Laptops are so cheap nowadays.
In late 2006 I bought a $2000 Acer laptop with a Pentium M 1.73 ghz, 512mb of RAM and a x700 128mb Mobility Radeon.
Now we have $600 laptop with about 3 times the CPU/GPU performance and 8 times the memory… how times have changed. Or am I just getting old.
Ditto, the only laptop I've had to buy personally (thanks to my kindly employers' constant streams of same) was in mid 2007, an Acer 5740 with a 1.5ghz c2d & 512mb RAM. An unheard of CPU at the under $1k price point at the time!
It's had a workout as a desktop replacement for a while, a general utility lugabout and even a stint as a media centre (MCE remote works great with IR port), the thing has never missed a beat, I chucked a bit more RAM in it a year ago & now it's running Win7 64bit & it's powering on, the missus has swiped it now as her personal machine!
Acer has had high spec, low price machines for quite some time now; we've even got them at work now after a horror run with HP Aust; they're as good as any other machine in the same class! When the price is this low, you simply can't go wrong! ;)
P.S. We probably are getting old dude; but the times, they are a changin' too! :)
[update] A family member grabbed one of these, used the coupon code (thanks monkp) & got it picked up from their local store (thanks BingLee); they're stoked, after the cashback it's gonna end up costing them $554 or something…damn that's a cheap lappy!!! :D
