  • Any perks?
Coles Mastercard offers 6 months insurance and 2 years price protection, no international fees

Looks to be posted for 24mth balance transfer. Bankwest platinum is free and has insurance and no international fees but no rewards.

    • Coles MC have failed to do a balance transfer for me for over a month now. Been stuck between customer service and back office. No amount of calls, escalations have helped. $99 fees paid not worth it. Go elsewhere. Just sharing my experience. Share if you have similar experience?

      • That sucks
I've had probably 600 paid in price protection and merchandise protection since april

Same experience here. Their call centre in India is hopeless. Endless empty promise and never actioned on my request (a simple request for supplementary card). They never seem to do anything there and I even lodged complain to Liberty Finance (the company manages Coles MC) still hear nothing. This is one of the worst financial service company I had dealt so far.

        • Sorry to hear that and totally agree, as hopeless and shameful as can be

  • Purchase rate (p.a.) 12.74% p.a.

  • Thanks aaruu. Sadly, no sign on bonus is not worth the credit check. What’s a purchase rate anyway?

    • Aside from the annual fee it's the next most important number. It's how much interest they'll charge you on any purchases you make if you haven't paid the balance in full by the due date. 12.74 isn't too bad.

      • In T&C, it states "The applicable variable cash advance rate will apply to balance(s) transferred but left unpaid at the end of the promotional period" which currently is 21.49% p.a. (ouch!) It's not the purchase rate. Purchase rate on its own is quite good though. 24 months could be a fair enough time to plan to pay a balance transfer off or save enough & transfer to another card in true ozbargain spirit :)

      • Thanks enzso. I hadn't paid attention to that as I always pay off in full.

  • for anyone considering switching, my experience is in this thread:

FWIW i applied for a st george balance transfer card earlier in the year, similar deal to this. my experience was pretty painless. i have been a westpac customer in the past so they didn't need ID, and the card was posted to my home address. i had the BT cash advanced to another credit card within two weeks of applying and have used it to buy a used car. worked out really well.

  • 24 balance transfer is good, but $99 fee for second year kills it for me…

what are you using the balance transfer for?

even if to BT $10k and put it on your mortgage, you will save around $400pa (using 4% rate). Less the $99annual fee you are still in front.

if you are BT a credit card balance its even better.

      • Yep, you will still make good money, but i guess losing $99 from your $800 savings over he 2 year period may not be worth it for all. Agreed, anyone that has a credit card balance is nuts if they are eligible for a balance transfer and havent utlised it!

      • Agree, I use my card limits very well when it comes to 0% balance transfers. I usually get the retentions team to waive off the BT fee, do free BTs and save interest via transfers into my offset account eventually. As a result of interest savings, I recover ALL fees associated with my accounts, and make a decent saving as well. Win-Win!

        • Sorry I couldn't follow, could you dumb it down plz?

@rob359: Hey Rob, what I meant was usually banks are reluctant to waive the usual 2% or 3% Balance Transfer (BT) fee attached to a Balance Transfer. What I do in easy points below :)
          1) I call the customer service & request to be transferred to closures/ card retention team, you just need to say you're getting a better deal elsewhere & are considering leaving your bank. They have discretion to waive off the BT fee and even offer special interest rates. E.g. I called ANZ card retentions team, got my 2% BT fee waived and got 0.00% for 24 months BT offer even being an existing customer, without applying for new card.
          2) Then I got that BT transferred into another non-ANZ credit card which had zero balance (i.e. full limit available) putting it into credit. E.g. card limit was $5,000, but I got another $15,000 from ANZ transferred into it, making the balance $20,000 in total, $15,000 of my extra money in it, more than the credit limit.
          3) Then I transfer that extra credit amount into my mortgage offset account (can be done via online banking, atm/ over counter withdrawals). Most banks don't charge any cash advance fee for taking any credit amounts out from credit card. Just do the credit withdrawal a day after deposit to be on safe side as some cards require the credit to be processed which usually happens overnight on a working day. That way I save e.g. 4.00% (home loan interest rate) on this $15,000 off my home loan for 24 months (BT transfer period).
          4) Money saved from home loan kind of pays all my fees for credit card annual fees, loans fees etc. This way I recover any bank fees equivalent I pay and always end up saving more than I pay.

Hope the above makes sense, Cheers! :)

@rob359: Ha ha, haven't paid any bank fee from past 11 years since the time I realised I can make the banks pay it for me, royal treatment :)

        • I'm with suncorp and they've advised that I'd still get charged cash advacned even if my cc is in positive credit,
what banks if any of you've tried, that does not charge cash advance fees when withdrawing from CC?
If you are willing to share, plz pm :P

@tenshi13: I've used these three in the past with no cash advance fee on the positive credit amount on credit card - ANZ, NAB, WESTPAC, GO MASTERCARD (GE). I'd recommend to read the PDS for accurate & current info.

        • @aaruu:
So guys i was going to sign up to this. I wont be charged if I transfer the funds to my debit account? Thanksin advance

        • @belesci: Initial balance transfer is to a credit card only. Funds to reach to your debit account would need an extra step to put your another credit card in credit. Please refer to my detailed message above on the process I follow. Good luck!!

        • @aaruu: thanks @aaruu ive got a credit card and will do a balance transfer. My limit is 20k with the old one. Do i just transfer that one across and ready to go or need to do something else before that πŸ˜…

        • @belesci: My understanding is (in simple money terms):
          1) St. George will put money into your existing credit card putting it into credit i.e. your existing card's $20K limit + St. George's transfer amount e.g. $10K. Your existing card will show total available balance of $30K ($20K existing limit + $10K new transfer) then.
          2) You will transfer only the credit amount ($10K newly transferred by St. George) out from existing $20K limit card into your debit account. Your balance will reduce from $30K, back to your credit limit of $20K.
          3) I would recommend transfer the credit amount a day after it has reached your existing credit card to avoid potential issues if your bank takes a working day (overnight) to process credits. Play safe!

Hope the above makes sense. That is what I hope you intend to do as that's what I do with my balance transfer playoffs.

          Good Luck!! :)
