Given the CPU alone sells for $2,000 and the GPU is about $700 i'd say this isn't a bad deal.

    • +2

      7900X is around $1300…

      • +3

(for those unaware, both the 7900X and the 6950X are 10 core / 20 thread models, so they're in the same ballpark of performance given that they're only 1 gen apart)

        • but in terms of actual performance, do you know why does the older gen model (the 6950x) cost $700 more? I would assume an i9 10c/20t > i7 10c/20t, but I don't know much about hardware.

        • +10

          @jlim87:
Because AMD didn't have a direct competitor at the time.
          Competition is good.

        • +9

@jlim87: Intel price gouging. This gen, AMD had a competitive alternative, forcing Intel to adopt somewhat more realistic pricing (still, the 7900X sells for roughly the same amount as AMD's 1950X, which is a 16 core part).

        • @ozhunter:

          3.30 GHz 3.00 GHz Base

          VS

          4.30 GHz 3.50 GHz Base

The Mhz gives you more performance.

        • @vid_ghost:

Yes, but the more cache can also have an effect on the computer's performance, if what you're doing requires it.

I was pointing out that would be one reason for the price difference.

        • @ozhunter: 100% is because at the time AMD had nothing to compete :) AND intel was pretty much just screwing us.. well whoever was crazy enough to buy one! Not many home users would be looking at a CPU like that.

        • @vid_ghost: 6950x is based off Broadwell-E whereas the 7800x is a Skylake-X part. There's a ~7% shift in IPC and the 7900x has a different cache layout entirely. Plus they're both overclockable parts, you shouldn't be comparing performance based off raw mhz.

Given the CPU alone sells for $2,000

Uh no: highest previous AU sale on eBay is $1499, lowest is $800 and the remaining are around $1100 give or take a bit.

So no one is paying $2000 :)

There are a few outliers close to $1000 globally but not many.

I feel dirty upvoting an Alienware post :/

  • +2

This looks like an insanely good spec machine for video editing. Only thing that I see that isn't top of the line is no NVME Hard Drive. I'm honestly quite tempted lol

    • +2

Half USB 2.0 and no USB-C either.

      • You don't need USB 3.0 for everything eg keyboard/mouse/printer.

Also having some USB 2.0 is good for backwards compatibility. It's a lot easier to install Windows 7 if you have USB 2.0 ports.

    • +8

Single channel Ram setup in a quad-channel capable system.

      • I thought that didnt matter so much nowadays (dont ask me why)

        • +3

          Why?

        • @scud70:

          =) i read it somewhere

        • @juki: well then.. good enough lol

  • +17

The CPU is overpriced considering we now have Threadripper 1950X and I9 7900X which are both more powerful and considerably cheaper.

Though this PC looks like a good deal.

  • +1

Looks nice, then I look at the price, then the bank.

    • +21

      then you close the browser

      • Indeed.

        • Then you throw your pc to rubbish bin and go to supermarket brought a knife

        • +7

          @yuisakas: That escalated quickly!

        • +9

@yuisakas: And used that knife to carve that potato of yours….

        • +2

          @yuisakas:

Then with that knife, you entered the nearest bank, wanted to grab some money there, only to be informed to get in line because other Alienware fans visited them with either knives or guns first( 74 upvotes so far).

        • +2

          @Hsinking:

Welding a knife in a bank is probably less dangerous than begging a wife for $$$

  • wow this is decent :O

  • nice one

  • Anyone know if I can slot in a NVMe SSD in the future? I'm not that good with hardware and don't know if that's possible with this desktop. I believe the performance boost of an NVMe vs. the older SSD is quite significant?

    • +1

Unless there is a specific quirk with this build, X99 chips are fine with NVME drives. Source: Current user of X99 + 5 NVME drives.

    • You can use NVME with it. Huge performance difference between SATA3 & a decent NvME drive.

      https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/23461/54078/intelnvme.…

      • holy crap thats insane, i have 2 ssds in raid 0 and only get 1000MB/s

how much is that nvme ssd? are there cheaper variants like the samsung one?

        • The Samsung 960 evo or the 960 Pro are also very good. I prefer the higher-end Intel drives and can purchase them for a reasonable price (Sub $400) so stick with using them in all systems.

        • @xuqi: wait a single samsung 960 evo/pro can achieve the speeds in your crystaldiskmark? or only the intel ones? cause id pay for that performance

how much capacity for $400? please say 512gb or more

        • @furythree:

$420 each is what I paid for the new 1.2TB Intel 750 drives ~6months ago.

During the 20% off eBay sales you should be able to pickup new 512GB Samsung 960 Pro's for ~$330.

There's little difference between the two performance wise, but due to its design the Intel drive runs much cooler (Never seen it get hotter than 45c when stressed.)

        • @xuqi: omg i getting one

  • +3

Single channel ram would surely bottleneck the performance of such a setup?

    • I guess the assumption here is that in two to three months you'd be able to afford an extra 16GBs stick (not that you'd be able to notice much while running standard programs in single channel mode).

