Cheapest Biggest Fan with Lowest Power Usage no more than 200W (Buying 1-3 Need Delivery to 2780)

Summer is here so buying some fans for different rooms in the house.

Mainly bedrooms and maybe one common room for when the breeze dies down.

minimum needed 1 for my tiny room maximum needed 3 if my housemates also want one.

need delivery to NSW 2780

Preferably standing fans I suppose but for my room alone I have a chair and side table next to my bed I can put a non standing up right fan next to me if it is better power efficiency usage wise and cost wise.

I guess bonus points if it can act as a lamp and fan means not having to reach for my far lamp at night when going to sleep (still need a bayonet B22 smart light for that one so I can remote it off and on whenever I want)

As always lowest cost wins this means both initial cost and running costs.

Best I have seen so far is a 40W standard up right fan with all the goodies such as timer, oscillating, speed etc but that is pretty standard I'm sure there might be some smart fan somewhere maybe and still not be like 200W to power.

W = wattage or watts

Ozbargain show me what you got.

Also looking into maybe a small air conditioner for a tiny bed room if it meets a certain budget but that is for another day standard fan first since this will be nearly running 24 hours night and day.

If you have already researched into the best air conditioning unit that doesn't need installation or any diy renovation let me know.

Just need one for a very small room (fits about 2-3 king sized beds max sorry don't have a tape measure on me atm I have one coming from eBay).

Thanks guys hope you all aren't also suffering during this summer stay cool and hydrated.

Edit: anyone got any experiences with tower fans example these

  • $12 pedestal fan from Bunnings. 45W power usage. Might not be a smart fan, but the difference in price between that and anything else pays for a lot of leccy. :)

    • Got a linkedy link?

      • Saw the need for delivery, so not sure if you have a Bunnings near you. Mitre 10 should stock similar ones, but it's basically, the cheapest, crappiest pedestal fan out there.

        https://www.bunnings.com.au/click-40cm-pedestal-fan_p4442054

It doesn't have a remote or a timer. But it's quiet enough, shifts a reasonable amount of air and 45W is cheap to run. Seems like just about everyone has a few of these up here in QLD.

But whatever fan you get, make sure it's easy to take apart to clean. Like PC fans, the edges get dusty, which can have a big effect on performance. Tower fans are great for saving space, but can be really annoying to clean.

        • +1

Awesome thanks for the link. Yeah looking at a 50cm fan for now.

Uses more power at 75 watts but might be overall better with remote control functionality.

Don't wanna skimp on the bedroom for sure.

        • @AlienC:

Looks fine, that. Should move plenty of air. Remote control is handy, but I just put a fan near enough to the bed to reach it.

Or there's always something like this:
          https://www.bunnings.com.au/dynabreeze-900mm-black-industria…
Might need to get a nailgun to go with it, just to keep everything tidy.

        • @NoPantsToday: lmao well if I can convince my local group that it would be a good investment for social gatherings I might just be able to buy it lol but then somebody else might nick it haha lol

    • +1

A Wi-Fi enabled socket for $10-$18 makes any fan a smart fan.

  • "researched into the best air conditioning unit that doesn't need installation…"
"very small room (fits about 2-3 king sized beds"

huh? sounds pretty big to me.

    • It's actually more closer to 1.5 king sized beds but I didn't want to depress myself too much while I was typing it lol.. something something dream of a better future to achieve it something something.

  • You sure you want a 200W fan? Either its going to be so large that it dominates the room, or its going to be so powerful it will assault your eardrums and send all your papers into a whirl

I have one of these and I find it too powerful. It stands about knee height and runs about 100w at max. I bought it for doing situps while watching anime, but to be able to hear anything I had to turn the volume up to 11

    • Sorry I was thinking too maximum high ceiling for power usage I'll edit it. Was honestly just trying to cover all extreme use cases to get a feel of my varying options.

  • It's 41.9c outside my bedroom right now, my bedroom is about 3.4m x 3m and it's about 27c in here.
I have my gaming PC turn on right now it's idle now though so not a lot of heat coming from it but some.
Window seal isn't 100% as it's one of those push out from the bottom ones and i haven't got anything yet to make a better seal other than some cardboard for the side triangle openings.

    I use this portable aircon.

For Fans i have a this 40 cm desk fan on my desk and this 46 CM pedestal fan behind me.

I'd advise to get this 45CM fan though not the one i have as it pushes ALOT more air, i have this one in the lounge room as there isn't a ceiling fan.
I dont use fans when i have the air con on obviously.

    • Thanks this is exactly what I needed.

Yeah holding off on the pc buy until after summer.

Lost too many machines to overheating it's like playing pc monitor the situation on hardest difficulty.

In winter though my temps can reach some juicy sub 10'C easily so there is that.

      Cheers thanks.

Btw what is the hourly power usage on that air conditioner?

      Not 4.4kw is it

      • Yeah ive turned off my Ryzen 1700's Overclock to reduce heat in my room.
No OC i get 59c under load OC it hits 77c (69c two months ago when it wasn't as hot.) i wasn't worried about that temperature but it really heated up my room.

        Now idea sorry.

        Manual

        • Cheers thanks 1750 watts.

    • Tell me you didn't spend $1100 on a portable air conditioner

      • Not this one i got lucky and picked it up from a FB buy an sell page for $200

Though i also have the 6KW version that i paid $800 brand new but i dont use it for my bedroom it used to be used in the lounge room but have since moved so i dont use it at all right now.

        • So you're saying it's free or selling for $50? Lol joking

        • @AlienC: lol no way these are awesome Aircons.

Check Facebook Marketplace Gumtree and Ebay and you might get lucky i see one for $250 on my facebook market place if you're willing to drive to gosford lol
They are bloody heavy to lift though lol

        • @Axelstrife: yah all good haha lol this was just preliminary research and tests to find some good recommended fans.

