Why would you want a touch screen on an semi/automatic coffee machine?
You need tactile buttons so your muscle memory can press the buttons to deliver the caffeine whilst your brain is still sleeping.

As long as the point to touch for double expresso is on the same spot every time, all is good.

    • The point of the touch is that your preset settings are actioned with one touch. Only matters if you make different types of drinks like a cap or flat white, the steam wand settings are changed.

Sleepy brain gotta concentrate when frothing milk :( !

I never used one of these so I can't tell how good the frothing is.

  • One of the best features of this machine is the automatic milk frothing and heating system. You can control temp and froth level which uses senses in the wand arm and base of unit.

    • This sounds like it was copied from a brochure or one of those ads show-casing a particular product.

nah just my explanation, didn't know how else to put it.

        • How's the consistency though? I've never seen an automatic machine get milk frothing right. The wand typically goes very deep and creates a tonne of large bubbles instead of micro foam.

I'm a manual espresso machine man through and through because I love the control, but I've always wondered if they've ever managed to improve automatic machines (especially when it comes to milk frothing).

        • @Trickey:

Dad has an oracle touch and I have a stock standard bes840. The auto wand on the oracle touch is pretty good, but there is the option to set it to manual mode and do it yourself, which is what I end up doing.

I do like the thicker wand on the oracle touch though… feels like it's easier to take care of.. and the auto self cleaning after use, even in manual mode.

        • @Trickey: i find the milk to get decent micro foam on the auto setting..well as good as to be expected.

It is far superior to an aftermarket milk frothing unit..it is a significant time saving as you can just place the milk jug down, press auto froth and clean the coffee puck out of the portafilter and come back when it's finished, which it then auto cleans when the arm is placed back into the nuetral position.

@jimmynewts: Maybe the rep that was showing me the unit had no idea. The coffee she made with the Oracle was awful. I doubt Breville is investing much in their staff e.g. training them how to properly use their machines.

        • @Trickey:

That was definitely the case the day I went in to Harvey Norman and they were demoing the bes 900

  • Was looking at this machine a few months back and decided against it as it’s still messy. You need to tamp yourself and while I was getting a demo by a breville rep, Coffee was going everywhere

Don’t know about anyone else but I don’t want crap all over my kitchen and then having to clean it up after spending good money on a machine

Save for the Orical or Orical Touch people or get a Creatista

    • I personally use the BES920 which is similar to this one. If you're not careful on grinding and tamping, you'll get mess everywhere. I'm not sure if auto tamping is worth an extra 1k for me.

      • No tamping with capsule, bag, and instant coffee :-P

        • +2

Yeah, but that means you have to drink capsule, bagged, or instant coffee.

        • [@Lorindor](/comment/5643624/ire redir): surviving, not "drinking"

    • i don't find it overly messy. You just need to tap the portafilter as it fills with ground coffee so it doesnt overfill. then its as easy as tamp, brew and flick the puck into the bin with a quick rinse. Each to their own i guess.

    • if Michael Angelo was worried about paint crap on the floor and cleaning it up we wouldn't have his art on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel …… focus on the art and not the mess …. the art of the Barista …….. always wondered what tea ladies morphed into.

I put up with the mess as I have a separate coffee grinder and purge the steam wand so less water in the milk.

  • Have an Italian espresso machine(Lelit) and it's completely manual and does a fantastic job with a built in quality burr grinder adjustable through 10 degrees and texturing the milk is a full on barista moment .

But…I've been working at a house with two super busy people and they have this model and they have a brand new oracle and they said I can have the old model. The milk texturing on auto is as good as I can get on the Lelit and the the built in grinder does a good job(I think mine is better but…)as well but the bloody beauty of these things is they're so easy to use and you just press buttons. The milk texturing is fine for your slightly informed coffee lover, just watch it don't just let it to its own thing while you look away.

    +1 for them I think.
