    Just got the text myself.

  • +7

it's good, although in my case I'm still ~$30 ahead a year with Origin billsaver as supply charges is also discounted (QLD).

    • +3

Switch across anyway (I did). The only reason Origin discounted was to combat the new entrant in the market. If consumers are passive about supporting competition we'll be right back to exploding power bills. $7 a quarter is a triviality when it comes with significantly cheaper prices across the network.

    • +10

I too switched even though I would have been a little better off staying with Origin. Especially once they also matched Alinta's FIT. But if they can suddenly offer such discounts now, then they could have all along. Better to give a new player a go I think.

    • +2

Once your bills get up around $330/quarter though Alintas usage savings starts outstripping Origins supply savings, you would only get that kind of savings if you didn't actually use any electricity.

    • Always a good reminder to give origin a call and shake them up a bit, I am in the same boat as I have gas so a small electricity bill but I called origin and they found me another 2% off my total bill on top of my existing bill.

  • +5

Agree with isamurai. The origin 21% deal is still going and works out cheaper as origin have lower usage charge and the discount is off total bill.

    • +6

Happy to pay a few bucks more with Alinta than go back to Origin who were screwing everybody over for years before the competition came along.

      • +3

All the retailers are as bad as one another for ripping people off. Don’t trust them. Pay the cheapest you can and keep changing providers regularly.

        • +5

As I replied to iSamurai, Once your bills get up around $330/quarter though Alintas usage savings starts outstripping Origins supply savings.

    • Don't forget that Origin charge you a fee pay via credit card, Alinta do not. Plus the terms and conditions of origin that states "if you don’t hear from us, your energy supply will continue under our Agreement without Energy Plan benefits.” Which means essentially if you don't make note to change providers in exactly 12 months time or check your plan, you will be moved over without notice to their regular plans; potentially with no discount.

      • Is it from your personal experience that you say Alinta doesn't charge a credit card payment fee? I ask because I recently switched to them but haven't received my first bill yet. I did find information on their website that a 0.7% credit card surcharge applies. Would be great if that really wasn't the case.

        • Do you remember the website that states this? I did a Google search and can only find any mention of a credit card surcharge on the WA site. Nothing for QLD or SA etc. so thinking the 0.7% might be applicable to WA accounts only?

        • @kelea: You are quite right. I hadn't noticed that I was on their WA site. Like you, I couldn't find any mention of a surchage on the QLD site.

        • Alinta do not charge a CC fee, Origin do at .35% I believe it is. If your usage is lower, origin is still better if you're a family Alinta is going to be the better deal.

    • +5

Not a bad deal but Alinta is better suited to anyone using an average or larger amount of electricity.
We typically use 1500kwh per 90 days (which I think is about average but the three months of summer, sees that spike up to 2000kwh (air con, pool pump longer).

      Single metre
Discounted KW/H with Origin (GST inclusive) = $0.2130
Discounted KW/H with Alinta (GST inclusive) = $0.2059

We are a family of three and use about 1500kwh per 90 days.

      Alinta: $308.85
      Origin: $319.50

Discounted Origin (GST inclusive) supply charge: $0.9923
Alinta supply charge (GST inclusive): $1.0890

      Origin: $89.31
      Alinta: $98.01

      Normal bill for us:
      $408.81 Origin (1500kwh)
      $406.86 Alinta (1500kwh)

      Summer bill for us:
      $509.81 (2000kwh) Alinta
      $515.31 (2000kwh) Origin

      So it's really a much of a muchness…

BUT for those with Solar, Alinta under this plan pays a 11c/kwh FIT. Origin under this plan only pay 7c/KWH……………

I've updated the Australian Electricity Prices Spreadsheet with this new rate: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AzwNrB-WxIYhCXjTUww3…

The discount has changed from 25% to 28%, but at the same time they've increased their daily supply charge from $1.089 to $1.15973. If you use more than about $210 of electricity per quarter (not counting supply charges) then this will work out a better deal for you than their previous rates, otherwise the increase in daily supply charge will outweigh the discount.

    • +3

Omg I'm so sick of companies doing this. It's similar to the ebay price jacking. Wtf? Do they think we are so stupid we see the dancing signs with NOW 28% OFF!! and we will not notice them raising the other prices in the background?

      • +1

Most people won't notice the increase in supply charge, so as a business decision it makes sense.

        • +2

As per the other comments down further, It appears it hasn't gone up and adam has grabbed the wrong rate.

      • I'm with you on this. Supply charge should be fixed no matter which provider you use. Even if it's Energex price + 20% it would make calculating the cheapest tariff far easier. Otherwise it probably works out cheaper to be one with supplier for winter that charges a lower supply rate and then to switch to another for summer that charges a higher supply rate but a lower unit charge.

    • Thanks, I was just about to ask if any rates have increased. KW charges, have they changed as well?

    • Sneaky. Didn't realise that, but also haven't looked into it too closely.

Where have they said supply charges are increasing? Can't find it anywhere.

