Pretty good. 10 bucks for 10 gigs. Anything to get away from Optus SIM activation woes

    hmm wait, 7 days expiry?

    • +2

To maximise the benefit, 10GB to be used in 7 days.

      • +2

Ok. I think I understand now — you will get 1GB of data to be used in 7 days, but will have 9GB bonus in the "data bank"

However, you can't access the data bank until you do a recharge, after which you'll be able to use the data stored up in the bank. The data in the bank doesn't expire.

So perhaps title needs amending? It should perhaps read 1GB (+9GB Data after a recharge) Telstra Prepaid SIM Plan etc.

        • +1

Any data in the data bank is accessible if you have an active recharge, which in this case is the initial 7 days.

        • @Sleepy24seven: So it sounds like it's a bonus on the existing bonus which was 1GB + 5GB. Can't say this is a bad deal at all then. 9GB > 5GB.

And if it's just like how the 1GB + 5GB one worked, as you said it doesn't require a recharge to "unlock" the bonus data. It gets activated as part of activating the $10 SIM.

edit: You haven't edited the wording in your description yet. Your description, to the average person reading it will still probably think you need to subsequently recharge to unlock the 9GB data.

9GB Data Bank bonus data to keep as long as you like … Active recharge required to access Data Bank.

How is this a good deal?

You need to pay more money to use the supposed bonus data unless you use it within 7 days. So the price for the data is not $10, it's unknown, but we can say it'll probably be at Telstra's usual rates which are for mugs to pay.

This also smacks of Telstra's craftily put together plans to dupe people yet again.

    • +4

It's good for a quick 7 day data fix. Can't top that ;)

      • +7

@Sleepy24seven: I've got a couple of Kogan vouchers that beg to differ.

        • Yeah 16GB / 30 days Beats 1 GB + 9GB bonus / 7 days even if they were the same amount. Now chuck in the fact that the first one was free and the second one suddenly doesn't seem appealing..

        • +1

          @pennypincher98: 1GB + 10GB bonus per 7 days is 40GB per 28 days, which is better than 16GB/30 days.

There's the added hassle of having 4 SIMs instead of 1 though.

        • +1

          @illumination: 1GB + 9GB**
Personally for $40, 40GB of data for 28 days is trumped by the fact you can get Kogan's 16GB for $4.90 regularly, or even free.
So comparing them now it becomes 128 GB for 30 days compared to 40GB for 28 days.

Please don't point out how much I've manipulated the data :)

    • Read it to mean the bonus data will be accessible for the 7 day period.

    • +7

If you change offers and CM2U the data can be used across 49 days. Link

      • Nice, didn’t know that. This is really smart.

      • +1

Can you explain this in detail it wasn't so clear on the link? But I assume it's something to do with transfering the data to another active Telstra SIM with a 45 day expiratory. Suppose this other SIM would not be a long life one.

        • +1

No. It's about using CM2U transfers in to the service to extend the recharge/data bank expiry date. I haven't done it myself and don't understood it completely either. I think you need to change offers to receive the CM2U and then change back to access the data bank. Best to ask the users on WP.

        • +2

          @sween64:

I guess it must be switching the plans on the $10 SIM and transfer (topping up) $1 on it via a c2u transfer costing $1.25 or so from another SIM.

  • +2

    10gb bonus on $30 sims/recharges as well.

12.5gb in total for 28 days

    • I just activated $30 SIM with Prepaid Extra plan and I got 5GB bonus data.
How I get 10GB bonus data?

      • You won't.

Bonus data only works on $10 Sims!

        Sorry.

    • $10 sims only.

  • +13

buy one every 7 days, cheaper than the nbn

    • +8

      faster too?

      • +2

depends where you live. In our neck of the woods it can be

      • +1

Definitely more reliable. And that's saying a lot coming from Telstra.

  • Cheap at Half the price,…..where, Australia Post now :-)

    True,…..$5

  • -1

Possible to use these data overseas?

  • +1

I bought this kit. I got 1GB data for the $10, there was no bonus unless more money was forked out ie: another $30-40+ I say this is a bad deal as you can get 16GB readily on a $30-40/mth offering which is what this will end up costing you.

    • +1

      Wrong

You activated on wrong plan. Too late to fix for you.

Must activate on PREPAID EXTRA offer.

Nothing else will give you the Bonus!

      • +1

In the signup process I saw that you can choose your plan - the prepay extra costs $30 minimum. So not sure how $10 gets you 1+9GB… There is no "free" prepay extra option when you activate your sim.

