a few separate networks at home (General, 2.5Ghz IoT, Work, LAB) and like the ease of having it all in one interface.

        • Flipping that - do you need to run Ubiquiti APs using this? Or can you use other branded devices as APs?

          • +1

@aragornelessar: It's just a router, it doesn't care what you plug into it - you can connect anything you like.

But obviously the nice Unifi management console isn't going to be able to manage anything except the Unifi gear. You'll have to self-manage anything else you connect that isn't Unifi.

Don't buy this if you don't understand these concepts already 😁

            • @Nom: I was asking because I never see anyone talk about using non-Ubiquiti APs in their setups. That could simply be because it's locked and won't let you, it's not worth the extra hassle, or people are so fanboi about it they will not even consider other options.

I didn't see your last sentence as neccessary, but thanks for your input.

              • @aragornelessar:

I was asking because I never see anyone talk about using non-Ubiquiti APs in their setups.

The whole point of the Unifi stack is so that you can manage everything in a single pane.
There's no reason to use APs from another vendor - that just makes everything twice as difficult for you.

That could simply be because it's locked and won't let you, it's not worth the extra hassle, or people are so fanboi about it they will not even consider other options.

None of the above. Again it's just a router. You can plug in whatever Ethernet gear you like - no router has any such thing as "same vendor access point locks", that doesn't make any sense.
                It's all about the management.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/333683478577

Used laptop, and if ebay plus member you score $$$$ of to bring it to $631. I thought the specs were ok… I bought 1. I will use it for work, I get GST back, and claim the rest.

My rational, hopefully a better laptop than a new entry level for same price .

    • I recently had one of these as a work laptop and it was really not much good. Especially with all the corporate bloatware, it’s fan was on most of the day and it was noisy. I used to watch the CPU utilisation and even at 10-15% the fan was on. I wouldn’t buy at all.

      • Sounds like it's your corporate bloatware's fault rather than the laptop's fault?

        • seems unlikely that the corporate bloatware causes the fan to come on at 10 per cent CPU usage

        • You’re not wrong really, the antivirus/malware was horrendous. It seemed to scan a file at each and every access. But the CPU seemed to be not a good option for a laptop, or the cooling design was poor, because like I said, at low loads the fan was going. I was told by someone that this was common with this series.

      • uninstall hardware and clean the fan. It is sold as used so there is a solid chance it hasn't been cleaned in a while, especially if corporate.

Gigabyte RTX 4070 12GB GAMING OC 896.22 delivered - > very good in components

        • I'd rate the MSI higher just because it's so much quieter.

    • People worried about the MSI Vram issue when it has a 3yr warranty ?

      • And the issue is with the 3x, not this one

      • For people that need their system to be reliable its fair enough, 3 year warranty is great but that doesn't negate the RMA wait time, which can be notoriously slow.
