  • Not quite ready yet ~ but thanks none the less!

  • Strange - I managed to download it fine…

  • I don't understand - it says it costs $5.99 from my itunes - is there a trick to this?

    • +1

Yes you need to log in via the Australian Store - its $5.99 on US store - Australian Store normally $7.99. Most probably its a automatically applied dated deal - eg 24 hours from 7 Nov and its not the 7th in the USA yet.

Ok I have an iPhone - and I personally like these deals, but everyday from the Lonely planet….

This is getting too much so maybe we use a forum post where everyone interested can go

    I have started thread here.

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/33871

Or you can go here daily and find them

    http://appshopper.com/

    • +19

Thanks for the instructions - it's currently being modified.
I disagree with getting these off the front page. They are fantastic deals and people won't necessarily remember to look at the forums. If you don't like looking, dont click in my opinion.

    • -7

      Thems fight'n words pete.

Seems the forums aren't going to work. How about a link on the main page - "todays free app".

That way a certain user base still gets their "bargains" (you know, in case they missed them in the 20 other daily sources of this info they can use), and then the true bargains don't get polluted by this crap.

      • +1

I like that idea stumo! and it may work for other vendors or types of deal too

      • +6

I think the scoreboard tells the story… judging by the popularity, OzBargainers seem to like this type of "crap"…

      • I agree, I don't think this is really the sort of thing that belongs here

    • Ozbargain usually beats appshopper by at least a few hours in posting the deals.

        • -3

          jerk.

besides, i'm going to london/europe soon so i much appreciate these posts.

you're not a fan of backpacking am i right?

        • +1

No, these freebies are usually only available for a day or two. Therefore if it is posted earlier, more people would be aware of it and download it.

        • -2

Does saying you're a backpacker give you street cred?

        • more than pretentious resort holidays give you, stumo, thats for sure

        • What is street cred, and why do you crave it so much stumo?

    • Have being rooting for iphone apps in forums since the start of these~
Glad a mod agrees with this now.

    • +2

This deal is personally the highlight of ozbargain for me. As a backpacker who has an iphone, free aps are like gold dust to me.

    • +3

i disagree. The updates here remind me to go and get them.
If you allow the weekly specials from Aldi, Coles and Woolies on every week, what's wrong with this?

      • -4

Once a week, vs up to 3 times a day, hmm.

    • +3

I disagree with you ozpete, in getting these removed off the front page but I do see where you're coming from.

Yes, there's more and more of these iTunes store deals being posted, but Lonely Planet deals are an absolute godsend for myself personally. With it popping it up on front page and on the Deals page, I'm sure not to miss out. If I was to come across a forum post a few months later, only to see that LP were offering it for free, I would be more than a bit annoyed, at having to pay $7.99 for each city that I wanted.

As another poster wrote, "the scoreboard tells the story" and living in a democratic society, ozBargain have spoken. Lonely Planet iTunes deals should stay. Others, that's a different story. I can't speak for the people here, but I highly doubt I will remember to check your thread on a daily basis.

I've found what irritates me in recent times is in the influx of group buy sites and the deals they offer. Of all them, I've only taken up one of them. The way I use this site, is by going to the Deals page, scroll through and whichever takes my fancy, I open a new tab. Never have I thought to myself, "that's a lot of itunes app deals", but I also seem to be thinking, "that group buy deal is ordinary at best, why are there so many?"
That's probably my punishment for checking the deals page instead of the front page though.

      My 2c

    • direct link to the Lonely Planet free apps listing in appshopper…

      http://appshopper.com/search/?cat=all&device=all&search=Lone…

    • Well, I don't have an iPhone but happy to see deals like this here, and frequently!

  • +3

Tops! Just downloaded ok. Thanks! And I say keep them on the front page…

    • +1

Yep. Keep them on the front page because not everyone has time to glean through the forums in search for good freebies (such as these). Most people only surf this page once a day and we want to see the top bargains/freebies smack bang on front, where it is most obvious.

      • -6

All I'm saying is… have a dedicated single link on the main page.

It could show the top free app that day. When you click it, it could show you a list of all the submitted apps, so you can vote on them.

It never used to be like this, and its going to get worse. We are at, what, 300k apps in the app store? and counting. You could easily fill the front page of ozb with "bargains" like these, (and they would get votes too). Then we could change the name to ozFreeAppleMarketing.com

Then what happens when Lonley planet start giving away their Android apps, and doing win7 apps, just saying.

        • -1

It sounds like your problem is not that you dislike clutter, but rather that you dislike Apple.

        • If the number of itune/Android Market/WM7 Market Apps deals becomes too frequent, people will start negging it because they are no longer a "deal". It will become self regulating.

And if you haven't noticed, the the app deals posted here are usually pretty good deals. For example the EA game sale a while back. Compare this against the "deals" as shown on http://freeappalert.com/ or http://appshopper.com/prices/.

  • Seems to be fine now. It showed free for me.

  • +1

not downloading for me due to "being modified" error as well.

is there a list of the upcoming guides?

    • Still getting the "being modified" error here too. Being trying for over an hour… restarted, logged out and back in to the iTunes store but still no luck.

  • I was looking at this just yesterday for 2012, but was put off by the price. Thanks Lonely Planet and OP :)

  • Thanks for posting ! Like the other freebies before, it will come online to be free in a couple more hours.

  • I can't download it now. It showed as 'being motified'.

  • same here. been trying to download it over an hour ago and it keeps saying 'being modified'.

  • Currently being modified…

  • Great marketing for them. Release a 'free' ap and then take it offline so no one can download it.

    • +1

oh well. i'll just go back to my previous source of free lonely planet guides…

    • +1

Maybe they are modifying the price?

    • +1

you just need to be patient

    • it's not a scam, i must have over a dozen of their guides for free now…

    • +1

no. it's working for me right now as we speak.

      • Finally working - downloading now too!

  • yup.. working now!

  • working to me as well now!!!!YEAH!!!

  • yeap working now

  • Working fine… thanks!

  • thanks for the post!

i much prefer seeing this legitimate deal as a seperate post than having to look for it in a forum.

if any 'regular deals' need relegating to the forum, its the 50c noodle deals and whatnot from Coles and Woolworths.

least these deals are legitimate bargains in my opinion, as they are great apps…. not just crap ones offered cheap like usual.

  • Bring us Brisbane!!!!!

    • +5

      Seriously?

      • I can still get lost here because everything looks the same. LOL

  • Got it for free! Thanks.

  • I have a nice little collection of these City Guides now, thanks to OzB. Much appreciated to the OP and the site in general!

  • Damn it's 48MB…what do I do if I don't have Wi-Fi access until Wednesday? Currently in a remote location, won't be heading back to Melbourne for a couple of days…does that mean I miss out?

    • 3G Unrestrictor if you're jailbroken

    • +1

the nearest mcdonalds (wi-fi spot) perhaps? ;)

      • Brilliant!

I'm going to walk in, order nothing, download for 5 mins then walk out :)

    • Can't you just 'purchase' the app and then download later, because the purchase is till against your account?
That's what I've been doing - I return back home in a fortnight so I've just been hoarding all these apps.

BTW if you go on iTunes and go to your account details, it will provide you with all the apps you haven't finished downloading.

  • Damn require IOS4 operating system.

  • Just would like to share, that by default, a Lonely Planet app will report back to their server on how it is being used. This can be disabled under setting.

I would prefer that the app asks for a permission first from the user first.

  • Still free on 10/11/10 8pm.