        • +1

You must use the $10 SIM. $30 SIM won't work.

Ignore all the writing on the website, it is wrong.

Activate the $10 SIM on Prepaid Extra and get 10GB

          It 'just works'.

  • +2

So, just to clarify, if I bought this + a $30 recharge I'd have 12.5gb of data for $40. 1gb to use in the first 7 days and 11.5gb to use within 1 month. Is that correct? Then if I recharge again, the unused data rolls over?

Also, could I whack this SIM into a Telstra mobile broadband device, like a Telstra Pre-Paid 4GX Wi-Fi Pro?
Edit: Forget this, it says "for phones, tablets and modems" on the pack, so I think that confirms in the affirmative…

Thanks. Sorry for all the noob questions. I'm going to need a bit of mobile data in the next 2 weeks, so this seems to suit pretty well…

    • Must activate on PREPAID EXTRA offer.

Nothing else will give you the Bonus!

  • +2

Just a public service announcement. Be careful when you activate your SIM to get this offer. When I activated my SIM online there was only one pre-paid "plan" option, which was "broadband plus". You can only get the 9gb bonus data if you activate with "prepaid extra". I guess you need to make a phone call to Telstra if the correct option doesn't show up for you. Anyway, I activated with broadband plus, recharged $30 and no extra credit appeared.

Telstra eventually sorted it via web chat after some mucking around, but it was a bit annoying.

    • +1

You had a $10 'Broadband SIM'. The ones that come for free in the box with a Prepaid modem device.

I'm surprised the Pinoy's (voice call centre) or Desi's (Live Chat centre) fixed it, as they are not meant to do this under Telstra rules.

  • +1

Is it different for international passport holder? Didn't see bonus data appear on the summary page

    • No different for International Passport holder.

You MUST Activate on the "Prepaid Extra" plan & using a $10 Starter Pack from Telstra Shops, Coles, Woolworths or 7/11.

Nothing else will give you the bonus data.

      • +1

I actually did activate on the correct plan with the $10 starter pack, but the bonus's not confirmed upon making payment.I know the promo's still on Telstra website, but wasn't confirmed through actual activation process.

  • This things a deceitful POS case of false advertising that needs to be reported to the ACCC and Telecomunications ombudsman. Where to start:

    1) It's deliberately designed to make you select the wrong plan name given that they are confusingly named and thus further entice or fool you into thinking you need to pay more to get the original 10GB of data advertised for $10. Seriously what the hell do "Plans" have to do with Pre-paid sim cards. When did that become a thing? If i wanted a plan i'd go into a store and get a contract.

    2) itcrowd is right … you need to either activate on PREPAID EXTRA offer "PLAN" or speak to Telstra Live chat to get them to change it over after you argue with them for an hour. Not that this is printed anywhere, not on the paper card board the kit comes in, not on the adds in coles at the check out… absolutely nowhere, not even on the website.

    3) Here's the problem though… if you select the "Mobile Broadband" plan you can use it in a 4G Telstra dongle but you'll have no data and will need to recharge it. Kiss good bye to your 10GB. If you change it over, to the PREPAID EXTRA offer "PLAN" it will no longer work with a 4G Telstra dongle. So your only option is to put it in a Phone or Tablet and use it as a wireless hotspot. I tried doing that and now it will only connect to the 3G network.

    4) WHAT A POS… save your money and a headache and go elsewhere.

    5) You know your company is full of idiots when they've been in the business for a 100 years and manage to mess up a pre-paid mobile data sim card. The following departments need a slap across the back of the head. Marketing, Product Management/development and any other clowns involved in bringing this to market.

  • I am already on telstra (freedom plus) and I want to buy $10 SIM and get bonus data and switch to prepaid plus and keep my existing ph number. How can I do this?

    • You'll probably need to ring telstra, i guess.

      • Thanks wombat81. I rang them, and they said it was not possible. New ph numbers only. But I thought I would ask here just in case it has actually been done before. I'd trust the word on OZB before I trust Telstra's word.

        • Buy a $3 optus sim from Auspost.
Port your number to the Optus SIM.
Then port your number back to the Telstra prepaid sim.

The person you spoke to is incorrect (in part). You can switch to prepaid at any time, you either need a blank sim sent out or pop into a store. You won't get the bonus credit that way though (Afaik).

  • Does this come with any calls?
