Has nfc and Qi wireless charging, impressive for a $70 phone. What's not so impressive is that it runs windows phone which has been discontinued.

  • +2

Does this have a notification led?

    • +1

      Nopes

      • +1

very stupid designer, to make a phone without notification.

        • It uses glance. No windows Phones have notification led.

    • +6

Don't worry, without apps, the won't be any notifications coming in anyway.

    • +1

Notification LED would indeed be a bonus and would make using this phone as easy as wearing gloves, wouldn't you say?

  • -2

    Windows mobile…

    • +12

      $71.20…

    • Windows CE

  • i would rather pay a little more for a cheap droid from china

    • Agreed. That Sharp F2 from a few days ago was heaps better - although twice the price.

      • +1

        Twice the price. Lol.

        • +1

Twice the price isn't much when you're talking a new phone for $140, or a refurbished old phone for $70.

        • you can even get a cheap driod for around $100 with way better specs than this…i mean come on… 720p screen in 2018!?

        • +1

          @macrocephalic:

Twice is twice. 200%. 100% more, etc.

        • @homersyd:

Specs wise this phone has things you won't find in a cheap Android phone too. Like the qi charging, ois preview camera, and glance screen (always on display). At $70 I doubt you'll find a phone with a better screen than the one on the 830.

  • +22

Good one to threaten the kids with, if you're not good you'll get a Windows phone for your Birthday.

    • +1

haha +1 and they will probably go "which window"?

  • +3

With a windscreen mount thus would be a great GPS unit and Media Player.

    • +4

Your windscreen will get a blue screen.

    • I think you'd be better off getting an old Android second hand. No Google maps on Windows phone.

  • few god things what Lumia phones had include - Cortana - smart voice assistant and that's it…

  • +7

I have one of these, everytime I use it I start off loving how responsive it is and how good the camera is (the rich capture is amazing, although slow).

Then I use the browser or an app and remember why it's a backup phone. Good to take on holidays to countries where you're a good chance of being robbed.

    • +5

You don't have to worry about being robbed of this phone. More like they'll pity you and give you their Android/iPhone or beat you up for wasting their time.

      • +1

Funniest thing I’ve read today. Awesome!

    • +3

So the robber gave you a android phone for free :)

    • -3

Or just go on holidays to places where there's not a good chance of being robbed…

  • These were good when windows supported them. Can't even run Skype anymore plus lack of apps.

  • what?? win mobile has been discontinued? didnt know that!

  • If there is no app, what use is this phone for? Except phone, messaging and GPS? Happy to fork out $70 for it.

    • Throw in a camera and you got yourself a better phone than the Nokia 3310 for just a tiny bit more.

    • Maybe, maybe someone able to Port android. You know xda-developers forum something like that.

    • +2

The Here Maps are pretty good. Plus you can download the maps for offline use.

  • Why would anyone buy a windows phone now days

  • +7

Haha, this is my phone, I bought it for like $300-400 2 years ago. I'll be honest, the UI and the live tiles are amazing, the main thing I loved about Windows.

It's a really good phone, great camera, Windows Phone is really fast but I'll admit, this phone was a lot better on WP8.1 than W10. Windows 10 for Mobile wasn't really properly taken care of and it has a few glitches.

This is an amazing price for a fast phone, but if you need apps, you'll be better off getting an Android. It really depends what you use. It has TripView, Instagram (very slow to start), Messenger (badly written app from FB), Facebook (it's alright), Boost, fully fledged Office (really good apps), Spotify, Menulog, Skype, WhatsApp. However, apps are barely updated now unless they're bug fixes. There are a number of third party apps that can substitute, but not everything. Banking apps are rare (besides CBA) for example. Things like Skip have a good website though which you can use.

It's a really good phone for a backup, or a second phone, or if you need a decent camera, but I personally wouldn't use it for a main phone anymore, windows mobile was well advanced for its time, but never got enough traction from app developers, then missed the mark and then changed CEOs which completely ruined any chance left it had.

I'm honestly considering this deal, but my next main phone is the Nokia 8.

    • Skype has been discontinued.

    • +2

Yes, a kindred spirit! The Lumia 830 was my daily driver from 2015-2017 but I loved the aesthetics of the phone hardware and UI; from a hardware perspective it was quintessential Scandi (compared the dozen iPhone imititations) and the camera punched so well above it's weight. The UI was solid and really snappy that I hardly cared it was a Snapdragon 400.
Still, it was really a pain with the limitations on the app ecosystem and many abandoned features that weren't polished but I learnt to live with it and the quirkiness of the phone made it more endearing to me.
It always got curious looks from people that were genuinely surprised NOKIA was still around post-2010.
Totally agreed, W8.1 was better for it than 10. Once I was forced to upgrade to Win10 it put the nail in the coffin for me and I reluctantly upgraded to Lg G6. My 830 is still in excellent condition and occasionally use it for the media consumption now. Bought a few spare batteries too - replacable batteries ftw.

    Windows 10 Mobile. Sigh.
In the car, I can be notified of a text, ask Cortana to read it, respond to the text - all without moving my hands off the wheel. My 17yo with the GS8 keeps telling me about the ancient tech of my Lumia 950, then I remind him about USB-C (debut S8), double tap to wake (also S8), live tiles (yeah? nah on Android), beautifully working Office apps, and the maps that download and work in the middle of nowhere (ask GMaps to get you from Eliot Falls to Bamaga? Yeah, nah). He then reminds of the apps (ie lack thereof), the camera (err except in low light) and the slow processor (808 v 835), no notification LED (err glance screen does the job thanks).
Thanks OP - just what I need in the cupboard in case the 950 dies. Shame you can't get a green one…
FYI - Messenger (Beta) is actually ok

  • Bought one even though i really don't need it at all haha
    Thanks ozbargain!

    • same here, received the phone and it has some cosmetic scratch….i thought manufacturer refurbished should be totally free from scratching.
      :(
