  • are people just applying for credit cards just to get these initial points to their qantas account then cancelling the card later?

    • I will probably keep the BMW card as its a gold card with FF rewards and $0 annual fee. No point keeping the Qantas card after the initial bonus from what I can tell.

      • But doesnt your credit rating drop like crazy if you apply for too many credit cards?

        • There is no official rating. But you may have problems obtaining further credit if you have too many applications on your credit file.

        • Yeah I thought it was something like that.

        • Seems silly… so probably true ;-) It would make more sense if they based it on whether you can pay off your credit in time (regardless of of many cards you have). If you have more cards and still pay your cc bills in time they should give you a better rating as it proves you are more capable/reliable!

I went to check my credit record (via D&B) and I didn't have one (even though I have credit cards)! Doesn't give you much faith in the "system".

        • +1

I have a stack of cards, all $0 annual fee, most of them sit in the cupboard and get used for specific purposes, or for emergencies, plus a everyday spender & one I use for OS transactions.

You credit file only shows your application for credit, and the dates those applications were made, it doesn't show if it was successful or not. Assumptions are made based on the frequency and grouping of applications.

Your first credit card is probably the hardest to qualify for if you don't already have a credit rating, but after that, providing you pay them on time, have a steady job, and don't move around too much credit companies end up throwing credit cards at you.

When applying for a home loan most banks will take into account that you pay your credit cards off each month in full, so it shouldn't matter too much.

      • @daydream The system sort of works that way. If you can pay your bills on time, then you don't get any black marks against your credit file. However, if you don't pay your bills on time, then you risk having your credit file marked.

Also, I obtained my credit file a while back from Veda Advantage. Check them out. The system isn't very efficient for a free credit file, but at least it's free. It's also not 100% accurate. Not sure how credit applications are reported to these agencies.

  • Is that $0 Annual Fee for the life of the card or only in the first year?

    • i m wondering this myself

      • -1

Seems like for the life of the card.

I'm doing the application now and when I get to choosing the rewards program, for Qantas Direct it says -
"If you choose Qantas Direct you have the ability to earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points. You can apply for Qantas Frequent Flyer membership now or call the Qantas Frequent Flyer Service Centre on 13 11 31. A membership fee applies and membership is subject to the terms and conditions of the program."

Does that mean if you choose the Qantas rewards program there's an extra fee on top?

        • +1

It just means the joining fee (currently $82.50 if you apply directly from Qantas) to join QFF.
You can join QFF for free from Woolworths Everyday Rewards.

  • +4

I've had a BMW card for years and never had any fees… 10000 reward points is worth about $60 in terms of cashback.

  • Thanks for this, I'll ditch my 3 year old Qantas Amex now!

  • +1

According to the Membership rewards website, the best bangs for bucks:

115,000 points will get you a $1000 gift card to Woolworths, thus making 10,000 points worth $87
62,500 points will get you a $500 gift card to Coles/Woolworths, thus making 10,000 points worth $80.
130,000 points will get you $1000 credit, thus making 10,000, $77.

I think the key is to bank as many point as you can to redeem the highest value of gift card/cash back.

    • If you try flights, then the points are worth much more. 60 000 points + $2xx return Syd-HKG.

    • 100,000 points will get you a $1000 travel agency gift card…seems to be the best deal I can find…

EDIT: 10,000 for $100, so no difference in saving up points for travel agents :)

  • So what's the benefit of a gold card over a normal Amex Qantas card? I can't see anything on the website…

  • Does this card offer free warranty?

  • err, applied the qantas card yesterday, but they probably will do the same job for me.

  • anyone know if i could transfer the point balance of my american express blue sky card to this credit card?

    • i dont think u can as blue sky program is different to MR.btw you can simply cash in your points now for supermarket gift cards which is better value. the blue sky amex card is a good card too and comes with free insurance

      • I think we are using the same members reward points to redemm any offers on the website, for blue sky card the points are refer to as "Membership Rewards Points".

maybe transfer current points to new card is possible but with a fee.

  • Since its a Gold Card…does that mean you also get free Travel Insurance??

    • -4

      Read the T&C's

      • +1

I couldn't find any T&C's for this promotion other than the standard AMEX T&C's.

        • double post

        • The association gold cards use the same T&Cs for (barring initial points bonuses etc).

