  • $28.5 after 5%.

Man, wish telstra hasn't cancelled carrier billing.

  • That's an incredibly shit phone, but I guess it's good if you need something disposable. Is it locked? It seems to have B28, so it might make a good phone for when you're in the boonies and need to make a call, or setup a wifi hotspot.

Can unlock for a few $ on ebay

      That's an incredibly shit phone.

Of course it is, look at the price. This is great for old people, kids or a backup phone/hotspot. It isn't suppose to replace your iPhone or flagship Android.
You can get like 20 of these for the price of one iPhone X.

      • I'm aware, that's why I said that it might be good for a disposable or a hotspot.

    Great deal OP!

Assuming the $30 recharge's value is $30, you are essentially getting a free phone. No it's not great. But it makes calls, sends messages and browses the web.

Note: The $30 recharge value is mostly suited to older people or kids with the first phone. Might see if my gran wants a new phone, they are currently on the $29 Tempo lol.

    • Er, no.
      A $30 initial charge is worth about $5 or $10 normally. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/342069

You pay $50+$30, and get a $50 gift card back.
So $30 net plus jumping through hoops.

So yes, a cheap phone with usable 1GB and Android 6.
Use it for kids games, a backup device, bomb detonator, spy camera, tracking device, mp3 player …

      • A $30 initial recharge is worth about $5 or $10 normally.

While that is true, I'll point out a few things.
        a) You can have both the $30 recharge (for $30) and the starter sim for $5 yeah? Use the starter sim first, then activate the sim in box (note this is important to do - states in the terms of the eftpos promo) and recharge $30. Hence you get a $99 phone with $60 worth of recharge and a $50 eftpos card for the total sum of $84.50
        b) Using the $5 starter packs isn't exactly error free, but if you do activate successfully then that adds to the deal.
        c) A lot of people (not OzBargainers) will not think it's worth it seeing as you have to activate the included sim - so therefore they will value it at face value - $30.

I prefer my reasoning of $99 phone + $60 recharge + $50 eftpos card = $209 value for $84.50. You can save a further $2.48 on the phone using 5% off wish gift cards. Not sure if this works for phone credit, but if it does there is a further saving of $1.50.

That in my opinion is an awesome deal. But not an awesome phone.

Bought it during the Auspost sale for the sole use of making calls and sending occasional texts. Tried using it for a few days and now its collecting dust in the garage and sim is back in my good old cheapie Lumia 532.
I don't use any apps and still this is a seriously terrible phone. Takes forever just to boot up and making basic calls and sending texts is a huge effort. Plugging in for the entire night does't fully charge this waste of matter but it sure drains after a couple hours unplugged. Microphone and speakers are useless and very hard to get the message across. Randomly turns itself off and the battery goes from 60% to 40% to 20% to off within a matter of minutes. Not worth the time. This is the second Alcatel I've ever bought unknowingly in a rush and both didn't fail to disappoint. Would've thought it was a lemon but both have had the same issues and equally terrible. Not a coincidence.

I did not have high hopes and expectations of buying a "smart phone" when I bought this. But failing to perform basic calling functions a phone should be able to is pathetic. Good for a gift for someone you'd like to frustrate.

Same, bought this phone to use for 7-Eleven fuel lock app and at least it does the job, gps lock up lags a bit so it does the trick. Other than that this phone sucks, battery drain quickly, boot up and app loading takes forever.

      You saved my money mate.

  • bought this today after seeing the catalogue… should be an alright backup phone.

I was wondering if you could get the current offer of the $30 sim for $5 and activate that instead of recharging $30 with real money.

    • That probably wouldn't work, there is a 'control number' on the outer boxed packaging of the phone which matches the 'control number' on the sim card inside, so they can probably track the serial number. I ended up buying the recharge from Woolworths with 'Woolworths dollars' I had saved up on my rewards card.
Let us know what happens if you try it though!

    Got one as toy, backup.

    It is an Alcatel U5 5044T, MediaTek MT6737M .
Display is surprisingly acceptable, considering the price and low pixel count.

  • When it say's new customer, do they mean a new service, or a completely new individual?

    • Fine print says "excludes handset upgrades and sim swaps". Also mis-spells "Andriod" :)

I would create a new account, with either a new number, or ported from non-Optus network.

The main thing is to activate the included SIM and $30+ on the first rechagrge, before 4/2/18.

I can't imagine they will exclude past customers. That'd be nearly everyone over 25.

      • reply to self: I forgot about the formal ID process in activation.
Possible they exclude anyone with an active optus account?

  • I activated my eftpos card a week ago and just noticed today when I went to use it that no money was added to the card. Just emailed optus now. And yes I recharged $30. Any one else had this trouble?

    • Sorry to hear it, I had no trouble activating mine.
Hopefully Optus will be able to sort it out for you.

Their email back says some sort of processing error and they tried to ring me, which I believe, but I didn't answer as this sim was being used for data/outgoing calls so I thought it was telemarketer ringing me. Sending a photo of the card to them now and I believe it will be sorted out soon.

Problem solved: $50 is now showing on eftpos
