Wow… Good deal for an gtx 10170 laptop ! Now i regret my previous purchase (dell xps 15), going from 17 to 15 inch just feels bad

  • +2

Wow. Thanks. Bought it straight away.
I was so excited that I've forgotten to add the extra warranty ☹️

  • +3

    Thank you, bought!
Seems the previous HP Omen deals weren't remotely close to this combo.

  • +3

    Better than the Alienware deal

  • +1

Their monitor is still grossly overpriced. Damn

  • I'm not sure if it has USB-C (I think it doesn't).

But apparently it comes with a USB DVDRW? Lol.

    Box contents
What's in the box HDMI to VGA adapter
    USB External DVDRW

    • +3

Why lol? Would you prefer a built-in DVD-RW taking up space/weight?

      • +2

Hmmmm I think I'm being misinterpreted. I meant that, how lovely, it comes with a free DVDRW on top of it being a good deal.

        • And that's funny because…?

        • @MrZ: Because not only is it an absolutely excellent deal, it also comes with a DVD-RW external. Like a little Cherry on top of the existing Cherry on top.

        • @misterpotatomato:

I get that, but is such a thing worthy of a "lol" ?

        • @MrZ: when you extrapolate the worthiness of the deal in line with the price of a laptop usually it becomes worthy of a lol.

In other words, this conversation is going nowhere.

  • At 2.1k, wouldn't a desktop be better?

    • +6

Desktops price vs performance will always be the more better pick, however for some people including myself, the portability factor will always win out. It just depends on the needs of the individual and if they are willing to pay the extra for the portability imo.

      • -7

Could you justify the portability on a 4kg laptop?

        • +11

The ability to fit it inside of a backpack/satchel bag. Yes, they can be heavy (some more than others), but they do serve a purpose for some users.
As someone who works night shift, I'm "able" to take my laptop to work and play games some nights. I wouldn't be able to do that if I had to take a desktop.
Being portable doesn't always mean thin and lightweight.

        • -1

          @Camm90:
          Fair enough.

        • +4

4kg isn't that heavy in reality. Go to gym and not be lazy.

        • +1

I still the remember the good old days bring a 4kg laptop and 1kg power brick and a few heavy textbooks to uni! Makes me feel secure for sure XD

        • -1

          @GregRust:
You're not carrying just the laptop.

    • Not really for a brand name. Here's the way overpriced Dell with similar specs.

      http://www.dell.com/au/p/alienware-aurora-r7-desktop/pd?oc=a…

You can grab an Mwave elcheapo for a bit less, but add a monitor and keyboard and you're pretty close.

      https://www.mwave.com.au/product/mwave-px20i-gaming-pc-gtx-1…

So, I'm all over the laptops these days.

      • Not sure which similar specs you're referring to but the desktop will undoubtedly destroy the hp laptop.

        • Sure the 'Alienware' CPU will be much faster with apps that will use 6 threads but otherwise this desktop is lacking - it doesn't include an unlocked CPU or an SSD and only has 8GB of RAM. How can they call it Alienware! The price is nearly double this laptop ($3870) once the options are changed to match better. The GPU in each system is very similar so the desktop will only win easily if you tried using the laptop outside on a hot day.

        • Other than the CPU, which, yes would be the only thing to win, the laptop wins hands down. That's a ludicrous price to add an SSD and then stick on a monitor (but that's mainly Alienware BS).

I just don't agree that you pay a premium for laptop anymore. I used to, especially with the downgrade of GFX card, but nvidia have come to the party and the versatility of taking your machine with you vs the ability to run a better CPU just doesn't cut it.

You still CAN pay a lot more for laptops. if I want 3x M.2s and 2x HDDs in my laptop and 2 GFX cards, I'll need to splash out for a $6,000 laptop. Then I'm paying way more than chucking a bunch of components into a desktop.

        • +1

@device host: >it doesn't include an unlocked CPU

Why would you want an unlocked CPU on a laptop when power consumption goes up exponentiallywith speed increases? The better choice would have been a locked i5.

        • @Diji1: I don't want to overclock a laptop but it's an advantage of using a desktop instead.

  • These will sell out

  • +3

Please keep in mind this is the 2016 variant. The 2017 variant model name is Omen 17-an0xx.

    • +3

But it's good deal for GTX1070. no matter the 2016 or 2017 model.

  • +2

Thanks, I snapped this right up. If I clicked harder my hand would have gone through the desk!

