FAQ

It's showing me higher AUD price than mentioned in the title
* Choose USD as your currency from top left hand corner. Don't select AUD, always choose to pay in USD, it will work out cheaper even after your credit card conversion fees. Also read the below.

How do I ensure I get the cheapest AUD price possible
* To avoid higher currency conversion rates and to get cheapest price from these Chinese websites, you should get a credit card that charges zero currency conversion fees. 28Degrees, Bankwest Zero, Coles Mastercard are generally popular. Irrespective of what credit card you use, always choose to pay in USD on these Chinese websites, (Choose "USD" from top left hand corner). Additionally set your Paypal so it "bills you in the currency on Seller's Invoice". To set your PayPal account this way permanently, follow the steps shown in these snapshots [Highly recommended]

    my review:

Originally, when it was first released, it was meant for the chinese market and required a chinese mobile phone number to register. About 2 weeks ago, they released an update allowing you to activate via email. The dashcam needs to be registered via the app to work, after that it works fine, and records to the SD card. It's a shame because imo it's pretty good value (price/form factor etc) but the original hiccup could be it's downfall as people will now always assume it's chinese market only. Just like Kryptonite and the bic pen hack.

Has a small 70mai logo in the top left. And the time on the top right (bright orange) which syncs through the phone app.
The app is basic, and there's room for improvement. Just waiting until a proper translation comes out and people can adjust everything. App is a mirror of the other Mi dashcams (once you get past activation).

I believe it's supposed to have voice recognition, but i dont speak cantonese(?). When it starts, the LED on the side (faces away from the driver) flashes green to say recording. There's also a little chime when it turns on and off.
Quality is ok, and advertises a good sensor. I don't really have anything to properly compare it to. It seems fine imo. The build quality and form factor is great. It came with some anti static clear plastic you're meant to stick on your window first. It fell off after 10 minutes, not sure what I was doing wrong. So i just stuck the adhesive straight to the glass.
Keep in mind, this is a 3rd party product produced under the Xiaomi logo. Not saying it's good or bad. Xiaomi generally doesnt have great software to go with their hardware, and it's generally left to the community to hack the devices and get their maximum capability. That has already happened with some of xiaomi's dashcams, phones, and other smart home devices.

From vlc these are it's specs
Codec H264 MPEG 4 AVC (part 10 – avc 1) Resolution 1920x1090 Display resolution 1920x1080 Frame rate 29.9700 Decoded Format >Planar 4:2:0 YUV AUDIO Codec: IMA WAV ADPCM Sample Rate 16000 hz Bits per sample 16

    • I like how the Google video is dated a day after it was published.

    • +2

I've got one, but yet to install it. Form factor is nice compared to other 'Xiaomi' dashcams.

One of the reasons I haven't installed it is because there is no way to turn off the sound (Chinese voice and tones). I'm fearing I'll be haunted by this every time I turn on and off the ignition. One option is to open it up and physically disable the speaker.

      • +7

Opened mine this morning to disconnect the speaker. One screw driver and 5mins from start to finish. Would recommended it.

        • +1

          Great! Thanks for the info.

Ps. Where is the screw? Behind the sticker?

        • +1

Can you please elaborate? I’m at a point where I’m thinking to just remove it from my car due to the sound alone. Thanks.

        • +1

That message "Sai Mai Kaye She Loo Shee"….So annoying! Luckily there is an option to lower down the volume.

        • Opened mine this morning to disconnect the speaker. One screw driver and 5mins from start to finish. Would recommended it.

Any hints as to how you got the case open?

        • +3

Absolutely. One small phillips screw under the sticker opens half the camera shell, four small screws of the same type inside that side release the other side of the shell from the camera guts. This second shell also has the speaker attached via a ~3cm wire with a detachable white plug on the circuit board (guts) end.

Could take photos if you like but its seriously very easy.

No more "Sai Mai Kaye She Loo Shee" :)

        • +1

          @Surge86:

"No more "Sai Mai Kaye She Loo Shee" :)" Omfg I'm crying right now!

Thanks for the info, helped a lot!!

      • Can turn it down hopefully they get it with english speaking one day.

      • +4

the latest firmware allowed me to turn the volume down. (not mute though)

    • really difficult to see number plates in these videos. It's good enough for proving who's at fault in a crash tho.

