  Did a renovation recently, including re-tiling. I learned a few things:

  • Try to buy "rectified tiles" (very straight edges), so that your grout gap can be very small. It looks much better, and less grout-cleaning
  • When laying large rectified tiles, you must use a tiler who is experienced in doing this (mine was), as it requires significant skill.
  • When buying rectangular tiles (e.g. 30x60), check whether the tile is flat (does not bulge upwards in the middle). If it is not flat, you can not lay them in a staggered pattern as the middle will be higher than the ends of a tile. Cheap tiles are often not flat.
  • 45x45cm tiles are considered "builder tiles" because they are cheap to lay. Using them can decrease the value of your home, as it looks 'budget'.
