  • Better make that "Officeworks".

  • Can this thing stream radio from tunein ?

    • +1

      Yes.

      • Thanks… I think my Logitech Boombox is dying a slow and painful death.

        • +1

It's great, you just say what station you want and it'll play. No account required

        • -1

@fratzhaus: Because it hands over your Google credentials silently… and probably more info then you would signing up manually. Convenience and security/Privacy are not friends.

        • +5

I'm imagining you as an assistant, JV.

"Ok, JV, turn on the lights"
          "…"
          "JV?"
          "You didn't say, please"

        • @Elijha: I'm fine with Google signing me in, just like I'm fine with Google signing me into ozbargain

  • +1

You Officeworks !!Now who do we price beat with ?!!

Can anyone explain why they'd want a device like this? It seems utterly absurd to me that someone would basically put a listening device like this in a central location in a personal space. I get that it's Google and everything, but still, yikes.

Can anyone explain why they'd want a device like this?

I get the privacy concerns but if your question is sincere then the answer is voice automation or I guess for a small percentage aural exhibitionists.

    • To do automation and stuff easier.

And as for the privacy invasion I'm actually less worried about google listening in (which they claim not to be doing) than I am about governments listening in… and I know for a fact that the governments of the world can and do listen in when they want to already (ala Snowden leaks).

      • What happens after Google abandons this piece of hardware and it's no longer being given security updates? Worse, what of the non-publicly disclosed vulnerabilities? I'm not so worried about governments as I am random third-parties. IMO, a device like this would be great if it could process things locally and not maintain a constant connection to the internet, but I guess the technology just isn't there yet.

    • +2

Its like someone using the internet when the government can see all your metadata ;)

    • +2

I guess the same could be said about a mobile phone though. And that is something that's on you all the time.

  • How is the sound on these speakers?
    What is it comparable to?

    • 3 speakers. Better than smartphones.

    • +2

I like it. I’ve got a Bose soundlink mini 2 and while it isn’t as good it’s pretty close in my opinion.

    • how does it compare to the Google Home Mini (around half the price)?

      • +1

        much better sound

      • +1

Better sound is pretty much the only benefit AFAIK. I got my mini today and am impressed with it. Speakers are not amazing but they do the job, perfect for radio listening. Can just ask it to play a song/podcast and it does it almost instantly. Handy little device..

      • The mini speaker is impressive for the size. Obviously no deep bass, but not bad.

Disappointingly, there is no 3.5mm socket, or bluetooth audio out.

If you want the best sound, use a chromecast dongle on your hifi.

        • Then your hifi would have to always be on. That's what is great about the home, is it sounds pretty good by itself. It fills my living room with sound good enough for music while having people over. Mini cannot do this at all. Mini is for voice or tiny room only. Mini is basically slightly better than my phone as my phone can do Google assistant and smart home control anyway

  • +1

But I saw this for $2 just last week?

  • Does xiaomi make an equivalent to this?

  • Is Sounds the only benefit over the mini? Is range improved over this compared to mini?

    • The reports I've been reading say the sound is improved but the microphone is worse.

  • combine with paypal Amex offer

edit - out of stock as I was going to order it :(

  • +2

    Its back in stock now.

    • thanks, ordered

    • thanks, ordered as well.

the device is pretty useless on its own unless you got a whole bunch of home automation things you can hook it up to.

it doesn't even support reminders right now.

Basically, the only thing I use it for is occasionally asking it what the weather is like and playing a particular band or song on spotify (which you can basically do on most phones using the same ok google command anyway)

It would be better if it had a battery and you can take it room to room but it requires you to plug into a powerpoint to work.

  • Out of stock :(

    • Back up again mate if you’re still keen

      • Out of stock again

  • +2

i bought one. i am not sure why. but it looks like it could be fun to have in the kitchen when some friends are over or whatever.

    • Yea it's a really good device for to have when people are over too. In guest mode anyone can add songs to it to play and it sounds really good, also the games are really fun!

  • Its great witb spotify premium. Kids love asking it to play any song. I purchased some of the xiaomi lights and control them. I like it.

    • Hi, how does this work with the Xiaomi bulbs - does this "speak" to each bulk separately or all of them at once? Also, is there a certain bulb model that is compatible? Any help would be appreciated.
      Thanks

    • be aware however, that there is no explicit lyrics filter on spotify, so there is no explicit lyrics filter in spotify on google home.

  • Back in stock again

  • In stock again. Got one.

  • Can anyone confirm if this is the Australian version, and not a grey import?

    • I got mine delivered today…so quick…do you know how to check the version?

      • If it has an Australian plug as standard, and not an adapter, then i believe it is an Aus version.

        • Australian plug it is..also next to serial number there is mention of AU. So Aus version I guess

I am sure some of you have noticed the targeted marketing that appeared after you had a smartphone but how many realised it was listening? The GH will make you come to terms with big brother a little more obviously, you'll begin to notice adverts in Chrome (signed in) will start being relevant to conversations from the night before and not just what you asked Google!

Should only the guilty be worried and can we do anything about it? Maybe not but its going to be interesting where this leads us. Well like I said smart phones have been doing it for years and for most people the only result has been better shopping.

Maybe the first cop on a crime scene will ask the soon to be ubiquitous GH whodunit? ……

  • Bought in store for same price . They weren’t happy to match the price, but did anyway. Wouldn’t price beat tho haha

  • Officework is so quick with delivery.
