Blacktown council is driving free plant giveaways event with a limit of two plants per residential allotment on 14th of this month @Lake Woodcroft Reserve, Woodcroft NSW. There are thousands of plants for giveaways during the event includes flowers bearing plants, herbs, fruit plant, hedging plants etc. Good opportunity for an OZBargainer with gardening as a hobby.
During the event, ID card will be validated to make sure that receivers resident fall under Blacktown Council.

Bankstown Council has these days a few times a year and appear to be getting more frequent, which is a positive.
Not too sure how it will go with the amalgamation of the bankrupt Canterbury Council into the mix, yet I've noted road and footpath repairs has deteriorated due to cost cutting.

Also, I heard that last time this happened they gave away marijuana plants from a police raid a few days earlier. I hope this happens again.
It's a travelling nursery running every week for 5 weeks at a different suburb in blacktown council I think. Possibly one more after this one? Either way you're still entitled to two free plants at the council nursery in blacktown once a year (on top of whatever ones you pick up at the travelling nursery) as well.

Great initiative, especially given the concrete monsters being built all over Sydney, we need more green! Other councils should follow.
