Fantastic to see you back :)

  • +6

Title says 6GB/s - speed is actually 560MB/s

    • +9

I posted a deal on this last year, apparently there are issues with the drive write speed dropping below that of a 7.2k HDD
      Courtesy of /u/gavmen

    • +5

      They probably meant 6 Gigabit

      • +7

        @bogak
No idea why you were down-voted, i reckon you're right.
OP has mixed the SATA interface speed unit, 6Gb with 6GB

        • +2

Coz ozbargain trolls. Like I give a rat's ass about votes. Seller has capital b as well but I'm sure they meant little b for bits.

  • +3

I thought M.2 drives were generally faster than this? Or is this basically a SATA drive that goes in an M.2 slot?

    • +14

This is SATA M.2. The faster drives use the NvME standard.

  • +4

Why bother with a m.2 that is no faster than a sata ssd? Defeats the purpose.
    Also delivery is steep.

    • +11

Convenience (no additional cabling, small / almost invisible footprint) of having it installed on the motherboard.

      • Buy NVMe for OS if possible though.

      • +2

On many motherboards an m.2 slot disables 2 SATA ports. On some you can pick a PCIE x4 slot instead. Much better off with a SATA drive if this is no faster IMO.

        • +13

Why does building a PC in 2018 still feel like solving a Professor Leyton puzzle? If the m.2 card disables 2 sata slots, and if the two sata slots could run SATA3 in RAID, and if the trains are travelling at 180mph, then which station will the bread maker get off at if she slept for 30 minutes and immediately got off at the next stop.

          @AustriaBargain:
It’s chipset limitations. Chipsets only have a certain number of high speed lanes so the mobo manufacturers actually do a good thing and let you choose how to use them. If anyone is at fault it’s Intel/AMD

        • @ntwigz: Correct. Intel often build in such "features" to avoid cannibalizing their own higher tier products. AMD probably do the same.

        • +2

@Charity: Nope AMD dont cripple MB features like intel do. They also support sockets unlike intel too

Im not fanboy but AMD won me over with the AM4/Ryzen over intel & they will have to do something special to win me back

        • My 4 year old laptop has 2 x m2, and 2 sata ports …..

        • @AustriaBargain: My M.2 is installed and I have SSDs and HDDs on every Sata port which all still work at max. Are you sure about your statement?

        • @ntwigz:

Yeah. Intel has always limited lanes to stupid, irritatingly low levels.

Not even passable levels. Just outright low.

If you have $70 more to spend i'd wait until the eBay 20% off sale starts and get this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-960-EVO-500GB-M-2-NVMe-PC…

Its much faster + 20 GB for not much more. It's a better deal to get a SATA SSD if price is a major concern.

    • +1

I don’t think that seller is part of the 20% off sale coming up…

    • Also is NvME but if your laptop doesn't support NvME it wont boot or they are keyed differently. Best to check.

    • Can someone please link to this upcoming sale 20%?

  • +5

$16 delivery for a tiny 10 grams stick is very overpriced.

    • -1

      Btter safe than sorry

    • +1

I'd prefer a $160 PC component sent in a big box rather than an envelope.

      • +1

It won't cost you more than $8, even with a proper box. Did that for myself not long ago.

        • No, it's not $8.

Standard post is $8.50, no insurance.

Express, which includes $100 insurance, is $11.35. To insure up to $200 is a few dollars more.

You could post it as a letter.. sure, that's cheap. But if I was a shop with a permanent presence, I wouldn't do it for you. As an ebay seller, yes I do it (99% of people choose letter post. It's actually really annoying that they cheap out but I'll lose my money for their cheapness if something goes wrong)

Plenty of laptops now only have an M.2 slot and no 2.5" SATA. And if you dont have the NvME this is a great deal for an upgrade to a 120GB or 240GB often shipped with sub $1000 laptops.

Any tips on cloning for the upgrade? I was considering a caddie which then could be used later for the odl drive as fast storage. Something like this from Computer Alliance https://www.computeralliance.com.au/startech-m.2-sata-extern…

  • +2

Great to see you back altomic :)

  • That's a fantastic price.

  • This isn't as good as 960 evo correct?

    Better than 850 evo?

    • +1

960 evo is Nvme so blows this away buy will cost you~ double this.

The 850evo is also based on newer tech so is superior to this, however costs more than this.

At this price point this is a good deal for the more price conscious person.

  • anyone know if this will work with AM4 mobo? Specifically the ASRock Taichi?

    • Yes, it should work in its Ultra M.2 slot (PCIe Gen3 x4 & SATA3).

      • I already have a Samsung evo 960 nvme ready to go in that slot, this second slot would just be to save the space of using another SSD.

        • I don't think the other slot supports SATA M.2 SSDs, so unless you swap the slots they're used in this may not be ideal.

FWIW, the 960 Evo is Gen2 PCIe x4 according to Gizmodo so no performance should be lost if you were to change slots.

  • Does any one know how I could install this into a macbook air 2013 13inch? Is there an adaptor?

    • This won't work in a Macbook Air. I have your year model and about the only place to get SSD's for Macbook Air's 2013 or later is made by OWC (Other World Computing) and they are incredibly expensive. I so much regret my 128GB Air.

      • There are adaptors out there, see my post below, so best to try and see if they exist on ebay.
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/5527922/redir

That one is specifically for the MBP Retina mid-2012.

Im just confused by all the SSD options….mSata and m.2 SSD. Getting my head around it slowly.

        • From the 2013 Macbook Air and later, Apple did some special trickery to make it all but impossible to use anything other than their own drives. Which means there are no adapters and all but one third party expensive SSD. There are adapters that can connect the apple SSD to an m.2 or msata port, but not the other way around. But if someone can correct me go ahead, I want to upgrade my Macbook Air on the cheap.

A word of warning. I ordered this from Umart on Boxing Day and they still haven’t shipped it. I had a few interactions with their support team who are useless. There’s also a “handling” charge which is on top of the shipping.

  • It's just old "Interface SATA III", so it doesn't have the advantaged of nvme.

  • Does anyone know if this will fit this adaptor?

    • Too bad the 1TB version is disproportionately expensive.

      • yeah… it is $439 for 1TB version

        • It's still cheaper to buy 2 of these and a dual M2 case to make a RAID 0. Way faster as well.

        • I managed to pickup a new unit from Gumtree last weekend for $200. The seller had it advertised for 300 for a couple of weeks, and then within an 8 hours span dropped the price to 250, and then 200. He was telling the truth about it being new as it showed 0 hours on the clock and 0 bytes written when I first plugged it in.

    • BA = TA

      • naah.. I am rookie & just started..
btw thanks BZ ..this is the huge compliment i got.. :)

        • huge compliment

          It's TA you're being compared to 🤣😂

    • Do these really come with only 12 months warranty?

I'm sure my last Intel had 3 years or so…

      • +1

this is for the SATA 540s not the m.2s. Nevertheless the Samsung still kills it

        • +1

$165 is still a pretty decent price for a locally sourced 480GB Intel drive.
