You should add that they are only valid for 3 months from date of purchase - which is absolutely ridiculous.

The sooner a public train line is built and removes this private company's (yet advertised as public transport) monopoly, the better!

    • Damn it, I would have bought some to use in April :(

They used to be valid for six months.

    • Isn’t there already a train line from Broadmeadows?

      • +1

Do a google map to see the travel time from the airport to the city on public transport..

        • +1

And even then, it's going to give you a best case scenario. I did the tightarse route from the airport a few weeks ago, and it ended up taking close to two hours.

        • +1

          @gilbarc:

I'd still do this option to stick it up Skybus, I try to not use their service.

I had to once as I did want the quickest, but trying to get to Melb Airport in peak hour the Skybus literally went walking pace up tullarmarine fwy.

        • @gilbarc: It's never been more than 15 or so minutes later than scheduled in my experience.

        • +1

@placard: I still try to if I'm not in a hurry and can spare the extra hour or so.

        • +2

We take the train to Glenroy station and take an uber from there. It's faster and cheaper than taking the citylink at peak hour, and avoids the awful 901 connection.

    • +6

The price varies depending on whether you're a single adult or a family, whether it's a one-way trip or return, and whether you're going to/from Tullamarine or Avalon. No way to put them all in the title, but it's 15% off all of them.

      • This.

  • +2

    Thanks, legend.

Melbourne is a fantastic city but unbelievable that in 2018 you still have to pay something like $38 return to the airport on overcrowded buses.

    • -4

you still have to to pay something like $38 return to the airport on overcrowded buses.

      just use an o-bike

      • Do they have o-bike to carry infant?

        • no, but SkyBus doesn't have proper infant seating either…

        • Good point. Uber it is then.

        • @tranter:

          Uber has infant seating?

        • @tranter:

          Uber it is then.

Do they provide infant seats? They never used to.

        • No, you're right. In Singapore they do.

  • Sorry for asking a stupid question, but how do you apply the code? I can't find any place to put it in.

    • Found it. Never mind!

  • +10

A true ozbargainer would take a train to broadmeadows station and then the 901 bus towards the airport (Tullamarine)

    • +5

A true Oz bargainer would pray that we get the likes of Uber carpool. Was a fraction of the cost in the states compared to X, and met some really cool people while saving a fistful of cash from JFK to NYC

    • Just wondering I'm visiting Melbourne next month and I've read about the Broadmeadows option.

I'm not too familiar with the suburb(since I'm from Sydney) but people online have said it isn't the safest suburb? Could a Melbourne ozbargainer
maybe clarify this? What is the Sydney equivalent suburb of Broadmeadows just to get an indication.

      • I only visited Melbourne just last week and took this option, I didn't find the route a problem. There are usually police officers at the train stations at night, and the bus stop for the 901 is literally right outside the train station entrance. Didn't feel unsafe at all although it wasn't late at night

Just a tip, the bus terminal for public buses is by terminal 4 at the airport

      • I've done this once before at night - only thing of note is that there was a rowdy bunch of teens in one of the carriages and more and more would join at every station (there were probably 20-30 of them by the end). Also I believe every station on that line had 2 cops patrolling that night.

Did it "feel" the safest? Nope, but then again objectively it was probably completely fine - neither the other passengers nor the cops seemed the least bit perturbed. Cheap as chips as well.

    • +1

I have done that a few times but never again. I came back late one night and after getting to Broady, I found the trains replaced with buses, the bus dropped me off at North Melbourne station, it was such a bloody hassle, 3 hours to get home.

  • +1

Why can't we just have normal Met buses that go to the airport? Why do we need a special dedicated company? The Skybuses have the advantage of luggage space and free wi-fi, though.

    • +5

Because normal buses make a loss, as people wouldn't/couldn't pay for them. People will always be willing to shell out for the airport, so the government sells a concession to one provider, who in turn overcharges.
I'd say don't worry about building a train line, just block off one lane of the Tulla and make do Skybus for ten bucks (public run, but a premium service). Problem solved for a fraction of the cost.

      • agreed. don't need a train I reckon.

  • +3

I don't understand all the negativity. They're clean, efficient, regular, reliable, and way cheaper than a taxi. I use them all the time.

    • +1

For a city such as Melbourne there should be rail directly to the airport. A breakdown or crash on the freeway, you have trouble.

For more than 1 person you may as well take an Uber, and get dropped off right where you want.

      • ok, but in the absence of a train or any friends, it's an excellent service.

        • Yes, for what it is you could say it's a reasonable service (although expensive).

But it's really an embarrassment especially for overseas visitors from places such as Europe where comfortable trains are the norm to and from airports.

        • +1

          @tranter:

Why couldn't they have built Melbourne Airport 10 min from the city like in Sydney and Adelaide? Problem solved!

        • +1

          @MrZ:

Well it's closer than Stockholm Arlanda airport is to Stockholm city, which is 42km!

So maybe Melbourne is not an embarrassment after all for Swedish arrivals.

        • @tranter: Until they get to baggage and customs, Arlanda is a far less intimidating airport and tourist-friendly.

We are more closer to Skavsta…

        • @tranter:

Narita is about 60km from central Tokyo too.

        • Europe where comfortable trains are the norm to and from airports

Where you pay normal fare and none of this laughable $15 to access the station platform, like Sydney. I wonder if Melbourne will try that stunt too, if ever they get trains to the airport.

        • @dazweeja: But in Japan they have fast and punctual rail service.

      • +1

Melbourne train reliability seems to plummet any time there's rain falling from the sky or on a moderately hot day.

    • I second this as well. Have used it twice when down in Melbourne and it was great (both times flew in on Sunday morning for work, so could have been smoother than weekday traffic).

  • Here’s hoping they run a similar or better special around mid jan.

  • Thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks, I will purchase a return ticket for my trip in February!

  • +1

any tightass options for Avalon to Melbourne?

  • -2

Not a bargain when you can get a train to Broadmeadows and the 901 to Melbourne Airport.

    • -1

      Takes a lot longer though.

  • lovely, a cost of $5.40 because I was prepared and got my tickets last week, rather than waiting for a special and get them today

  • Thanks Op! Saved $5.40, ticket validity 22 March, ideal for a trip planned early same month…

  • +1

I'm too lazy to post a deal but in my research I found a code for 10% off Melbourne Airport Parking for Jan/Feb next year: http://www.nmfc.com.au/news/2017-12-19/north-announces-map-p…

    Get onto it TA

  • No reason to shorten expiry. Assholes

  • Urgh. Used to be able to purchase through Jetstar website for 12 months expiry. Guess that's forever gone now…

  • Great timing, going melbourne 2nd Jan so this is better than nothing :)

  • I have a ticket I haven't used from the last deal and it expires tomorrow! Anybody who wants it please message me and I'll send it through

  • Thanks OP. Saved $10.80 on two return tickets. I find Skybus quick and easy when visiting Melbourne.

  • Side Note: Has anyone tried catching Taxify from Airport to Melb City?

  • Just tried the code and said that it was invalid. Is it just me?

    • I just bought 2 tickets and the code works ok.

      • Thanks! I just tried the code again and successfully bought one ticket!

  • Is anyone having any issues buying the tickets through their phone, it tells me to complete the form to proceed to payment page, even though I have completed the form..

  • Thanks mate, return for the Mrs and I in Jan for just over $60, cheaper than an uber
