I guess for a few dollars more you can get the xiaomi 5-1 kit. It ends up being more versatile.

For example you could set up the gateway to sound an alarm, but you could use both the door sensor and the motion sensor in the pack. In this way you could set a rule that the motion sensor is activated only after the door has been opened (this prevents the sensor from going off inadvertently when nobody is there). Then you could use the included wireless button to change that behaviour if you wanted or as a quick way to toggle the device or on off.

After all of that you still have a spare smart socket to play with. For example say you were in the back of a shop and had some music playing, you could set it so that when the door is opened it switches off the radio, allowing you then to be able to hear the gateway go off once the motion sensor has been set off.

So long story short, Xiaomi wins.

what's this xiaomi 5-1 kit? i was just looking into security for a new build home and was tossing up until walls are painted and i can put the traditional PIR sensors and siren box whether I could DIY some sort of cloud based/smart phone accessible camera system? Brother jut got the arlo but have seen the google nest and quality is good, but abit concerned with pricing etc.

How does cheaper chinese banded security systems like the xiaomi compare? I would not want something hard for the novice DIY'er or false alarm tripping all the time, but something reliable that can easily be installed and used to monitor for movement, or by video while on holidays would be great.

Have they invented anything that can function when the wifi/power goes off - i.e. backup via sim card, i assume not and you would need a more local aus product?

  • Works w google home?

    • Guess it does because mydlink works with Google home. But the issue is how do you use this, it requires a power point and sometimes just not practical to find an useful spot for it without resorting to an extension cord. it's just counterintuitive to use normal household voltage for such low power device.

  • Design seems a bit limiting. Running off a wall socket would probably put the sensor behind couches, tables and the like in half of our rooms.

  • firstly I realise not all people will have the following, but its a thought..
I have 4 power points in the roof cavity of my place, 1 is a dedicated power point, the other 3 are for the exhaust fans, i.e. in the kitchen, ensuite and main bathroom. With a decent double adapter maybe with a weather box or with insurance in mind - pay an electrician to change to doubles, no reason why people could not use these points in their home (where they have a similar setup), even if you use an extension cord to get the sensor to the location you need - all wiring is hidden in the roof cavity and the sensor ends up in a useable position. Ive crawled around my roof space when we had mice in the ceiling and its a pain considering not wanting to put my foot through the roof and all the roof trusses etc.