    • NO!!!! No free Travel Insurance….
Got a call from them this morning to confirm my details…
They said you can get Travel Insurance for a fee!!!! Didn't bother to ask how much!!

    • +2

If you want a gold / platinum card with no annual fee, and travel + purchase insurance have a look at the BankWest Zero cards

      • But no rewards.. :-(

        • +1

Can't have everything for free ;) - which is why it's handy to have multiple cards.

  • i'm using the blue sky card as well, thinking of changing to this gold card, but probably going for the "Ascent1" reward instead of qantas ff.

    • Krisflyer offers much better international redemeptions, so its better to go for ascent :)

  • Retailers hate Amex.
Funny seeing the faces when told Amex isn't accepted and it seems to be their ONLY card. Geez.

  • Fairly certain the card doesn't give u extras like warranty or travel insurance.

    • My gold amex which is association affiliated does give travel insurance, but i dont think warranty. However I am not sure about this card. Can't see it in T&Cs, but still looking.

  • My experience with an AMEX card was that after a year of $0 annual fee, they charged me $80 for the next year. They told me that the T&C's had changed within the year. A very dodgy practice, I complained until they revoked the charge and cancelled the card.

    • u were blacklisted for complaining ?

      • Sorry, I meant that I had the card cancelled.

    • Did you asked them what fee you were charged for? An C/C annual fee or the ascent membership fee (used to be $80 a year)?

      • +1

CC annual fee. They were nice about cancelling the card, but I wasn't happy about the ol' switcharoo.

  • Just wondering which program is better, the ascent or the QFF? I did a bit of research and I'm confused whether you can transfer points from the ascent program into the QFF program? Is there an Ascent and an Ascent Premium program?

    • No you can't shift between the two. That is a result of qff direct earn changes.

      • You can swap programs at anytime, but you must use up or forfeit any points you have accrued on your current program before swapping.

  • How strict are they with the income requirement?

    • $25k

  • i just applied for one and it said it got approved.

i also called them up and they said

there is no contract and can be cancelled anytime and no annual fee or charges

    • Now I start to wonder does Amex seperate the annual card fee and the membership fee, ie. for the card itself you get a fee-free card which used to be some dollars a year, however for using the membership rewards program like Ascent or QFF, they just waived the joining fee like $80 in the first year, and staying with this program will cost you $80 each year afterward.

I got an Amex gold ascent which comes with no fee, 1 point per $2. If I want to gain 1 point per dollar I need to spend $80 a year, which is the membership fee rather than the annual car fee, so technically my card is still fee-free. Not sure about the QFF, seems just a one-off joining fee.

      • +1

        - No annual Card fee – save $70 p.a.

        - No annual Supplementary Card fee – save $20 p.a. per Card

        - Complimentary enrolment in either Membership Rewards Ascent1 or Qantas Direct2 – save $80 p.a.

All the waivers have p.a. after them, I'm assuming the $80 fee for Ascent or QFF will be waived every year?

  • +3

Obvious question that appears not to have been asked… do you need to own a BMW?

    • I just applied for one, approved and I don't own a BMW :)

    • if you had a BMW, and you ticked the "Send me Junk Mail" box, then a promotional form letter with an application form get sent to your mailing address where your monthly BMW magazine is sent.

  • Got to love how American Express have 17(!) variations of their cards to choose from/compare on their site (incl David Jones) but don't have this one.

  • awesome!I got two CPA Amex cards, can I still apply for this one?

  • +1

which program is better in value, the ascent or the QFF?

  • +1

Just make sure u guys can make the repayments lol
    We don't need another recession

  • OT slighly Does anyone know if the woolies card has an annual fee? I cant seem to find it on their site. If not might be a good plan to

get woolies card, get free QFF program and 16,000 QFF points
then get this card and get another 10,000 points

    or am i missing something?

    • +1

nvm $89 fee for woolies card

  • Does anyone know whether the supplementary card give $50 gift card as the other offer ?

    • Seem to me the Normal Qantas AE Offer is BETTER than this BMW's offer. The Qantas card get $50 for supp card, but the BMW one without any extra benefit, except it is GOLD in colour!

      • +1

Qantas 44 days interest fee, BMW 55

Qantas spend $300 in 3 months + qantas product for 10,000 pts, BMW $500 in 2 months

  • +3

Personally - I'd prefer to whip out a BMW card vs Qantas card.