      • +2

You need 4 sticks to obtain maximum performance on the X99 platform, only noticeable if you're using it for anything requiring memory intensive ops.

    • +1

I can't upvote such an expensive CPU. It's like upvoting an iPhone X.

    • +5

Would you upvote a half price Ferrari?

      • Cars for half the price, I would! :P

      • I'd only up-vote an 80k Ferrari

        • +6

So would the rest of OzB as they would know that's a proper car investment for 80k (unlike maybe only one other well known)

      • +6

I would download a car if I could.

  • it not worth to pay the 6th CPU

  • Would this play Rocket League on High settings?

    • Nope, 1080ti or bust for esports titles.

    • This one is not for gaming.

    • +9

Only Nintendo Switch can play rocket league.

    • Well it will play minesweeper.

  • +2

    Not worth

  • +6

    Starting at Weight: 28 Kg.

Geezus… you wouldn't want to move this thing too often.
Do you get a free hernia operation thrown in?

  • If I did not build my rig like 6 months ago I reckon I would have bought this already

  • tbh, this is not a bad deal at all if you want [high end + brand + all the customer server + ease of install], i build mine 3930k+GTX680 in the year of 2011 for 2.2K too.

    • How much is it worth today? Roughly.

      • 400~500

Enjoy your Foxconn green mobos and cheap ram. Oh and a last gen cpu.

    • +2

      I'm sure people will

    • last-gen overpriced CPU*

  • I currently have i7 4790K. Is this CPU a worthy upgrade for a developer?

    • It'd depend heavily on what you're developing; not everything benefits much from a bunch of extra cores/threads.

    • You're most likely an App developer, i7 4790k is more than capable, no need to upgrade to this old i7-6950x.
If you got lots of money no where to spend, get the new i9

    • I upgraded from an i7 4770k -> Ryzen 5 1600X. For compiling, the time saved is huge!
I was surprised myself. The extra threads seem to make a big difference.

      • Thanks. I am a Java developer, I do a lot of compiling as well.
I would be interested to see how much my build times could be reduced with i9 or this i7 or Ryzen 1800X.
Haven't decided if I should go with AMD or Intel yet…

        • AMD seem to be the weapon of choice for anything multithreaded.

        • @AlienC: Yeah they are better value. But the i7 is faster single and multiple cores (I believe).

  • -7

I wouldn't trust anything Dell produces, as when something fails you can't rely on them honouring their warranty.

    • Heard a few people say that, wonder where it stems from?

      • +10

        Ignorance.

        • Ignorance?

I'll post my experience of their lack of response to Consumer Affairs Victoria if you'd like?

Likewise when they're asked to VCAT?!

Try doing a little research and you'll realise if Dell summarily decides it's not their concern (without even a physical inspection! And from the escalation team in MALAYSIA!) then it's off to VCAT to try for a remedy? Shall I post pics??!!

        • @thors_hammer:

Sorry for you, but I've been dealing with Dell hardware since the OptiPlex GX1 release on 3 continents and have never had an issue with their service.

Recently, they replaced an almost 3 year old system with a brand new 2017 model (worth ~$3000 retail) as the old device was causing us issues.

If you have a genuine grievance then please consider providing some additional info to backup your statement, in-place of a generic 1 liner statements like above.

    • I just bought a Dell Ryzen 5 box from another deal. Don't tell me this lol.

    • Meanwhile my Dell warranty experience has been exceptional. However, that might be because it was for business… hmmm.

      • same here,
around 400 to 500 devices in our company over the last 5 years including servers and after sales service has been exceptional.
i have a feeling they care more about the big spenders than the idividuals. but i would buy a dell for personal use if i didnt enjoy building and sourcing my own gear.

  • Blah, Win10 Home only supports up to 128GB RAM. Needs Win10 Pro so it can run 512GB RAM. ;)

  • +3

Whilst the CPU's RRP might be $2k, it is not worth $2k.

Both AMD and Intel have new gen chips that compete directly with this, at a much cheaper price. This chip did not have a direct competitor from AMD at the time, hence why it is priced so high.

When AMD came out with Ryzen and Threadripper CPUs earlier this year, Intel had no choice but to drop their prices to be competitive.

    • Even if you spec a 7900X system yourself, it'll cost a decent amount more than this one to match the other specs, especially if you chuck another $100 for Win10.

      • +3

Yeah, he's not saying this isn't a good deal on the CPU, he's saying the CPU isn't worth $2,000.
It's like if you have an iPhone X for 20% off, might be a good deal on the iPhone X, but it's not worth the price compared with the competition.

  • I didn't know the 1080's came with 2TB of VRAM

  • +1

Why does it list 2 power supplies?
    Power
    Alienware™ 850 Watt Multi-GPU Approved Power Supply
Alienware™ 1500 Watt Multi-GPU Approved Power Supply with modular cabling

    • I was going to ask the same lol

    • +2

      Power is over 2000!!!!!!

    • SLI config requires the 1500, but maybe a 6950X and 1080 config might benefit also, depends how efficient the 850w one is
