  • People, people!!!
I went to Dick Smith in Woden, Canberra last night and they were offerring it for an additional 10% off the marked price for this weekend only!!!! $434 is too cheap to pass up, really.

    • Wow. Did you get one? $434 for a fully featured notebook is an amazing price. How did the 10% off marked price work? Is that a special Staff Family and Friends event?

  • Yes I eventually got one at close of business today from Dick Smith in Woden. The 10% off was a weekend Manager's special on all laptops for everyone on top of existing offers, and I'm not sure if its in other locations as well - unlikely I'd say. Either way, I paid $583 for it and will fully test the laptop over the next 2 weeks before submitting the claim to Acer for $149 off.

The plan is to then salary sacrifice it during this FBT year (ending 31 March) and thus make a further saving of $175 (because I'm on the 30% tax bracket). And THEN take the $149 cashback, and it comes to $259!!! It's made my weekend!

  • Wow, great information, just three questions regarding salary sacrifice, I knew there was some tax loop hole in purchasing these but up until now did not comprehend it.

What else can you salary sacrifice besides super?
Does the employer have to agree to it?
And do you have to be in a position to use it for work or can a truck driver do it also if he is employed by a company?

    Cheers
    Janice

  • To be honest I am not sure about how salary sacrifice applies to people other than myself (I've only researched it for my specific circumstances). Generally however, your company must have such a scheme in place, and you will be able to sacrifice laptops/pdas and other stuff such as novated leasing which I know nothing about… No idea if a truckie can do it too… I work in IT for a company.

    • Yes your employer must have such scheme. It is well documented and I probably won't call it a "tax loop hole". Basically you buy any laptop you want from your own pocket first, fill in the form, your employer than deduct that from your salary, but also pay you the same amount…

Work best if you are on 45% tax bracket although you probably won't buy a $499 laptop if you earn more than 150k a year (but I could be VERY VERY WRONG here :)

@JANICE750 — best to ask your employer.
