If I was shopping at this end of the market, I would get an AMD Threadripper 1950X 16-core for the same amount of money as this 10-core

  • +10

If it were me, I'd be building a Ryzen 5 or 7 system, take the extra $1000 or so saved on the CPU and put it towards a 1080ti and more RAM and still be a few hundred dollars ahead. Unless you're doing some insanely CPU intensive processes, this thing is compelete overkill in the CPU department and falls short of it's potential for Gaming.

    • +4

If you're buying HEDT purely for gaming, you're doing it wrong.

      • Why do you say that? Is the want/need for a gaming rig not good enough?

        • +1

Becuase HEDT setups don't perform as well as mainstream in gaming for the most part. In some rare cases, they do better, but most games just can't make use of them. If you need the CPU for something else, and gaming is secondary, then yeah, they make sense. Only gaming though, spend less money on a mainstream setup and you'll have a better experience.

        • @TheContact:

Fair enough, I'm guessing you're referring to the workstation-grade CPUs when talking about high-end?

        • @Lorindor: More prosumer/"enthusiast", I take workstation grade as Xeons, but yeah, basically, your X99/X299 Intels and AMD Threadripper.

  • Don't get how this here RRP Price: AU $7,399.00
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Alienware-Area-51-Gaming-Desktop…

And this here RRP Price: AU $7,222.00
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Alienware-Area-51-Gaming-Desktop…

Yet the spec's are significantly different, is it really $177 difference between these?
    64GB vs 16GB
    1080 vs 1080SLI

    • RRP is always inflated. the first also has a 4TB over 2TB HD

Man those cases are ugly AF

    • +1

You could always cover it and close your eyes

      • Great for ventalation

    • Paperbag it before you bang it

  • $2800 and no onboard gfx … Sheesh

  • if it was 1080ti than maybe i would bite

  • +6

Don't be fooled by the RRP and how much some of these parts may appear to be 'worth'. This is an old computer, all of the parts have been superseded. Whilst still a powerful rig, it does lack the latest technology. I doubt anyone needs this cpu and even if you did there is cheaper options available now.

Do yourself a favour and get a 1080ti, Dual Channel RAM, NVME Storage, a latest gen CPU & most of all a non-monstrosity case.

I'll never understand why people waste money on these things.

    • +11

I bet there's some aspect of your personal life that others would consider a waste of money.

      • +3

        ohhh the burn 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

      • -4

You are going to lose that bet.

  • I wish adobe Lightroom took advantage of multicore CPUs… I would be all over a system like this if it did..

  • Surprised nobody has brodened this deal yet.

    • +1

Thx OP bought 10 Broden out

  • Would this be a good computer to mine bitcoin?

    • no

  • Will this play Overwatch on medium to high settings? I

  • I’d forgo a 10 core CPu and prefer a 1080ti for that price. If I want cores the a 1800x would fit the bill. This is just silly config.

  • Not worth it. It is not GTX 1080ti
