  • With the recent deals i bought and made a

i5-8400 (pretty much the same processor)
    256 SSD + 2 TB HD
    16GB 2400MHZ RAM
    1060 3GB

    INC case/PSU etc

Add about $100 for the better GPU and a legit windows key and this is not a bad deal.

If you are penny pinching though you can do better.

Don't kid yourself. An i5 is not "much the same" as an i7.

      • The 8th gen Intel i processors have upped the core count to complete with Ryzen… So an 8th gen i5 IS pretty much the same performance as 7th gen i7.

        • I'm talking about features, not raw performance. But disabling the cache in the I5 makes a small difference there too.

        • @syousef:

          They have the same cache?

They look pretty similiar to me,the i7 edging out the new i5 by a smidgen, but the difference being 8400s are much cheaper to buy than last gen I7's. Even though I had to splash out on the Mobo

Edit, and a new chipset MOBO which knowing intel, probably wont support new chipsets for more than 2 years but its still better than buying one that wont support ANY future intel CPUS.

        • @mavis30551:

Perhaps I am mistaken but here's what I found.

"Core i5 parts also disable 1MB of L3 for each pair of cores, just like the previous Core i5 desktop parts. "

Here's what it'd cost to build a system yourself. For a prebuilt, this isn't a bad price

    PART
    Intel i7 7700 and boxed cooler 398
    Asus Prime B250M-K Gaming 105
    Kingston 16GB DDR4-2400MHz 179
    Intel SSD 600P 256GB M.2 2280 NVMe 139
    Galax Nvidia 6GB GTX 1060 375
Antec Neo Eco Classic 550W 84
Bitfenix Comrade Mid ATX case 49
    WD WD20EZRZ 2TB 85
    Logitech Wireless Combo MK220 23
    TP-Link ARCHERT2U AC600 35
    DVD Burner 19
Build Fee or Windows License Allowance 80
    Totals 1571

Though it should be noted, a quad core i7 7700 is rapidly becoming "out of style" and 6 core processors are what's in. You won't be able to drop in 8th gen CPU either, even though the sockets are the same, the CPU pinouts are not and it won't be forward compatible

Have you got any changes you would make for a decent build around the same price?

      • +8

        I would pick a Ryzen 5 or 7 CPU
        Pick a decent B350 motherboard
Pick a better case that has more USB 3.0 ports

        drop the DVD burner
MK220 is a mushy keyboard combo, cheap but isn't something you'll want to type on for extended periods
probably won't need to spend money on Windows if you've got a W7 or W8 OEM license floating around unused from a dead computer. Hint

          Thanks, much appreciated!

I'm gutted that I missed the same PC as this deal, with a 1070 8gb, for $1481 back in June. Now THAT would have been a great deal…

        • +3

Dunno why so many people advize to drop the dvd burner. They are only $19 and they are so handy to have, even just for motherboard driver installs and occasional other hardware installs.

The MM220 is a really crappy combo imo. Mine is sitting in a cupboard as a spare. They mini keyboard is really annoying to use and the mouse is super ordinary.

        • I had picked up Ryzen 5 1600 from ebay 20% off deals for $260 delivered. Also, Intel 600p ultra.m2 Ssd. Pretty happy with it at the moment.

        • @mrfluffy:

DVD burner is a no-brainer. Though I'd get a Bluray combo at least personally.

    • Where are you finding 16GB of DDR-2400 for $179?? Cheapest I see is $209 at MSY for "Team Elite".

      • yikes, you're right. I was just scanning Static Ice and copying into a spreadsheet.

With adjusted pricing that build would cost 1571 $1601, a tad over the Dell prebuilt.

    • Building it yourself is half the fun, but yes, agreed, with coffee out now, I would not be looking at Kaby as an option if I had to build from scratch (ie, motherboard and CPU), and man that i5-8400 is damn good value in comparison to a 7700K

I saw the thumbnail and thought it was a phone for some reason, then I read 16gb of RAM and nearly shit my pants.

    • Ha! It does actually look like a mobile in the thumbnail. I wonder if Dell is planning on getting into the smart phone market?

        • Well, yes, that was 5 years ago in 2012… Android 2.2!! Wow.

        • @MrZ: Please don't remind me that 2012 was five years ago.

  • I can second this. I have just the same machine.

    • How easy do you reckon it would be to upgrade the machine?

      • Just take off the side panel, ( I think with a few screws ) then do your work inside the PC! Not that hard just may have to install drivers if you’re upgrading.

  • Of course it's not bad when you're comparing a pre-built system on sale, to full price individual parts…..
But as an ozbargainer, and with how frequent 20% tech deals are, you can build a much cheaper system with higher quality parts when you source individual parts with 20% sales.

    • I have been trying to find lots of PC parts from the last eBay 20% tech deal, nearly everyone price jacked, then I gave up. Honestly it’s a waste of time and pointless because everyone price jacks on the day it starts. Then I waited and came along this … yes it is a pre-built, but for someone who doesn’t want to waste their time sourcing PC parts only to find they are jacked up.

      • I have found that even with the price jacking, some parts still come out cheaper than anything on staticice. Most notably (from the top of my head), the $260 Ryzen 5 1600 and the ~$300 Samsung 960 Pro 512gb m.2 SSD, both from Futu.

Although I should have mentioned before that the 20% ebay sales won't get you the best price for everything. Personally, I used 20% ebay/Kogan/Amazon/PCCG for my recent build. And yes it is absolutely more time consuming to research prices compared to buying a pre-built system, but I do enjoy building and choosing the parts I want :)

        • This would have been true a couple years ago when SSD deals were front page here every day, but with SSDs, GPUs and RAM sticks either holding firm or even increasing in price then this is a good deal.

        • Yep. I totally agree with you, it’s fun choosing everything you want, customising your PC with all the cool RGB lights, and also building it too.

Then again this is pretty cheap for a pre-built system though, for those who don’t care about the looks of the pc or just wanting it to play games.

    • You're forgetting the main part about this deal: it's pre-built, not everyone has the knowledge/time/patience to research individual components, then learn how to build a custom system.

Convenience has worth to a lot of people.

    Will this run ms word

    • +1

max of 30fps at lowest settings

    • +1

Will it run MS Works? I can't afford Word.

      • It will only run MS Doesn't Works. Suggest you install Libre Orifice.

  • Got the 1070 version for $1700 in April…

    • Pre-mining boom though.

  • If you check the dell official website, their systems are now all 8th Gen Intel CPU (with 6 cores) at the same price as the 7th Gen Intel CPU listed on their ebay page. Wait for the sale on their website, or when they update their ebay page listing.

    • Best CPU is the i5-8400. The higher models are a waste.

      • Im trying to make a new build now if i bought the i5-8400 would it be better then the i7-3770k i currently have?

        • Of course it will be. It's 6 cores vs. 4 cores, and 5 generations ahead.

  • The photo looks a phone…

  • How about this for $1538 delivered as an alternative?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AMD-Ryzen-5-1600-2TB-250GB-NVMe-…

    • Oh damn that one is even better and is local, niceee.
      Should post that.

      • I just went ahead and put it up. Let's see what people think!

  • Can anyone comment on the value of the more expensive version of this desktop: item.ebay.com.au/391828745862

    • Is it good value?
    • Interested in this as well

      • Is it good value?

At the price of $1,839, I would say no, mainly because it has been ~$1,500 in the past.

Although it mainly depends on what you would like to use it for and whether this Ryzen system is a better substitute.
