You can install plugins or similar to news readers to pull stuff down before they're DMCA'd. As well, some indexers scramble names so content remains available longer.

Yep, looks that way. Discount is only for the period you're signing up - 1 month/6 month/12month whatever and then it's back to whatever their current price is. I don't like that. My deal for instance from newsdemon is still valid and that was a number of years ago.
Just for the term of the deal, yes. They have discounts from time to time. Also a free month trial to give it a go.
How do you know what is the most popular Usenet? Obviously each provider may have different content and number of users?
Only one usenet. Providers like XSNews here just provide an access point by which they charge you. You then use indexing sites to see what's there or search.
What indexing sites are people using these days? I use nzbgeek but recently their content has dropped dramatically
