Nice but I've never bothered with Premium (even the always available 'one month free' offer) as I don't own a power meter. I made a small donation and use StravistiX for additional metrics instead: http://thomaschampagne.github.io/stravistix/

  • Thanks, been meaning to check it out. :)

Thanks, worked well in android app.

I use premium on and off over the last few years. I have power meter, so need prem to get extra info.

Best thing about premium is that it looks at all of your old ride data as well. This means you can see your "Fitness and Freshness" history and if you are getting fitter. Also you can look up and old big rides and checkout your "suffer score".

On a bus trip to watch Aus Road Nats :-)

power meter stats are the bomb. even as a bad D-grade critter, the amount of info you can get out of a bike ride is staggering nowadays

      have fun at the Nats!

Yeah you can't hide from power. Is great to see when you are doing it tough in the wind and going slower, but pumping out the watts.

The Nats is always a great day out, get to see Australia's best go around 16 times #BeerTent

        • there's a beertent!? dammit!
i'm planning on being on the side of wilunga hill in a couple of weeks, will be my first trip to actually go watch a race live. i'm such a slack bastard, so many good opportunities to watch aus and/or the world's best in my own backyard and i never go!

gotta go have lunch with my folks today, but will watch it all when i get back :D

Lots of great uses for a power meter. I'm training for the Bright Alpine Audax at the moment. Last two days have ridden 330 km climbing 4800m. I find power is really useful for pacing myself. What I found in this trip though was it helped monitor exhaustion levels too. Yesterday climbing up Mt Hotham towards the end of the day in the stifling heat my heart rate was low. I took this to mean I could increase effort as my power was fairly constant. I bumped it up a bit and within 20 minutes I was totally blown out and had to stop. Looking at it today I can see the drop in heart rate was because I was too exhausted and it had dropped. If I had been a little more switched on I would have understood that a drop in heart rate at constant power over as lengthy ride doesn't mean I'm getting fitter, but more that I have overdone it. A great lesson which may save me from failing on the day from pushing things too hard!!

  • Best thing about Premium is live Segments on your device (Phone or bike GPS).

Offer not available to me, maybe because I've been Premium in the past. May only be for users who've never had it before.

    • No, I got it despite having been on premium previously - maybe it had to be 12 months lapsed.

I dumped premium because they jacked the price and so many things simply don't work properly, like fitness & freshness across sports, searching for segments etc

      • Worked for me on Android and my previous subscription has only just lapsed.

  • Anyone got this deal on the ios app? I can't seem to find it

  • +1

Offer wasn't available to me but I've previously had a 30 day free trial so that's probably why. Good deal to try out Premium but I personally don't think it's worth it for runners (at full price), cyclists definitely get more bang for their buck.

I'm a liar, the offer has just shown up on my account lol.

How can anybody ride a bike without Strava? Absolutely love it! I dont take enough notice of my Data but as others have said I do use it on big rides to work out how much is left in my tank. Powermeter helps as well, nothing like knowing your FTP) and being confident you can hold 250 watts+ for the next 20 mins. Also makes it all the more impressive when you see what the pros are putting out!!

Plus your suffer score. If it's not on Strava it didn't happen ;)

  • Just in time for TDU :)

  • My last 1 month free trial finished just before Xmas, so good timing. Pity my fitness score has dropped since xmas - was 64 and now 53 :-( . Should've done #festive500

  • I can't figure it out… My app says "Get your first two months for null", but when I click onwards it's just the regular subscription…

Android, free account for years, never been Premium…

    • +1

Try force quitting app and try again. Also check you have latest version of app loaded.

      • Thanks! But nope, that unfortunately didn't work, still no deal :)

        • Edit: it just worked! I hadn't used the app for awhile but did today, maybe it wanted activity…

  • Will Premium pick up the extra data and analysis previously entered on the free version?

    • +1

Premium = free version + extra stuff, so you don't lose anything going to premium.

      • Sorry - didn't explain myself very well.

I have been using the free version on my PC and (Android) phone for a couple of months, and so there is a data history which has built up.

If I go Premium, will it incorporate the previous history, and use it in, for example, heat maps? Or will the "extra stuff" only use data from the time I go Premium?

        Thanks

Another issue - I can't see the 2 month offer when I log in on my PC (it does show on the phone). If I take up the offer on the phone, will it update the account on my PC to Premium?

        Cheers

        • +1

History is stored in the cloud, not your device. I check my account on multiple browsers and devices (iOS and Android) and full history is always there.

        • @dischucker:

OK - thanks. I will try it out ……… for 2 months :)

        • @jackspratt:

Just joined up for 2 month trial (via Android), and answers confirmed.

          1. All prior data is showing, and incorporated into heat map.

          2. Appear as premium across 3 devices (PC, tablet & phone - both android).

          Thanks again.

  • I use Garmin cycling computer, and by extension Garmin Connect. Any benefit signing up with Strava? I'm not super serious about cycling, mostly commuting but it's nice to know the stats.

    • Give it a go. You can connect your garmin to strava so it will download automatically after a workout.
Strava is also a social network….most use the free version. You can see what friends are doing and so on.

    • +1

Depends what you're using it for.
If you're only using it to log rides, distances stats, etc. Then Garmin Connect will probably suffice.
Garmin actually has some basic social activity, but no-one I know actually uses it.
The social aspects of Strava are much better, as well as the ride segments.
Premium strava then adds on top even more.

    • +1

The social aspects of Strava arent like Facebook for cyclists. You can 'friend' other cyclists and join virtual cycling clubs. If you friend somebody you get to see their rides and you can click to send them 'Kudos' if you want to encourage or congratulate them for a ride. It is very easy to start a virtual club and many are just groups of mates that create a club to keep in touch regarding rides etc. If you are in a club it gives you weekly stats on who rode the most or climbed the most meters etc. It also has a message board within the club and you can post up pictures or conversations. I get a lot from friends who post upcoming rides along the lines of 'anybody keen for a ride in the hills on Boxing Day, meetup outfront of the pub at 6:30 am' etc etc. It is massive news among the local cycling scene out where i live if somebody breaks the 'King of the Mountain' (KOM) on Strava for one of the local well known climbs.

There are also commercial/professional clubs on Strava, for instance loads of the cycling teams and kit makers are posting now about events they are arranging for fans going across to Adelaide for the TDU. the Rapha club is posting about popup clubhouses they are setting up and rides they are arranging for anybody in Adelaide, Schwalbe tyres put one up the other day as well. I cant remember how many clubs i've joined but I really only take notice of the one relating to main bunch of cycling mates i ride with each week.

    • Another benefit of using Strava is you can also track shorter rides, where you can't be bothered using the Garmin or you are on a different bike, etc. Just pull out the phone app and log a ride and the KM's count to your total. Also, segments are better implemented in Strava, which is really useful for tracking your times up climbs, etc., as it shows all your previous times up the climb and thus represents a track of your improved (or not) fitness.

  • ok so no luck for getting this via a computer or an iPhone. I wonder if I use someone's android phone with my account whether I could get this offer!!

  • I bought this (cos it's $2) but don't have a power meter. Is there anything super useful I can do now? Will be getting cadence on Friday.

    • +1

I like the premium subscription mostly for the 'fitness vs freshness' tracking. It's best using a power meter, but does work with heart rate provided you've set up your heart rate zones correctly.
The workout review features are also pretty good if you're into structured workouts.
Don't forget to look at the premium perks and grab your code for a Wiggle voucher etc, some of them are pretty good.
