Thin foam mats? Shouldn't you be practising in the streets to toughen your feet up?

    • +6

Back in my day you use to kick tree trunks. Scoff

  • +2

Yeah I wouldn't be trusting these to have much of an effect if you land hard and small mats mean a much higher chance of getting a finger or toe caught in the gap where they join. These are more for camping or protecting the floor from dropped weights etc. rather then human safety.

    • +3

At this price, I can just double up the layers

      • +1

you'd get the thickness but they'll be a bit unsteady compared to a solid piece I reckon, at our Dojo we use 30mm thick mats and they are still a bit hard to be thrown on for beginners.

      • what do you reckon about supergluing the layers together?

I bought the 1m x 1m ones from ebay several years ago and the first thing that came off was interlocking bits so putting them all together (4 x 3 layout) needs some forethought nowadays.

do keep in mind that as it's fairly thin the mats do detach from each other much more easily than the thicker versions

        • A roll of tape would probably do it or some lino over the top.

  • +2

They're just price beating Aldi as they have them in their upcoming catalogue.

    • +3

As someone who was already planning to grab a few of them from Aldi next Wednesday, I'm more than happy for Bunnings to continue this trend :)

      Works out much cheaper.

      • +3

The Aldi ones are 60cm rather than 50cm, and come in a pack of six instead of four. So, per square metre, the prices are almost identical ($4.60 Bunnings, $4.63 Aldi).

        • +1

Yeah I'm wondering if the Aldi measurements are taking the side clip on bits into account by default for those stated dimensions.

I already have one set of theses Bunnings ones from a while back, I might measure them up tonight to see if they are 50cm+10 with the edges on, which I believe may be the case and would make them more or less the same product.

        • Yeah, I got both versions, Aldi are bigger 60cm without any edging, Bunnings version is only 50cm with one side edged, so slightly smaller if you take the edging off. Not sure if they interlock, haven't unpacked it but if they do, one will still be smaller than the other.

    • +1

The Aldi ones are different - they're packs of six with the outside edges squared off so can't be extended and interlocked beyond the six.

      • Which one is better?

      • +1

If you look closer, the edges are the same as the ones at bunnings. You can remove side pieces to extend the mat if needed

        • Oh cool, thanks

Edit: Well I can't see that on the Aldi site, but I have no reason to doubt you

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music. It was developed in Brazil mainly by Angolans, at the beginning of the 16th century

    • +2

It's more fun if you read it as chupacabra.

  • I've cut the edges off and used them as temporary kitchen flooring. It's great.

  • would this be a decent surface for using the skipping rope?

    • +1

Yeah using one will give you some good cushioning but if you wear shoes while doing so, as is usually the case, the mats will wear out a lot quicker.

Using two would probably be better for the mat but make skipping much harder.

Cool. Now my kids finally have something to sleep on.

    • +7

      Thanks dad!

    • Nice Christmas presents for the little blighters. But will they get one square each or a whole 4 pack?

    • +1

Hey Dad, can we please get them now and not wait till Christmas Day?

      • +1

Sure, Christmas Eve it is. Now go to your room.

        • +1

          Room??? That’s a bit la-dee-da! U meant closet, right?

        • @T-Quizzle: Under the sink

    • Too much smashed avo?

  • +1

Would this be ideal to use with a home gym? Or would it be a little too spongy being 12mm thick?

    • -1

its only ~1cm thick, should be fine, not 12cm!

      • +2

        He wrote mm

    • +1

These types of mats are spongey. You couldn't lift on it and it would not provided protection for dropping weights.

      • These types of mats are spongey.

Stack a few and you got yourself a cheap trampoline.

    • Good to protect the carpet from heavy imprints.

Uh… An ozbargainer that does capoeira? Do you mean on Xbox something?

  • +3

As someone who's trying to get into prop making. Buying as much of this as I can fit in my car!

    • +1

Didn't mean to vote but 12mm is pretty thick for props making. Usually it's 3mm or 5mm

      • +2

        Gotta bulk up sometimes…

      • This stuff doesn't work too badly for armour and layering up for other bits. As an example, I used three layers previously for Tracers guns from Overwatch.

Will these stop 350fps+ arrows? May use them as backing for hunting practice. hmmmm

    • +5

350 frames per second. That's damn fast.

      • +9

Irrelevant. Human eye can't see more than 30fps.

        • +3

what about special gsync and freesync arrows?

        • +1

How Can Mirrors Be Real If Our Eyes Aren't Real?

        • Don't worry. I am sure the rise of AI will fix that.

        • I wear glasses. I see at least double that with spectacles

      • yeah, relatively new bows in the 70lb+ category are pushing 350fps independently tested. I'm currently using crossbow targets and they still shoot through.

    • +1

No, these won't, but I hear the neighbour's Mercedes Benz SUV is excellent for stopping high velocity arrows.

      • +1

I've got a hole in my 2mm sheet steel shed from a shoot through on my target.

The neighbour only has a Cayenne :(

    • No x10

I think this is what OzBargainer m8 needed before he did Jap Jiu Jitsu

  • Any good for sound absorption?

    • No.

These are closed cell foam. Open-cell foam is much better for sound absorption.

Plus, 12mm is very thin for sound absorption anyway.

    • There are better things around the same price for sound absorption. Check out Selby Acoustics (not affiliated).

    practice my Capoeira

    Humble brag 😊

    • +2

That's bloke code for bikram yoga

  • Can these be used outdoors?

  • +1

…I want these for the garage. Lots of stock?

    • +1

I'm thinking about the same, would it be too soft for garage application? Are you intending to cover the entire garage, a large section of it, or only a small area? I wonder if they are difficult to keep clean, to sweep, or will they move around.

      • +1

not the whole garage just around 2.5 x 2.0 metres of it in front of my work bench and where i work on my bikes, maybe some around my warehouse style shelving…i figure itll be nicer to stand on for extended periods of time and also a great way to cushion the impact of a dropped tool or part…

        • thisd be too soft and thick. you might want a rubber flooring or similar.

        • @Kambo_Rambo: thanks for the headsup…ive got rubber floor matting in some areas around the outside of the house already, i can see that if its 'foam' it might not be so appropriate for what i want it for

  • +3

These are great to put underneath an inflatable pool.

  • while the top is slip resistant surface
    the bottom is not
so if it is on a smooth surface you need to put something else underneath (or wedge it against something) to stop the whole thing from moving

  • Only $9.20 to make yourself a bed!

  • DIY Acoustic foam?

    Eddy Gordo is that you?
