The SA offer is poor. I'm on Origin's Solar Boost plan, which after discount offers around 37c/kWh on average when using more than 11kWh per day, and the FIT is 18c.

Here in SA we're accustomed to bending over and saying 'more please' when it comes to power prices. The most expensive power prices of anywhere in the world, apart from tiny islands that use diesel generators.

    Simply Energy

    I am paying 26.68c/kW.hr LESS 38% = 16.54c/kW.hr + GST = 18.17/kW.hr inc.GST

    No on/off peak, same 24x7

Daily charge of 88.82c + GST

Ripping me off $1.50/mth paper posted bill [i don't want it emailed]

I insist that i have BROWN COAL power, i don;t want anything green[sic]

    • thats quite a low standing rate? we just signed up to simply energy and are getting 38% off their standing rates of ~30c per kwh (amounts to ~19c/kwh)

Was previously with Momentum who gave us ~19c/kwh with no strings attached/pay on time discounts but that has ramped up to ~25 cents even with their current offers.

As a very heavy use (>25kWh after solar) in the UED area this deal is still more expensive than the pricing I have from Momentum. Key difference is the daily charge is much higher here, if you had less peak usage it would be much cheaper with Momentum (I have peak / off peak / shoulder pricing). Calculated on my August bill and the difference was $3.15 more for Pac Hydro.

    • +1 from me. It obviously depends on your location as well as energy use, but I've stopped bothering to check how much we are saving each bill compared to our previous supplier (Origin) but it was always in the multiple 100's of dollars. I did do a quick review on alternate suppliers a month or so ago, and even with their revised pricing Momentum still worked out cheaper for us if only by $30 or so. I'd note that we try to minimise power usage during peak periods eg run the washing machine overnight etc.

      Ex GST:
      Daily - $1.0555
      Off Peak - $0.103
      Peak (step 1) - $0.2533
      Peak (step 2) - $0.2473
      Shoulder - $0.146
      Solar - (credit $0.60)

Oh, and based on the info from my smart meter, we're averaging a little under 30kWh/day broken up about 50% off peak, 20% shoulder, 30% peak.

So, just crunched the numbers and, based on our average usage, the average daily cost for power for us would be:
        Momentum: $6.33
        Ausnet: $7.63
        PowerCor: $6.85
        Citipower: 6.26
        United: $6.92
        Jemena: $7.05

So just maybe could be a little cheaper with Citipower, but only by a few cents and I suspect I'd lose the $0.60 solar feedback. Plus I'm happy with the service from Momentum & their support for renewable energy.

Just shows that although Ausnet was the best deal for worker, it's actually the worst deal (approx $1.33 more per day or $470/annum) for me. So thanks for the info, but just like a mobile plan each individual needs to review the pricing based on their own actual usage to make sure they get the best deal….

        • Ausnet, Powercor, Citipower, United Energy and Jemena are distributors. Momentum and Pacific Hydro are retailers. You need to work out which distribution area you're in to determine the applicable tariffs.

        • @Underlord: Ah. Yes, of course. I'm with United Energy so (for me) it would be $0.59 per day more expensive to switch to Pacific Hydro on UE from Momentum on UE.

  • I agree that Pacific Hydro's rates are really good but good luck if you can get a reply for a quote request. I called them up to get a quote for my suburb. They said they will get back within 2 days. Weeks have passed no call or email. Gave up on waiting as we are already moving to the new house. Just went to Momentum Energy who also provided good rates. This is in VIC.

    • They got back really quickly in my case. I found them to be good.

  • Not so great when you compare it with GlowBird..

    Electricity Usage - 0.1625 + GST
    Daily Charge 0.8320 + GST

  • Man, SA really are getting ripped off.

  • AWESOME price breakdown so we can compare apples to apples. thank you. I'm with Dodo and their daily service charge is $1.24 - anytime per KW/h usage is 0.3559 before 30% pay on time discount (so 0.24913 after discount), so looks like I'll be changing electricity providers, as Dodo said they have apolicy of not price matching.

  • +1

I am on Globird and get 87.7c ex daily rate, and 19c ex usage after discount.

  • I agree Momentum is the way to go. Good service and every month the bill is about $65 for 2 people in a house

  • I think a few people may be confused - all prices in the original post are pacific hydro; the split is based on which distribution network you live. You cant choose between these short of physically moving to a different distribution area. Retailers (like pacific hydro) pretty much always base their pricing on the distributors tariffs as it makes it easier to factor in the distributor costs that they pay.

Edit - check this link to see which distribution patch you live in (and thus which pricing applies):

  • There are disconnection fees in Victoria, but no explanation as to when they apply:

I've been with LUMO for over 11 years now and I love the fact that we can call them to see if they can do better if another deal is available through their competitors. Our current rates are (ex GST after all possible discounts):

    Electric

    Supply Charges - $0.685343 / day
    Usage - $0.179292 / kWh

    Gas

    Service Charges - $0.533016 / day
    Peak 1 - $0.01665928 / MJ
    Peak 2 - $0.01367344 / MJ
    Off-Peak 1 - $0.01564112 / MJ
    Off-Peak 2 - $0.01295888 / MJ

Been really happy with them all these while and no issues with discount as we have set up a direct debit.

  • Moved into new rented townhouse and wanted to sign up with pacific hydro. The cyst service was really good. But couldn't sign up cos the units I lived in are on an embedded network and only could sign up with origin 💩

    • +2

Wait till next week when the 'Power of Choice' reforms go live and all embedded network customers get choice of Retailer.

      • Really!!!! Wow thanks! Will look into this!!
