  • Is the battery replaceable?

  • Does the extra 5x LED's really get you much?

My 25x LED ones arrived today… yet to charge and install though. ;)

These are brighter than those $15 Aldi ones but the solar panel cannot be placed separately from the light so can only be used outdoor where exposure to sunlight most time of the day unless you don't "fix" it to the wall but only hang it and take it out for a sunbathe once in a while.

Thanks. Am interested in these, but providing good sun light (walls are shaded most of day) is an issue as you write. So interested in your comparison of light levels. Have you used both to compare?

The lights are designed for different purposes.

Currently using the $15 Aldi solar Shed Lights from 2 months ago. (These are different to last year's model.) Motion detection stays on if slight movement detected, then turns fully off after 90 seconds. So stays on for long time if anyone moves in detection area while light is on. Also can switch on as light without sensors. Certainly bright & pleased with them. Have one set up under shade sail with solar panel above - which could not be done with these. I've converted a few to run off USB power for use indoors (light is bit too bright to look at).

These lights give dim light until until motion detected, then turn on for 15 seconds. Handy for lighting paths as people pass by. Just not sure if they are brighter, and do they remain on if additional movement detected (what I require), or turn off & then on again after movement detected?

Number of LEDs is no indication of light output, as that is determined by efficiency & effectiveness of LED used. Similar looking units have had very different light output in my experience.

Both aren't bright enough for you to replace a security flood light but good enough to light up the driveway to see where you are going. I am not an expert in measuring the light output in term of lumen and the reason I said it was brighter because the light is more concentrated on a smaller/narrow area and does hurt your eyes if you look at it from close distance. Aldi ones produce slightly softer light. But if where you want to put it does not get decent amount of sunlight during the day time then Aldi ones are definitely your choice.
Edit, these ones don't stay on for too long when motion is detected maybe 10-20 seconds but if motion is detected again it will quickly goes on again. I do not think the on time is adjustable but enough if you are just passing by and need the light for a few seconds.

        • Thanks. Interesting comparison of light intensity. Helped me make a decision. Appreciated.

I grabbed a few Aldi ones to experiment with (60 day return for refund & time is almost up, but looks like I'll keep them). I like that the light remains on if someone is in detection area. I have a few (modified to USB power) set up in a corridor which come on as I approach, but stay on when I need the light longer. Only 1 is outside & works great in very shaded position.

So these don't suit my purposes but would be great for paths.

Probably few cheap solar sensor lights are adjustable, unlike mains powered sensor lights which can change sensitivity of detector & time on.

  • Any suggestions on how u hang them outdoor on a brick wall ? Don't want to drill holes if these end up crapola.

    • +1

      liquid nails.

sort of prop the light up with a length of 2x4 to hold it in place whilst the glue dries.

    • +1

I just used a double sided tape and it's been pretty sturdy.

    • Drill into the mortar. No holes in your bricks and easy to neatly patch the hole if you take the light down.

Whats the Difference between this and the $6.99 ones on ebay?
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/30-25-20-8-Solar-Power-PIR-Motion…

    • nothing. they look pretty much the same. though I've never seen them that cheap on ebay. nice find.

edit -sold out. looks like someone from Brisbane bought the last one.

    • Looks like this ebay seller is out of stock now anyway, However it seems various seller have them for $8.99 on ebay.

      • +1

Got the 30 led just now but strange when on my cart it says last one, after checkout I add another one and it says still last one. Seller feedback just 2.

Probably now is sold out. Might be new seller doing promotion to get lots of feedback therefore selling cheaper than others.

        • yeah, I bought one last night and same thing. just bought another.

  • are there stainless steel versions instead of plastic , i have westerly facing walls so plastic tends to,perish from the UV quickly and black plastic absorbs a lot of heat and kills batteries in summer.

    • Try search on eBay with the similar keywords plus stainless

Mine from last weeks deal arrived yesterday.

They're the 20 LED model, not the 25 as advertised. But they're bright and well worth the money.

There's a no-name fairly lightweight 18650 inside, wires soldered to what may be a protection device shrinkwrapped in the battery. These are not waterproof and may not be water resistant either, water can easily get in the back. I'd suggest running a silicon bead around the left, top and right hand side of the rear panel, but not the bottom.

The LED is on dim mode without movement and goes bright for about 10 seconds after detecting movement for the last time. I'm going to try modify it so it stays bright for about 90 seconds after movement detection, will also test battery capacity and see if I can modify the charge cutoff so the battery only recharges to about 80% which should more than double battery lifetime.

    • let me know how you go with your project, mate! looks very interesting

      • +2

        Tested battery capacity yesterday,

Discharged with 500mA load until voltage fell to 3.3v, so approximately 10% remaining.

Charged at 1,000mA until battery hit 4.20v = 36 minutes
Charged at 500mA until battery hit 4.20v = 32 minutes
        Didn't do a CV charge.

My guess is the supplied 18650 battery is about 8-900mAh

Analyzing the circuit today - it's divided into two sections - the solar and battery charge section that's always powered up, then the other half is powered by the on/off switch - it's got a 65Z5 3v regulator for the PIR circuit and the PIR is an AS412.

Will have more details in a day or two

        • are you able to change mode? or it has to be dim in dark? thanks.

        • @jackystudio:

I didn't have time to look at it again last night. Hopefully tonight and I should be able to answer your question.

        • I bought a couple of 30 LED lights and will replace the battery with some 18650 samsung batteries retrieved from laptop batteries.

Cheaper on eBay. $8.49 each and probably other sellers too.

  • +1

It is bright but quality very bad. LED panel not properly glued. It came off while taking out of box.

If you are importing from China then quality will be always an issue.

    • +1

One of mine fell off and dropped a total of 3 inches onto hard ground and stopped working. Make sure you secure yours properly and don't use the included double sided tape unless it's a clean smooth surface :)

      • mine fell off (yes because of that @@$##$$%# double sided tape) from around 2+ meters to the driveway concrete, still working fine.

        • My solar panel came off (not much glue holding it), but I think it's broken a solder for one of the wires on impact. I'm going to try and fix it, but I suspect it's easier to buy some new ones in the meantime :(

  • Bought a single one of these a while ago to test out and seems to work ok so ordered this as well.

  • anyone can confirm this canNOT be used indoor? (ie indoor light is not enough to power the led)

  • One of mine arrived with the Led panel floating around. They certainly dont look weatherproof so I'll be running a bead around the solar panel and the led panel.

  • OK so Ive found one of the other ones is also DOA now. online chat to Tmart and they asked me to take a photo of the defective ones. Indicated that to show they are defective they would need to be photographed in a dark cupboard to show that they arent working.
Really poor quality control. Will be steering clear of these in the future