      • +6

youtube compression partly. I'd have to upload something elsewhere.

      • +6

That second video is mine. Reading number plates is fine in the original video off the SD card. As Davo1111 mentions, YouTube's compression doesn't give these cameras justice.

    • does it have an app for iPhone ?

    • Seems like a lot of glare and reflections from the windscreen. I wonder if dashcams normally have a polarising filter.

      • +1

this is perth, so the sun is closer (hell). :P

A lot of people do diy polarising filters, there are some commercial products that are magnetic and clip on. Apparently you need to take off the filter at night though.

  • +11

Nice review. It's for clowns at 00:32 that we need dashcams :-)

  • I've got one recently and found it pretty good, in day time at least (haven't tested during night time)
Easy to set up, had it done within 5 minutes

  • -3

By the time it arrives, the next model would've come out, so for those reasons I'm out.

    • +6

Hm… If you're expecting XiaoMi to release the next version in about 2 weeks, then fair enough.

    • +3

      Is that you Mark Cuban?

    • That's funny, ordered mine on 3/01/18. With Australia Post for delivery today 12/1/18. That is good delivery time in my opinion.

  • I can’t see the section to enter the discount code

    • Never mind worked it out .

Second time buying this camera for my dad
Have one installed on mine and it works fantastic and simple to install aNd set ups

      • What's the video quality like?

  • -3

dont buy, i have one, it talks chinese, no idea what its talking about..

  • is the code entered after i register an account?
And Can i buy two units with the discount?

    • Code is entered after registering an account and in the normal check out (don't paypal checkout)

      Don't know about 2 units

  • +8

FYO - LitB sends account recovery password by email in clear text… might not be the best site to use your credit card with, go PayPal.

  • +5

Have one of these in a current Hilux SR5, doesn't interfere with the factory DAB+ like the G1W-CB that I had prior. Once set up and with the volume at min. you don't hear much of the Chinese voice, most of the time with startup/shutdown it's just the little piano tune.

    • +6

Yep agree with this. Install the latest FW and turn the volume down, it's not a problem unless you sit there listening for the couple of startup words that are said so softly, it really doesn't matter.

At the price, the video quality is incredible.
Number plates a bit tricky to read at distance but will be fine to prove an at fault claim.

Tiny camera and works great with a 64gb card.

    • How is its video quality compared to G1W-CB? (I assume you also have a G1W-CB).

      • +2

I had one of these for a day and ended up giving it to my sister in law as I could barely make out other car number plates. My G1W-CB has significantly better picture quality.

  • +1

Can it record in a loop?

    • If it is like any other dashcam;

it will record 3 ~ 5 minute clips continuously. Once the card is full, it will overwrite the oldest clip / file. There should be minimal to no "gap" between the video clips / files.

  • Thanks - bought one. Have wanted a dashcam for a while and this looks decent.

  • Looks good.

  • The new de facto dash cam. Feels higher quality than the g1cb one. But doesn't have screen. Otherwise I think it's pretty sweet

  • not as good as previous deals

    $27.00 USD (~ $35.63 AUD)

  • How's Lightinthebox shipping time? Fast or slow?

    • +1

Allow about 4 weeks and you'll be fine.

  • Anyone have a good deal for a memory card for these? I need to grab two, I'm thinking 64gb, but will use 32gb if it's suitable?

  • +2

Assuming this doesn’t have park mode?

How does this compare to the other Xiaomi dashcam?

Worth getting this or spending $80-$100?

  • How does it initiate recording? Based on motion? Does it have parking mode? How many minutes it can record?

    • +1

It turns on and starts recording when you turn on your car.

      • Thanks, I sometimes prefer to record when parked too so that if someone hits the car when you're not around, it's easy to prove.

        • any device that can do that?

I also got hit by a vehicle when my car was parked and I was not there.

        • @pinkybrain:

It's usually the g-sensor. Any movement (depending on sensitivity set) will activate and start recording.
A lot of dash cams have it.

        • -1

          @linton:
          except this one..

do you have a links for dash cams that can record while we parked?

  • Very keen. How is this dashcam compared with the others that are on ozbargain lately like the viofo ones?

  • +1

    Thanks OP!

