  • Does anyone know if this works using a BP Fuel Card?

    • +1

BP Fuel Card is just your payment method right? I don't see why not, as long as you activate the offer and can swipe your Velocity card.

In case anyone is going to ask, no this doesn't work with BPMe App

    • yeah one of the complains about the BPMe app. Also not all private owned BP station have these functionality.

    • which is a real shame, especially with the amex offer around

      • Same. Was going to use the BPMe app but no Velocity support is a dealbreaker. I continue to pay for my fuel the old fashioned way!

        • I just used it to get my Amex credits across my cards. Thanks goodness for the $20 button on the pump so I could easily hit the target.

        • @danielh: I would only miss out on 26 velocity points so I might as well do it. I have 1 more week to use it.

  • I received this offer but it will not motivate me to buy my fuel from BP.

I consider 1 velocity point to be equal to 1 cent. Isn't this just BP offering the same level of discount as Shell/Coles and Woolworths/Caltex?

I buy my fuel from Costco which is usually 10 - 15 cents cheaper than BP, Shell & Caltex.

while it is right to value a velocity point as being worth ~1c, this doesn't tell the full story, as you cannot actually buy velocity points for 1c/p.

in this regard, it is probably worth slightly more than 1c per point to build a Velocity points balance that can be used on discounted class upgrades for flights, or, as i tend to use them, to book last minute domestic flights when their dollar price skyrockets in the days before departure (often flights to adelaide from melbourne can be $200+ if booked late, but will still only cost 7,800 points + ~$25 in taxes).

  • Would these specifically work on the Amex velocity card?

    • +1

You can pay with your Amex Velocity card - but you still need to swipe your Velocity Rewards card (the Visa GlobalWallet one) if you want these points.

      • Wait seriously? I never got one? I just got a single, red card?

        This thing.

(It's scanned into my phone now for Android pay, but sadly my local BP doesn't do Android pay)

        • That's an American Express credit card. The velocity rewards card that BeauGiles is referring to is issued by Virgin/Velocity as your 'membership' card or something - it also functions as a Visa.. I forget the specifics

        • The 'Velocity Frequent Flyer' card looks like this - http://ww1.prweb.com/prfiles/2013/07/26/11385695/GlobalWalle…. It's your membership card, and you swipe it at BP to earn the points direct via Virgin (it also functions as a prepaid Visa card if you're into that sort of thing)

Your card (the one you linked) is an American Express card that earns Velocity points on your spend.

You can combine both cards - swipe your Velocity Frequent Flyer card first - https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/apps/velocity/minisite… and you'll earn 2 Velocity Points per litre and 2 Velocity Points per $1 spent in-store at BP.

Then when you pay with your Amex, you'll get an extra 1pt per dollar spent on the amex.

If you've only been swiping your red Amex, you've only been getting 1pt/$1 at BP - as your Velocity Frequent Flyer details don't 'flow' through to BPs systems for the extra points.
If that's the case - quick ,grab a temporary card from BP to use, and request a new Velocity membership card to earn the points in the meantime.

There's a bit more info on the BP + Velocity partnership card at http://bp.velocityfrequentflyer.com

        • @BeauGiles:
"You might know this feeling: your car's running low on petrol so you pull up at a BP service station and fill the tank, only to realise you don't have your Virgin Australia Velocity frequent flyer card handy.

That's an easy serve of Velocity points down the drain, at a rate of two points per litre.

Happily, those points can still be yours if you grab a temporary Velocity card from the servo's checkout.
These work not only as short-term membership cards for newcomers to Virgin Australia's frequent flyer program – they can also funnel those just-earned points into your current membership account."

        • @BeauGiles: Don't you need a Velocity membership in order to get a Velocity Escape? My Velocity Escape AMEX as my membership number on it underneath my name

        • @kerfuffle: You'll need one as that's where the points go yes - but you also need the Velocity membership card on it's own to collect these 'extra' points from places like BP.

        • @BeauGiles: I had that before I had the Velocity Escape 👍

        • @aragornelessar: That sounds frustrating, can I add it to Android Pay? Thanks for replying. I figured the points were just part of the card? Quite confusing.

        • @BeauGiles: Thanks for the informative, if confusing replies, quite complicated.
To clarify, if I apply for the other card you mention, is that effectively /another/ credit card in my name? Does it tie to my Amex in any way?

Finally, if I do go through the rigmarole of applying for it, would it be able to be added to Android Pay, so I need not carry the darn thing?

        • +1

          @hamwhisperer:

can I add it to Android Pay?

It looks like you can… BUT it doesn't work at BP according to this post. https://pointyendoftheplane.com/velocity-now-has-digital-car…

Basically, this is my process at BP.

          1. Fill up, then go in and pay.
          2. Swipe Velocity membership card to get Velocity points directly via BP/Velocity relationship.
          3. Swipe and PAY with Amex card - I get Amex rewards points which I can convert to Velocity points. In your case, you'd get velocity points directly through Amex.

I believe that means you'd pretty much double dip and get credited Velocity points twice.

To clarify, the Velocity Membership card can either look like
          A - http://biztravelguru.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Virgin-A…
          B - http://milesdownunder.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/VAcards…

A is not actually a Visa credit card - it's your Velocity membership with a prepaid Visa card. ie you need to load up money on it before using. Check this link for more info:
          https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/ProgramBenefit….

Otherwise you can just request card B if you haven't got one lying around (I lost my B looking card so I requested an A looking card, just in case I might need/have use for it).