    • +1

ditto :) and also coz its gold

      • I'd rather it with no branding. Seems a bit wanky with the bmw branding :(

Im sure supermarket attendants dont care about the colour of the card…

    • lol yeh i thought so too… but no one has ever really said anything about it… I seem to be the only one that thinks its cool!

Then the other day, I used my metallic red NAB Visa card and some chick was like 'ooooh that's a nice card'…

      • I used to get a similar reaction using the old Virgin credit card, cause it had a nice rounded corner.

I guess the idea is that you 'feel good' using it, and prefer it over other cards :)

  • Anyone know if you can get cash advance on amex cards? What amount?

    • You can usually cash advance on all credit cards, however the interest rate will be huge ~20% + Fee

  • Mine is on its way. Will start using it when I pay rent/bills and flights. Should be able to get a few points that way.

    • Did they approve you on the spot?

      • Yep. Spoke to American Express yesterday and they said it was already coming in the mail.

        • what bills can u pay with amex ?

  • Just found out from AMEX that this BMW Gold Card's $70 annual fee is only waived for first year. However, the BMW site says no annual card fees and $70 waived p.a. which implies more than 1 year?

The Qantas Discovery annual fee is waived full stop.

    • This might be true re mooribbit's experience above.

    • WOW if that's true that would be dodgy as. BMW site doesn't indicate that its waived for first year only.

    • +1

Just called AMEX and confirmed that there are no annual fees EVER, also no rewards program fees. So basically no fees EVER

      • I can confirm this, as I also rang & asked

        • -1

No annual fee ever it's quite obvious and laid out i nsimple terms

Ive applied got my card and confirm it says Subsequent years are charged at $NIL

  • I've had my BMW card for years and never paid a fee… same for my LIV and CPA ones.

  • Was contacted today to confirm some details, and advised my card is on it's way.

When I asked about the bonus points I was told that if I spend $500 over the next two months I get 20,000 bonus points..

I then asked if she mistakenly meant 10,000 and she said 20,000 on the current promotion and they will land 6-8 weeks after the 2nd month. If so that is sweet.

  • +1

Got my card today, yay :)

  • I think this card is much better for those who want to transfer points to Virgins Velocity program, which is a great deal better than Qantas FF. Im ditching my charge card after 22 years with this deal with no annual fees, no membership rewards fees and bonus points. It is worth serious consideration for any AMEX charge or credit cardholder!

    • I think so too. But just got approved with the qantas card today, and applied ascent card a month ago, so now I have 2 cards, both with supplementary cards (for the $50 gift card). I reckon it's not a good time to apply for another card and cancel the ascent card, right?

Also, is this card able to join AMEX issued cards only promotions such as the hopscotch bonus point promotion?

I probably will apply for this by the end of March.

  • I got my BMW card today, ha ha ha~~~~

  • +2

    I reckon it's fee free for life…
The paper which the card is attached said this:

    Annual Card fee
    For the first year $NIL
    For each subsequent year $NIL

    Reward program fee
If you have selected Membership Rewards Ascent $NIL
If you have selected Qantas Direct $NIL

  • Membership Rewards Ascent vs Qantas Direct?
    which 1 better?

    • I think Ascent is more flexible than QFF

  • Is there a PIN for this card or do AMEX cards have none?

    • There must be cause that is how u would normally cash advance, I received my card last week but no sign of the PIN yet…

      • amex dont offer cash advances on new applications anymore and didnt sign up to the pin system but i think they will be forced to join it in a couple of years when merchants start only accepting pin like some overseas country's do now. btw does anyone know if you get a $50 gift card if you apply for a supplermentary card like the amex discovery card deal?

        • I got a sup card, no $50 gift :(

        • Not with this one, I didn't read anything about that.

  • I checked my online AMEX account on Christmas Eve and was shocked to find a $80 charge with the description MEMBERSHIP REWARDS FEE.

I contacted them through the online secure message center, and they said it could take 6 to 8 weeks to resolve.

I asked that the charge be will NOT be included in the amount payable if I receive a statement before it is resolved.

They got back to me yesterday advising they have credited the $80.

If you haven't already it might pay to sign up to AMEX online, check if they have charged you and get it credited before you next statement.