    • +2

Where are u seeing the supply increase? The link from the OP still shows $1.089

    • +3

Daily supply is still $1.089 and has not gone up. I think you maybe looking at the daily supply rate which includes the solar metering. That hasn't changed though, has been like that since I signed up last year and is consistent across two bills I've had.

      • +2

You're spot on Sonnyw77, I have made a mistake in that I was looking at the daily rate with the solar metering. The daily rate has not changed at all. I've fixed the spreadsheet where required. Thanks for the people that picked up on my error.

        • Not to worry man. If you're feeling down on yourself just bask in the warm fuzzy glow of mass appreciation directed your way from the marketing departments of competing energy companies :P

  • +3

thanks saves me watching Channel 9 news after seeing promo about the deal

    • -1

I take it you'll go to maccas instead?

  • +4

Good news. Just left Click Energy after getting screwed over with a hefty price increase 1 month into the quarter. Still annoyed about being stuck with them for 2 months under the new rate. Such a dodgy move.

    • +1

Click Energy were charging me over 80% above market for off peak power after “discount”, and a considerable increase over other charges too. They need to be watched carefully.

      • +1

agreed, i think they started this after taken over by amaysim or something. Switched over to Origin and will not be looking back. Click tried to get me to stay with an email with a bigger discount but their tariff and daily supply charges were just too high and just not competitive. They still owe me $50 in credit which I will have to chase them about.

Origins offpeak/tariff rates are quite good and cheapest supply charge so we switched to them. Alinta would cost us more as their daily supply is much higher.

Family of 4, 2 adults 2 kids around 600-800kwh / quarter. We use very little electricity as our hot water is Solar heated and cooking is using gas.

have heard Origin used to suck, but at least they are making an effort to match competitors rates now.

    • In need to check the email they have sent a couple of days ago on changes to rates, might need to switch as well.

  • +1

Has anyone got any honest feedback regarding Alinta as their provider?

I've been wanting to make the switch for a while but productreview doesn't inspire me with confidence.
    https://www.productreview.com.au/p/alinta.html

    • Wow, those reviews are not good at all.

    • If it helps, I changed from Energy Australia 3 or 4 months ago (whenever Alinta came on the market…), and haven’t had any issues. Billing worked fine in the transition, was charged correctly by both parties etc. I went to pay my first 3 month bill and the biller bpay code didn’t work, but they fixed that and I believe it’s all fine now.

Like a lot of utilities, things don’t suck until they do, and then you have issues but that applies to them all. I’ve been with Origin, AGL, etc. and they all blow.

    • I tend to take productreview with a grain of salt, Canstarblue has them with a 5-star customer satisfaction rating for whatever that's worth.

      • +3

Yep, Alinta with a 2.1 star rating isn't good at all but most people that leave reviews are salty after a shitty experience and happy customers are much less likely to leave a review. Comparatively, Origin's is 1.3.

    • We have solar, and we were originally with AGL and got our smartmeter with them.

AGL could display time of day usage, including solar feed-in! It was incredibly handy.

We then switched to energy australia. Energy australia iirc was only able to tell us electricity usage per day, NO SOLAR FEED-IN, and no time of day usage.

We then switched to Alinta… And nothing… They could not figure out at all how to tell us our electricity usage as it went on. Nothing solar, nothing regular, just a bill at the end.

We're now in the process of moving back to AGL, because we just want to have that basic information from our smart meter! It's a shame all the systems aren't standardised.

      • Powershop seem to have really good info on usage and solar generated (free of course) if you have a smart meter. Their method of paying is different but they show kW cost if you click through their "packs". Pm me if you want a referral code.. $75 each

  • Alinta accepts amex as a payment method. Sold!

  • 28% discount……….is this just in time for the Lunar New Year? C:

    • +2

No, it's just in time for their rate rise in June. (Your first bill if you swap - quarterly billing)

  • Nice spreadsheet.

Needs updating for new rates though.

friend was on Dodo, they snuck in a huge increase… get the fk out now. Now he has to wait 3mths till next reading to change over.

People need to pay attention to pricing change notice

    • +2

Don't have to wait 3mths if you're happy to pay a Meter reading fee. QLD around $11. Vic $14-50. NSW $20-93.

  • If only your neighbouring country ( W.A) were included in offers :( we always miss out haha

    • The retailers are coming! AGL in July apparently.

  • +1

    Hi Guys,

I'm currently on click energy's 27% discount/big switch up plan.

Our quarterly bill is around 400-600,no solar.

Should I go with this Altina deal or Origins 21%?

    Appreciate any advice.

    Cheers

    • +3

Alinta would work out slightly cheaper for you most likely

      • Thanks mate.

  • +1

Call Origin and mention Alinta should be able to get 23%, If not just go with Alinta.

  • +1

    Why only QLD?

    • +2

Each state has a different discount (VIC seems to be excluded).

W.A: Get 25% off the gas usage
S.A: 25% off your electricity usage
N.S.W: 27% off your electricity usage

  • So, not the most overcharged state? (SA)

This makes me a bit sad :/

  • those concerned about their credit checks, must know that Alinta Energy does credit checks for giving you a connection.