  • Dream PC since I think a laptop with a GTX 1080 in it costs like a GTX 1080ti price wise more which is kind of ridiculous.

  • Finally, a decent gaming laptop with a BIG screen, not a puny 15.6" screen from a $400 Celeron.

    • Got a similarly specd Acer Predator from one of the ebay sales a fee months ago for $1700. Deal was on Ozb. Some will rubbish the Acer brand but I have had good luck

  • +2

My past experience with HP laptops with high specs (HP Omen with 6700HQ and HP Pavilion 15 Gaming with 6700HQ) is that their screens are pretty bad. They are IPS so viewing angles are decent but that's the only good thing about them. Colors are ridiculously bad, contrast is a joke. When I compared with my wife's Asus Ultrabook the difference in Colors and contrast was so obvious. I simply couldn't live with both of those laptops. Read reviews and they all mention this issue (I still went ahead and bought thinking reviewers must have got lemons.. lol).
Hopefully HP may have fixed this in later generations. On the plus side you will be pleasantly surprised to find an empty m.2 nvme slot inside in case if you want to increase booting speed further.

    • +1

This is a good point to mention, always check the screen specs closely before buying a gaming laptop as some of them are just bad. This one is OK thanks to GSync. Have a look at this review which compares the 2016 to 2017 model.
      Key points about screen:
      - The refresh rate is 'unsatisfactory' for gamers (B>W 30.4ms) but the 120Hz G-Sync makes it run smooth.
      - The screen refresh rate is 20% better on this model (2016)
      - The color coverage (sRGB) is 10% better on the 2017 model.
Laptop screens generally improve over time but often there is a lot of variation between models (and sometimes the LCD panel can even change on the same laptop when supplies run short). I'd imagine that the manufacturer asks suppliers for a screen that does 120Hz Gsync but then doesn't pay too much attention to the other specs. I wouldn't assume reviewers are getting lemons (to rationalise your purchase haha) unless one review varies a lot from the rest - The better reviews will state the model of the panel in the laptop they reviewed. If you need something to rationalise your purchase, compare specs to models you can actually find for similar prices - Nothing I could find (with 17" screen) comes close to this laptop without spending at least another $600. Here is the best I could find close to this price (which is actually a good bargain! but not an EPIC bargain like this).

  • Great deal

  • website getting hammered now…

  • +1

Damn 17” that’s huge carting around a portable desktop 😝

  • Out of stock in Australia, but still shipping from overseas.

    • Hey how did you find this out? I'm having trouble with their order tracking. +1 on this deal!

      • It changed from 'in stock' to 'ships in N days'. They may not process the order until more stock arrives so the status might stay blank for a number of days.

  • +3

Couldn't help myself here, too good a deal to pass up, I nearly bought a metabox Prime-S PA70HS-G, but glad i didn't because if i modify the meta's specs to match this one, it comes up to a princely $3241 (samsung pm960, 2 year warranty, 16gb ram, external drive, windows 10 home, no extra hdd, intel 8265 wifi)

I was very interested to find out what hard drive was in it, apparently its a samsung pm961, which i was looking at buying earlier this year because it had insane speeds at the time - im sure it's excellent and its better than what was in the metabox one.

The wifi is a an Intel AC 7265NGW - basically gives up to 867Mbps. There are upgrades to this like the metabox's intel AC 8265 (with bluetooth 5), but I'm sure this will do for most of us.

I'm almost certain the monitor will be a gysnc one, even thought they didn't write on the specs sheet. Here is the part number for it "GNRC 17.3 INCH PANEL FHDAGUWVA300eDPflatGsyncDDGF - for 1.1 SuperPower use Mfg SA#"

Next question is, if I regret getting the 60hz screen and i'm feeling lucky will I be able to just swap in the 120hz part for the panel?

If anyone is interested in the specifics of some of the dumbed down specs, here's hp's parts list for it:
    http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=1DF50PA

Also, check if your work will let you salary sacrifice this, it might get you an extra couple of hundred back. For me it should be between $400-$500 extra back, plus salary sacrifice on any accessories or upgrades (possibly the only real perk we get). I'm a dev, so looking forward to seeing visual studio running at a decent speed on this and cranking the settings up on a few games that I'm playing.

    • +1

To answer my own question. No i cannot upgrade the lcd panel, the UHD 120hz one is a 40pin edp and the FHD 60hz is a 30pin edp connector. Guess I'll just have to get a 4k tv if I want to start living large.

