Finally, a Chinese knockoff of a Merkur Futur. Just what the market has been crying out for.

    • +2

I haven't cried, had the knock off for 6 months ….. same as the real deal.

I've gone back to DE razors 6 months ago as all good oz bargainers should to save money ….. male or female …..

gillette can stuff their overpriced cartridges ……

  • Razor might be usable but I'd invest in some decent blades for it.

  • +1

I love shaving with a safety razor,i believe they're cheaper in the long run and provide excellent results, there's a bit of a learning curve but once i got the technique sorted I haven't gone back. Blades are cheap and the razor doesn't get clogged up.

    • Blades are cheap

Where do you buy them from?

      • you can buy packs off ebay.
I'm lucky to have a beauty supply shop nearby, i just buy them there.

you'll never go back to disposables.

      • i get them from The Shaver Shop. Not ultra cheap but last forever in my use case.

I use Feather. These things are ULTRA sharp…if you're just starting out, don't buy these!!

        https://www.shavershop.com.au/feather/double-edge-5-pack-008…

I bought 5 early this year and I'm on my second one (half went in my cut throat and one in my Merkur Solingen). Both still so sharp, that I haven't noticed a difference since new.

        • I used to use these, but due to lack of supplies, I stopped using and started using disposable razors. I want to give these a try.

        • hastagFeatherSupremecyCrew

I paid about $55 for a 200 pack about two years ago. Seems like they are up to the $60s now… that's more than 8 Gillete Supermachproglide blades! It's over boys, pack it up.

        • +1

I actually used these on my first De shave despite numerous forums suggesting not to. Nothing cuts better than feather… Skin or hair.

      • +3

Mensbiz have the Astra superior (green in 100 packs) for $15 free shipping if you send over $20. I bought a sample pack contains five brands when I first tried the after razor and these were my favourite.

      • +2

ebay …. 100 quality blades for $30, and if you are really tight, some have numbered edges so you can rotate the blade and get 4 times the life out of them …..

      • I use the green pack Derby's go to tryablade or I suggest buying a sample pack first to find what works for you.

    • +1

yep started on safety razor 2 weeks ago. much better shave in certain areas, but i still use a gillette to tidy up. i havent got the best blades, so after about 2 weeks i start to doubt it. Technique is everything.

  • +2

they're a clone of the Merkur Futur and great razors for the price.
however, as a deal not too good, as they're US$6.19 at Aliexpress

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/MINGSHI-Full-Zinc-Alloy-Safe…

    • zinc alloy vs carbon steel.

do you know which is more rust resistant?

      • +1

merkur is also zinc cast ….. zinc is cheap, move up to brass which costs more and stainless razors are the pinnacle.

      • +1

        zinc alloy vs carbon steel.

The 'carbon steel' bit refers to the blades they throw in (probably incorrectly, if I had to guess). It's a dodgy Chinglish listing.

    • As I said I couldn't find anything local cheaper. Your atleast a good chance to get before Xmas with my deal.

    • +1

So is the aliexpress one the better option if you don't mind waiting for postage?

      • Would also like to know the answer to this!

        • +1

It's the same thing just cheaper

  • You've done it again OzB, I've found something I never realised I needed. Getting a better shave with the ability to buy 100 razors for $15 seems like a no brainer?!

    • +5

wait till you get the $5 shave soap stick that lasts 6 months …. you will have cash saved to buy all those amazon.au bargains that are mis-priced and get cancelled.

Gillette and canned shaved cream have been ripping people off for years … they moved to proprietary cartridges as they didn't want to compete in DE blade market which is a standardised size and no patents and you can only compete on quality and price ….. not system.

      • Can you recommend any particular sticks. I've been interested for a while in switching from disposal blades and shaving cream in a can. I'm guessing with the stick you want a decent brush as well?

        • +1

Gillette stick can be had for like 4 bucks on chemists. After trying hundreds of soaps and gels I find hair conditioner is the best shaving cream. Glides so easy and softens the hair.

          Prorasso also make good products.

        • +1

Palmolive one is super cheap and lasts ages, get a natural hair brush, the plastic ones don't whip the soap up as well

        • Thanks for the replies. I guess you'd just go a big n cheap hair conditioner to make it worthwhile. I've also read that badger hair is the best for a shaving brush.

        • My favourite these days is Tabac shave stick. Admittedly not $5, but still damn good value considering how long it lasts and it provides a good lather along with smelling pretty good.

    "10 replaceable carbon steel blades"
Most of my and earlier generations moved on to stainless steel in 1965 when Wilkinson Sword decided to use it.

    This site will be useful:
    https://www.wikihow.com/Sharpen-Old-Razor-Blades

    • haven't seem carbon blades in 40 years ….. all are stainless now.

      • Hmm, you prompted me to go look. They have stainless on them, but stated as "carbon steel" in the description. Probably a bit of ambiguity owing to translation from the Chinese - in my experience in the metal-work trade "carbon steel" was used to differentiate from nickel/chrome stainless and tool steels and came as "mild" [low carbon] or high tensile [high carbon].
They could also be pointing out they're "carbon steel" for those of us who have been burnt with the honestly described "Stainless China".

      • -1

        carbon blades

        Are these responsible for Blackface?

  • +2

I've got the Merkur Futur and would recommend something else for someone starting off with DE razors, it is certainly more aggressive compared to the standard recommendations like the Merkur 34C HD.

Even with the Futur set to 1 is it more aggressive than the 34C, the added weight of the Futur is also a factor.

Just something to note for beginners.

    • +1

Same. At any point, I could easily rip chunks of skin off. And I don't really enjoy using it. My favourite is the plastic feather brand DE razor.

  • Grabbed one as my Step-dad ninja'd my 34C :P

  • Found it cheaper on eBay ($9.99): https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/322658617620 - though I can't vouch for the seller personally

    • Again I stated local stock, yours is from China…

      • Yeah, but your Amazon link shows as $17.80 for me and says "Get it as soon as Wednesday, January 10 when you choose Standard Delivery at checkout." so it would be both cheaper and quicker to get from overseas! Yay for Amazon Australia!

Probably just as well, don't really need another razor.

        • Fair enough, idk why it's more for you? If that's the case though Ali express link further up for $6.