Have some good info now might hit up the usual second hand places now lol.

How about $150? Haha lol joking joking I don't want to even think about those electricity costs atm.

        • @AlienC: I live in Penrith an air con is a must imo.

        • @Axelstrife: I know them feels

  • +1

I want a fan that mines bitcoins whilst you sleep.

Oh wait, no that's a PC- except it makes it hotter inside than outside.

Need is a PC that cools as it mines. Some kind of blockchain reversing AI. Probably already on kickstarter, successfully funded.

  • Leaning towards this one now if I can confirm remote control usage unless I find a better one.

Yeah 40 cm looks a tad too small it's 45cm or higher for me.

Mistral 50cm White Pedestal Fan $46.00

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/mistral-50cm-white-pedestal-fan_…

    Quick specs

    50cm
    Plastic blades
    Plastic casing
    Oscillating function
    3 speed control
    75 watt power hourly usage
7.45 kg a bit on the heavy side some of the other fans ranged from 2.5kg to 5.5 kg
    155 cm max height
    Remote control (to be confirmed)

Still tempted to just grab two to three $12 40cm 40-45 watt "dumb" fans and call it a day but I am obsessed with anything with decent extra functionality.

Hmm. I guess I could go without a few kebabs and pizzas for awhile haha lol.

    • Ktown has fans for sale at BigW, Woolies, Target, Coles and Home Hardware. Also Leura Woolies has some too, down the front west corner, surprisingly 3 or 4 different models.
I don't pay extra for remotes and things, just the cheapest pedestal or floor fan.

I admit we had ours on low while we slept Friday and Saturday night, but it hasn't been that hot in the mountains. Not over 31 degrees I think.
Makes my lawn grow like crazy, and too hot to mow. I'll have to send the teenagers out to cut it.

In related news, I will soon need a decent Dan Murphy's beer deal…

      • Well not sure where you are right now but it was 35'C today where I was at.

Thank God it's cooler now but January February is going to be a killer :(

Also if I plan on buying a pc or some consoles and a tv in future I might buy an extra fan just to keep them alive in hot months.

My room even with all my Windows open can get pretty hot.

        • It got to 32 in Katoomba today, last Thursday and Saturday, which is 10degrees above average. There won't be many days hotter in Jan or Feb.
37 is the all time hottest. Note the real time temps for Katoomba on the web are reading from Mount Boyce, up past Blackheath. The daily temp is a reading from an observer in Katoomba.
There is also a weather station on top of the council building:
          https://www.bmcc.nsw.gov.au/weather/Katoomba/
But it needs Flash, which I no longer use.
If you use Facebook, look up Blackheath Weather. It is a site by and amateur meteorologist who provides extremely detailed local forecasts when there is some interesting weather about. Sometimes in verse too.

To keep cool, pop down to the pool before they close it, or head to Ingar if you don't mind the snakes!

The fan won't do too much to cool a PC, it already has a fan built in, so you will just be blowing more warm air at it.

        • @mskeggs: there is a pool in Katoomba? How much is entry costs

        • @AlienC:
          $4.40, I think.
It is down the hill behind Coles to the west, walkable, but a steep hill coming back. It is actually a great place to take a picnic in the evening, when it is open till 6pm (7pm weeknights), and the old racetrack behind it is popular to ride bikes or walk dogs..
          http://www.bmleisurecentres.com.au/centres-/katoomba-sports-…
Blackheath pool is another good spot about 15mins walk from the train station. And Lawson Pool is nice too.

        • @Baysew:
The teacher quoted in the article teaches one of my kids Geography ;-)
I don't think they will close the pools. The main one in question at Katoomba is a 50m outdoor solar heated olympic pool from the 70s. It has an indoor 25m heated pool in the same complex, so is a target to cut costs.
The indoor 25m is a vastly different experience to the outside pool, surrounded by a wading pool for infants, a grass hill, picnic tables etc.
But they both tick the box "swimming facility" if that is the extent of the analysis.

It is actually really depressing that the infrastructure the community has invested in over decades is being considered for rationalisation.
Basically, why do we have to be always maximum efficiency? Why can't we have nice things sometimes?

        • @mskeggs: Some people won't let the old pools go without a fight.

Community groups swim against the tide in a bid to save outdoor pools

  • fan that meets your power reqiurements

Stick space blankets on the windows Reflects the heat, and you can still see out of them. Apply by spraying window with water, then pressing space blanket up against it and smoothing out any bubbles

Alternate idea, buy a bunch of computer fans and bolt together with mechano to make a giant wall of fans. They're brushless and pwm controllable. Get em cheaply from here

    • Great choices I might actually give then all a go especially the cpu fan if I can figure out the next step.. combining them should be easy but finding a safe and good power source might be tricky since I don't want to do too much diwhy on it.

Might pass on the industrial fan unless we hit another bad 40'C hot weather or my sanity cuts out during a heatwave.

  • Hi. I know that the all possible contingencies thing, is your particular thing…

    So…
    He's local…
Have you considered OzB's mskeggs, languidly fanning you with a giant palm leaf? It's a possibility. It's an image. Bargain & otherwise friendly, almost certainly energy-efficient, etc. Please consider / I know that you now will :)

Otherwise, DC fans have been posted on OzBargain before. Could well be good and quieter than AC fans. Ask someone in one of those threads if reliable, stayed quiet, haven't 'sploded like an AAA-powered touchlight maybe could…

No, but seriously, Mr. Skeggs with a palm leaf is the way to go.

    :-)

P.S. Outlander has to try and keep his house cool, for other reasons.. Don't ask :(

    • If the leaf is more than 75cm I'm down haha lol