      • +1

mate, im impressed by your research!
        Thank you, bro.

  • I see that the models below it have a 1TB sata drive. Do these allow a sata drive to be added also? Or is there no space except for a single m2 ssd?

    • +2

The specs say there is 1x M.2 slot and 1x 2.5" bay and the SSD is in the M.2 slot so that leaves a 2.5" bay free (used for 1/2TB SATA drives like you saw). It looks like there is no easy access to either drives so the whole bottom cover needs removing - A job that requires experience.

  • So nowadays mobile gpus are identical to desktop gpus? why is it 1070 but not 1070m, are they the same and have the same performance? i don't believe this since desktop video cards have those gigantic 2, 3 fans spinning.

  • Wish was the newer model, then probably can price match, however the feedback suggests the pc constantly froze after 3 months of use

  • +1

As a reseller - my BUY price for this unit was $2531.16 when they were in stock EX TAX. So $2784.28 for me to stock.

So can absolutely verify this is a genuine bargain guys grab it while you can.

  • Went to JB, they had a few Omen laptops on display
Price and specs wise, while the one below can't match this Deal, I was surprised the chassis (wrist area) was metal
    This SOB was ice cold

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/omen/hp-…

  • Also FYI - Looks like 16GB is MAXIMUM RAM so don't buy if you might want more.

  • is there any review of this exact model? i'd would like to check some temps but i can't find any of the 233tx model

  • I want to hold out another week and see if Amex has a cash back or something for this

  • If anyone was worried about the usb 3.1 gen1 ports and no type c connectors, fear not! There is compact adaptor that gives basically the same functionality. I just wish I could locate a cheaper option. They seem to be a little hard to find and this is the most compact one I've seen.

    https://www.amazon.com/Acessorz-Hi-speed-Connector-Converter…

https://www.banggood.com/USB-3_0-A-Male-to-USB-3_1-Type-C-Fe… - out of stock but even more compact

  • Anyone checked the delivery estimate given on the confirmation email?
Mine says planned ship date 19/12/2017

This conflicts with info on their store
"If item is in stock, expect delivery in 2-4 working days"
    http://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/Offer.aspx?p=…

They only changed ETA to '15 business days' few days after Deal was posted

  • they told me out of stock - not sure if its an elaborate buy strategy

    • Are they giving refunds now?

      • not sure yet, will wait and see. I mean the chat rep said out of stock

        • I received a phone call from HP saying the model i ordered was out of stock and discontinued so they are going to give me the 2017 model at the same price!
The only problem is that i have to wait until end of December or the second week of January 2018! Hell yeah, i am happy to wait!

        • @inusure:

lol if this is true they are suddenly going to get a shit ton of orders hahaha

          lets see what I get

  • One thing the chat reps said this is a refurbished model ?? does that mean second hand

    • I could only imagine the monitor, video card and motherboard being 2nd hand.
I'd dare say they would have to replace everything else at factory level.
I don't think it's much of an upgrade to a refurb 2017 model, personally I probably wouldn't accept the deal.

    • Hey, did the rep suggest they'll give you the 2017 model for free, but it will be refurbished and not new - hence the long wait till January?

cause I'd hesitate to get an upgrade to a refurb unit

      • Got the same email. Asked for a refund instead.

        • I spoke to another chat rep and they said no refurbished models.. so now I'm confused.

        • Damn I don't want your one I want 2017 model haha

  • I would have thought they would need to decide if it's refurbished

  • +1

Been contacted as well. Confirmed with Rep that the substitute will be brand new. ETA end of Dec to mid Jan

  • +1

OH MY GOD I LOVE YOU GUYS!!

I was checking everyday waiting for an amex cashback deal…. found out that there were 16 in stock then an hour later all gone… but they didnt close the item off the site yet.

Decided to pull the plug and see…

Got a call today saying they will upgrade it at no charge. OH MY GOD

Just need to wait an extra month (by end dec or 2nd week of jan)

  • Hey,

I received my new laptop yesterday afternoon, however the HDMI to VGA adapter is missing and the External USB DVDRW drive.

I've contacted hp and here is their reply:

    Hi Steve,

    Good day.

Kindly check attached file for a copy of your invoice. I also sent a copy of this email to [email protected].

Regarding with the item that you said was missing, we apologize but those items are not really included on the product that you bought from our online store.