  • +2

I switched over from Origin last year. Origin rang me offering all these great deals that were cheaper but I refused simply just to promote more competition in the industry. Needs a shake up.

  • Does anyone know what the hell's going on with the ridiculous energy billing systems here? We were with AGL here in Brisbane for ages.. Got tired of huge bills, so two months ago did this "Big Switch" thing to Click Energy. So only two months in with Click, and now I get an email informing us of a price hike, and a very confusing disclosure and new rates document attached. Too hard to work out if we're being gipped, but of course we will be. I have a feeling it will be the same whoever we go with.. and purposely just as confusing with all of them. But as Click has offered us a much appreciated price hike only TWO MONTHS into the agreed rates we signed up for, I'm keen to flick the scammers quick smart. But Alinta/Origin/Agl.. aren't they all evil/all suck the pus?

    • I'm in Brisbane and I can say you've probably made the wrong decision.

I was with AGL 10% discount for about 5 years or so, since a member of ozbargain posted the friends and family benefit.

Since then there has been no company that has beaten that in effective discount without some kind of annoying contract or system where I was paying estimated bills.

Alinta was the first with 25% discount, I switched to them, AGL offered me 26%, I went back to them, and now I'm considering going to Alinta again unless AGL offer me 28%.

But my point in all of this is that AGL have actually been great because I've always been able to rely on them for the lowest rates as I believe they legally have to charge that rate.

I've found a lot of other companies try to mislead you.

      • You're probably right, I'm sure I've joined a dud. But that such devious and deep levels of skullduggery can even exist in this country - what's up with that? And what makes you believe that AGL must be bound by some different legal framework than all the other thieves are?

        • +1

My understanding is that AGL, and I think maybe Origin are required to charge the regulated prices set by I think.. Energex?

I can't quite remember but thats my understanding.

  • I just worked out the maths with my current provider Simply Energy.
I'm about 6% better off with Simply Energy than with Alinta, and that's on my current 15% discount.
I'm moving to the 18% discount that RACQ members get that I should've signed up to in the first place.
Check out the energy rate differences and most likely you'll find Simply Energy the cheapest option too.

    • That sounds promising. How/where can one work it all out, as you suggested? Did you do it on a comparison website of some type, or just by comparing bills?

      • I just went to the individual websites and looked up the rates and then did the maths.

  • prompted me to switch to the 21% for Origin's bill and supply. And then I selected 100% green since I realised our overall bill amount has never felt like an issue

  • +2

AGL offering 30% in response, not sure its listed on the website, but they will beat the 28% over the phone.

    • +1

I called AGL and there is no current 30% offer, not in SEQ anyway .. :-( .. !! 28%, same as Alinta, seems to be a match on all rates and Ts&Cs.

    • Yep just got the call from AGL. They initially offered 28% discount, however I noted Alinta has slightly lower supply and solar charges, and slightly higher solar feed in tariff. She then upped the offer to 30%. Needless to say - transfer to Alinta has been cancelled.

      • Thanks for sharing. With AGL at the moment, last deal i was on just lapsed. Standing offers from Alinta and Simply are better than AGL for me but i need to call AGL and see what they will counter with. Let the games begin!

    • +1

Called AGL today, they wouldn't do the 30% for me. I'm in QLD

      • thanks, saves me some time :)

        • Curious, who are you going with.?Altina?

        • +1

@millzy: i went with Alinta, don't have solar and we always use over 1500kwh….but actually after looking at AGL again, usage charges are exactly the same as Alinta but supply charge is only 1c/day higher. it definitely might be worth trying to lock down that 30% discount, which would beat Alinta, and have a bonus $50 sign up bonus… might have a go at this before my cooling off period ends :)

        • +1

          @yupyup:

I ended up going with AGL even though they wouldn't do the 30%, just the 28%

The $50 bonus and flybuys points put them in front. I don't have solar.

        • +1

@millzy: actually after you pointing the $50 + flybuys bonus + flybuys ongoing, that is better than getting 30% (instead of 28%) anyway, as you could only get that over the phone and you'd have to miss out on the $50 +flybuys bonus, which is the better saving (unless you use gargantuan amount of electricity). and definitely beats Alinta (the 1c supply difference works out to <$5 a year haha). Alinta has a 24month benefit period as opposed to 12month with AGL, which is a benefit if you don't want to have to switch again for a while, but i want to get in the swing of doing this more often anyway. looks like i might cancel Alinta and go with AGL after all haha

        • +1

          @yupyup:

          fist bump

  • Just got my first bill from Alinta. Definitely cheaper than it would have been with my old deal on Click and that's still on the 25%.
    Rates are cheaper before discount.

I called to query the bill and the guy said there was a billing issue in QLD and invoices will be re-issued. i did manage to reconcile it though - strange billing with the discount and the feed -in and associated GST.

No surcharge for credit card payment.
