Great price. But I have one and get radio interference which is a PITA.

    • +6

Yeah I bought two in the last sale, both wreck radio reception in both cars. Ended up getting rid of them, not worth it if you listen to radio. Very cheaply made and not electrically shielded.

It's a high pitched digital interference, if can imagine being able to hear a CPU screeching away while it's processing, that's kind of what it sounds like through the radio.

      • +6

        A cheap radio jammer!

      • Wait… what CPU do you have that screeches? Did you pay extra for it?

    • does it interfere with FM/AM or DAB as well?

  • shipping ?

  • i have only one question: don't you get all those data by looking at your odometer?

    • my civic don't have tacho/rev meter

    • Yes.

    • +2

My Liberty GT is very inaccurate on the speed, I have one of these and it's brilliant. Safer too imo as you don't look down as much to see your speed.

      • This exact model? Do you suffer the interference issues?

    • Ideally, it stops you from having to take eyes off the road to look down at odometer.

      • +3

I think you all mean speedometer

        • +14

Are you saying there's an easier way to calculate your speed than looking at your odometer and dividing by the time taken to reach each km?

        • odourmeter?

        • @buckster: If you adjust your side mirrors right, you can count how many times your wheels went round.

        • @ebenezer7: I tried that but I got dizzy watching them spin, officer wasn't very impressed either when he pulled me over.

    • +3

It's so you can drive at night with your headlights off

      • …and the engine off too…

  • I've got one of these. Works well but a bit frustrating that it doesn't shutdown automatically when I turn the car off, but instead goes into standby. It means I have to physically switch it off and on again every time I turn the car back on, otherwise it doesn't work, which is a pain given its location.

    • Wire its power into the radios so it turns off maybe?

      • I think these get their power directly from the obd2 port

        • +1

Oh, I'm not really a car person, was just trying to throw ideas out there :)

        • @Slippery Fish:

lol ok. Still possible I think just a little less neat :p

        • +3

Simple, just rewire the OBD2 port's power to the radio

        • @chossenger:

Simple, just rewire the OBD2 port's power to the radio

Great idea, you just screwed up the diagnostics port on the car making it useless for it's intended purpose.

        • @Maverick-au:

Personally, I'd use a switch and a shorter sentence.

        • @chossenger: or use the powerbank battery

        • @Maverick-au: No, he is only talking about the power pin.

    • +1

Does it interfere with your radio reception?

      • A few SCA reviews mention radio interference.

    • +1

I could be wrong but pretty sure the OBD2 port still gets power even with the ignition off, so disconnecting it when the car is off will prevent draining the battery.

      • +1

Depends on the car. Some are on all the time, some are on with the ignition switch

    • +1

I'm interested to buy this, consider you have installed it, can you answer some of the questions:
      - Is this the model that will reflect the current car speed to the windscreen? Edit: yes it is, according to below post
      - If you don't switch it off yourself, does it mean, it will drain your car battery if left on?
      - I heard, some of the HUD, the OBD port is designed for US driver (left hand side), is yours connected just fine?
      - Also, I wonder why some people say it has created an issue with the radio reception, consider it is connected through OBD cable?

      Thanks heaps

      • Depends on your car I believe, some cars OBD port is unpowered when the car is off. My car has power, but the HUD has a standby feature so shouldn't drain too much power.
Just check your cars OBD port location, most cars I've been in is under the steering wheel somewhere, so no issue routing the reasonably long cable up to the dash.
As for radio interference, I'm not sure, maybe these people split out the wires running the their OBD port (risky exercise) and connected the power line to the radio. The only reason I might consider this would be so they the unit properly shuts down when the car turns off, as otherwise you need to manually reset it when you restart the car. I'm sure there is a better way to do it though.

        • Appreciate your response :)

did you find any issue with seeing the windscreen display during daytime?

  • +6

    why am I buying this

    • it wont let me complete order, says payment validation failed?
      Edit: worked with different card.

      • +2

        It's a sign.

        • +1

I'm pretty sure it was a written error..

      • call SCA, complain and pay over the phone

        • It accepted a different card. Wierd because i tried paypal and that didnt work too.

  • Can you view any other information from the OBD2 port or is it only speed/rpm?

  • +3

    These are rubbish.

The lag on them is ridiculous.
On average a 1 second delay in the real speed to what is displayed.

  • +7

There is no way this was worth 99 bucks before the sale. They are very poor quality. A friend got a similar one and it fried his obd2 port.

  • +1

ALDI has similar on the latest catalogue for $49.99. Not sure about the quality
    - one good thing is if you are not happy you can return it in 60 days :)

    • It appears to be the same as the X5 ones that are going for $30-40 on eBay, if that helps.

    • why is it better? SCA offer it cheaper, no?

  • +2

Does this show my health bar?

  • Aldi one better at $50 this Saturday? Beat by 3 min

  • Torque has been doing this for years for my car via a BT OBD2 sensor.

  • I was debating getting this in the last sale, great for anyone who has a dudded speedo and needs a cheap way to get their car sorted out, but not sure if that would be OK for a pink slip

  • Bought one previously, lasted 3 hours in the car and I threw it out.
The reflective film you stick on the windscreen is bs.
During the day, you see ALL the white lines reflected, not the speed or other info you need.
It's connected to the OBD plug, in my case, with my car, this means leaving the OBD plug lid open, which means fuse box etc showing.

But the worst part was that you see all white bits during the day. Works kinda ok at night, but what's the point?

    • +1

Did it interfere with your radio reception?

      • +1

Not that I noticed, no. I am kind of surprised this is an issue reported as well.

I was also always in suburbia (South Eastern suburbs Victoria) unsure if this becomes an issue where reception is not clear.

But then again, I hardly used the radio. Bluetooth streaming of Google play music.

On most cars you can unclip the ODBII plug from its holder, so you can connect the HUD cable and have them tucked inside the fuse area with the cover installed.

      • didn't know that, I'll check it because I always wanted to have diagnostics plug on it and leave it in.
This was stopping me from doing so because I couldn't close it.

IMO best speed gauge is from GPS.

    • not during cloudy day…

      • GPS works fine with clouds. Tunnels however are another story.

  • i wouldnt call this a bargain when you can get ones that appear similar for $26

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-5-HUD-Car-Head-Up-Display-OBD-I…

Supercheap one doesnt include postage - which is $7.95

But thanks for posting anyway, because It got me thinking about aftermarket HUD :) I just want a slightly better quality one I think.

    • I wish there is a review system with the one sold in eBay, so that we know the quality of it….

    • This would be a very loose definition of similar, as this has Chinese writing on the screen, no tachometer (revs) and I believe the SCA model may have even had a fuel gauge. Its also Australian stock and warranty so if you really had a problem with it you could return it.

  • guess this would only work at night time right?

  • Will it Work on my Motor Bike lol

    • Sure, just attach it to your helmet screen….

  • +1

Damn no GPS. I dont have OBD2 - Classic car owner problems.

    • Easy, sell your car, buy another car that has OBD2 port and report back your experience with the product :p

  • Thanks OP, got one for the Lamborghini