I understand that these items were posted as inclusion on the item you bought however there was an error from our online store. The items below does not include with HP Omen 17-w233tx laptop.

    1x HDMI to VGA adapter
    1x USB External DVDRW

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and error that happened on our website.

    Sincerely,

    Karen Joy Francisco
    Customer Service Representative

    • What a joke

    • +1

Isn't this a breach of contract under tort law?

It may well have been a mistake, however they can't just say something is included with the laptop, take the money, and ship an incomplete item.

      • Ask for a discount maybe?

    • When did you order? I ordered 1/12 and was told out of stock. The rep said this while the online page still says 'available in 15 biz days'

      • I ordered on the 2/12, so they must have pulled stock from somewhere. The box has ingram micro on the side.

        • ingram micro?

        • @Wish: I think they're like a massive distributor in the asia pacific region.

  • ps its definitely new stock,

  • For anyone who wants to upgrade the wifi and bluetooth to BT 5.0, intel just released the 9560 ngff wifi adapter - it only passed fcc regulation in july.
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Intel-Dual-Band-Wireless…

p.s - I know the link says AC-7260, but the description and photo's say 9560 throughout. Its about $35 aud

Also, some of you may have discovered the situation with adding an extra drive, basically you need to buy a specific ribbon cable and bracket, they're each about $80-90. So I figure it can't be the only option, surely they don't mix up the wire configurations between the usb headers every time they make a laptop, so I found this and it was much much cheaper, it has the same number of metal tabs on the end, I presume its the same size given the laptop it was for was also a 2016 model. Anyway, I'm willing to bet my laptop on it. I'll repost the results when i get it.
    https://www.banggood.com/HDD-Cable-Hard-Disk-Connector-with-…

  • Was anyone else missing their HDMI to VGA adapter and External USB DVDRW drive by chance?

  • I ordered on 2/12 and on the tracking page it has my order as "cancelled" without a cancellation date. Money is out of my account… I think I need to contact HP.

    • 48hrs+ and no response from support, purchase still listed as canceled. Anyone else having problems with HP?

      • I don't think they work on weekends.

        • Turns out they reversed the money from my debit card, which showed on my transactions as leaving my account a few days ago but no longer appears at all. I now have to wait for them to give me DD details. What a pain in the ass this has been.

        • @moist: I got a call from HP today offering a free upgrade to the latest model and 32gb ram, ended up paying using DD. Overall pretty happy now :).

        • @moist: Probably didn't have as much trouble as you with the chat reps, but I only got an upgrade to a newer model (still 16GB)… the AN062tx. Perhaps I should ask for more RAM?

  • Anyone else going to claim TRs on this?

I'm thinking to ask for a new receipt later as it's based on the day of purchase so may be a little tight if it takes 40 days to arrive

  • +3

    Hey,

Just got a call from HP telling me they are sending the external usb dvdrw burner and a usb to hdmi adapter (instead of hdmi to vga). I had to make about 4-5 calls and bring up their responsibilities under Australian Consumer Law to deliver as advertised, but they eventually caved.

I would recommend that anyone who bought this laptop who hasn't received the full set of items included give this a shot. I can post a copy of the original ad if anyone else needs it.

    Cheers

    • Hi scuba12steve. Can you please upload a link of your screenshot for the benefit of the others who ordered and have not received. I'll update the post as well with the link you have. Thanks.

      • Hi,

I tried doing it a few times earlier today but onedrive seemed to be down. Here's the pdf: https://1drv.ms/b/s!ArH0__l5B2ATgr4OUfnmU3KfPnKpxA

Also forgot to mention that they ran out of usb to hdmi adapters so the guy gave me a bunch of options to pick from and i ended up getting the HP Wireless Keyboard and Mouse combo: http://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/Product.aspx?…. Other options were a bluetooth speaker and a basic wireless mouse. It may say $109 for the keyboard but trust me they aren't worth much more than $50 - still can't complain, its more useful than the hdmi adapter anyway.

They're delivering the burner and the keyboard tomorrow - good luck to all, it may take some persistence but hey you're entitled to get what you were sold.

  • Got a 'item being shipped' email tonight.
Their Sales Support team in Philippines is horrid! Poor English, not really understanding the question/request and very croaky phone line - can hardly communicate with them.

Been trying to reach the rep via their zendesk and Facebook for 2 days just trying to change delivery address - because office christmas closure.

  • Estimated arrival is Jan 2nd
