Haldiram’s Khatta Meetha 150gm $1.50 (RRP $2.20) @ Select Coles Stores

160

This is one of my favourite Indian snacks available here. It has a unique taste which is a nice combination of sour, sweet, spicy and tangy flavours. I think that its name is apt.. ‘khatta’ means tangy and ‘meetha’ means sweet in Hindi and some other Indian languages. Not many snacks have this flavour. Also, pretty crispy and mild (not spicy). Prfect with beers.

Only some Coles stores have international food aisle - most in big cities should have it though. Check it out. You won’t regret.

PS: Many Indians like this (and some other snacks from this brand) more than bhuja. I think these are tastier but slightly heavier in oil too. If you like bhuja, then this deserves a try for sure. It is not apple to apple comparison though as ingredients are quite different.

  • Just to let you know you can get 10 for $10 in most of indian stores. At least in Adelaide.

Not this size. They are smaller.

    • Not in Melbourne - 4 for $6.50 the last time I checked at an Indian grocery.

Reminds me… did anyone get stuck into the 'Passage to India' sauces for $2.14 last week? Best curry sauce out of a packet I've ever had. Grabbed 62 of them!

    • +1

Holy balls, that's alot of sauce. I forgot to go get em.

      • It's a shame, I did the maths and for myself it's about $3 a serve vs $16 down the street

The quality is that good I'd pay $8-10 in a shop for my curry

:) best butter chicken I've had was those spice nirvana packs, I've gotta make my butter chickens one these days :P last night was T-bone lol

  • What is this like compared with Bhuja?

    • Updated the post as I saw this question coming.

    • Certainly more dimensions of flavour - sweet, salty …

    • +2

I’ve tried both brands. Bhuja is Australian made so the taste is not as strong as this Indian brand. Anything made in their original countries usually has more kick in the flavours.
In here, less sugar, less salt, less spices, but maybe healthier. Maybe:)

      • next to vinnies op shop?

what other places can you recommend in North Brisbane?

        • If you buying lot of stuff its worth driving to "Mirch Masala"(also has awesome snack food resturent upstairs) in Gabba or "Swadesh" in Toowong both sell fresh stock with reasonable prices and you can get more varieties

Zillmere has a store called "Apna Bazar" next to the station which i find reasonable

Haldirams bhel puri is also $1.50 for 150g.

    • This one I have not tried before, but based on the googled description (sweet and sour), it sounds like a winner too. Will definitely pick one up to try.

Bhel Puri is an Indian snack which is a mixture of different items and has a couple of types of chutneys added on it. One being a sweet/tangy chutney made from tamarind and dates and other spicy chutney made from chilli, mint, coriander etc.

Khatta Meetha is a stand-alone snack which you can simply have out of box. You can eat bhel puri straight from packet too but that’s not how is normally eaten. You can google “bhel puri” to see some images of that dish. It is a popular Indian roadside snack.

  • This is also my favourite among the ones I have tried in the Haldiram range. Think I can get the 350g pack at a slightly cheaper price (by weight) at the Indian grocery, but for the 150g pack, this is definitely a great price.

The Navrattan mix, and All-In-One in this range are pretty good too .. but they are not stocked by Coles.

  • 3 pc 200gm for $5 in udaya Indian stores

    • How many Udaya stores do they have across Australia?

  • Saw this in Auburn Costco but in 800gm packs. Not sure of price though.

  • Moorabbin Costco selling 1kg for $5.98. I just bought it for myself :)

    • Didn't know they had 1kg packs too. I thought the biggest was 800gm or so.

      • I didn't know that neither but definitely 1kg