Was waiting for this deal, bought one

  • I get: "Sorry, your coupon has exceeded the maximum limit for usage."

    • Sorry, your coupon has exceeded the maximum limit for usage.

  • Got three dashcams in my rickshaw already. Ordered 4th one. Thanks OP!

  • +1

Just got mine from the last deal, threw in a 64gb sd for $33 and it's working great. Opened it up and disconnected the speaker so the crazy Asian lady does not talk to me every time I start the car.. guess I will reconnect when the firmware allows English or disabling the voice. One thing to note. Remember to remove the small plastic shipping protector from the lens, I missed it and wondered why the image quality was not great.

    • +2

The exact same mistake I did, forgot to remove the lens protector :)

    • Morris, how did you open the case? A plastic pry tool? Does it just unclip without any damage?

  • This camera is not as good as I hoped it would be and apart from the price, I don't see it as good value. I bought one in the last deal to replace my G1W-CB as it doesn't shut down fast enough when I turn off the ignition and corrupts the last file. The 70 Minute did better in this aspect, as it is not a capacitor camera, but I could not make out number plates unless I was immediately behind a car. (Yes, I took off the little bit of plastic on the lens) The G1W-CB shows better detail from adjoining lanes and oncoming traffic, so I have gone back to that and just switch off the camera before turning off the engine.

    • does the that G1W-CB record number plates clearly?

what is the use of number plates recording for other cars besides the one in front of you?

Aren't most minor accidents due to rear ending the car in front and/or a car behind has rear ended you?

      • Yes, it records them very clearly and I wouldn't want to go backwards in quality. I've had to report a driver who side swiped me and then did a runner. He was not in front of me and it would have been difficult to report if the number plate wasn't recorded.

        • thanks for the scenario..

I can see now why it would be good to record number plates besides the one in front.

Do you have number plate footage of G1W-CB and the 70 minute for comparison?

That's interesting that 70 minute don't record number plates clearly
since it is suppose to have a good quality camera lens and it also records in 1080p.

        • I don't have anything readily available, but these youtube links that may help you. This from the 70 Minute and this is from the G1W-CB. Set the resolution to 1080p on both videos and then pause it when a car is to the left of the driver.

  • any more codes?
already have one - and looking to buy 1-2 more
its a great dashcam for the price.
lacking features of $150+ cams - but good to record while driving in the event of an idiot and the videos are not worse/better than those 1080p ones.
maybe the 4k ones this year would be worth the upgrade…

  • +2

Here is some footage from this afternoon, looks ok here but locally looks better again figuring it's the shitty encoding of the site. Picked an image of a car stopped Infront of me to settle the licence plate issue. https://streamable.com/wpbo8

Edit. If your viewing on mobile force it to desktop mode and for some reason it looks better.

Here is a screen shot taken directly from the mobile https://imgur.com/a/aJiG8

    • That actually looks better than what I was getting from mine. I might have kept it if I had that result, but I think the G1W-CB is still better. The other minor niggle I had with the 70 minutes is you can't see the ring light that tells you the status of the unit. It was obviously designed for left hand drive vehicles.

  • +1

Is there a way to record an emergency clip at the moment? As in, save the current clip so it doesn't get recorded over.

The English instructions say it can be done with an English voice command ("record video"), but the whole camera is still in Chinese so it unsurprisingly doesn't work. Hopefully the English manual entry means a full English rom will be coming soon!

    • +1

I read in a review that the Chinese model cannot be changed to English. If you want English voice commands, you will have to wait until the English model is released and buy that one.

  • Are people registering via the Android App ?

Coz I tried using the ios App and all it says is you must use a Chinese fone number to register

    • The Android app worked for me. Don't have an iPhone, so someone else will have to answer about the iOS app.

    • how did you go? i'm having issues connecting my android (pixel xl). i got it going with an iPhone though.
While i can register, I can't seem to connect to the hotspot and progress to the next step.

      • Worked with my Pixel 2. Try connecting to the hotspot manually through the phone's wifi settings maybe?

  • can i upload the videos to my computer using the usb cable?

  • +1

FYI - ordered on this deal and have received mine! Seems to be pretty good, but haven't installed it in a vehicle yet.

  • Does it come with an SD card included?
