This is a Digital Audio Player (basically a fancy iPod). These play higher quality files than an iPod or your phone can and/or sound better.

This one can play quite a lot of formats including a new one called MQA which has very small file size (though there isn't a lot of music available in that format yet) FLAC and DSD just to name a few. The other reason you may go for this one is it's based on Android (5.1.1) so you can install most android apps like Spotify and Tidal (it's basically like a phone without the phone function, but with boosted audio specs. It has 2 Micro SD slots and can take two 200Gb cards. This is quite big (about iPhone 5 size).

Another highly thought of one in this price range is the Cowon Plenue D US$199.25 A$247.98 (the silver one is cheaper than black and has just been reduced US$30).
This one has higher specs, but (from memory) is a closed OS so you can't install apps. It's more compact too.

You'd really want to do heaps of research of different models before deciding which to buy as there is a huge range of prices and features. They have some limited internal storage, but you'd want to buy MicroSD cards as well for any quantity of music.

  • I was very interested in the Onkyo version of this, but found out that the EQ only works with the included music player and not with other apps like Spotify or Tidal. Pity!

  • would i hear much improvements if coming from a LG V20?

    • I wouldn't recommend splurging on a DAP unless it has balanced output, and you have ear/headphones with removable cables so you can use a balanced one. Especially for the V20, which is extremely capable audio-wise.

      • thanks mate, guess i will save myself some $$ then :)

        • +1

The ones with balanced output (and headphone cable to match) are another price tier up. Sure they’d be better, but I wouldn’t say one without it is not worth getting.

        • Fiio X5 III's only about ~$400, and it is technically everything one would want in a DAP. Most of those above are Veblen goods (snake oil). There's a few upcoming ones (Fiio X3 III? iirc) in the $200-$300 price range also with bal, but no Android. UI should really not be overlooked with these, they can be pretty mind-bogglingly terrible.

Really though, I'm hoping a phone manufacturer one day puts bal out into an otherwise also decent phone, nothing beats daily convenience.

        • @xrailgun: US$400? Just a quick google and that’s what I found it for. Does look a good one, nice specs.

        • @wfdTamar: My bad, yes, about USD$400 normally. I got it during eBay's EOFY site-wide 20% off (full price AUD$549) and combined it with TRS to get it down to ~AUD$400.

Without TRS, you could get it from international sellers during ebay site-wides on ~AUD$500 full price, it'll also work out to about $400, and really AFAIK there's no point buying local stock, there's no RMA centers in Aus anyway. But Fiio might have a non-conventional RMA structure and I haven't had to deal with them yet, so I'm really not sure on this.

  • On the DP-X1, the sound quality between 2.5mm/balanced and 3.5mm/unbalanced is significant. While 3.5mm output is more rounded, much sweeter than ipods, 2.5mm gives a massive boost to sound stage when compared to 3.5mm. 2.5mm is just so much better.

  • I have one and paid about twice this price a year ago. This is a no brainer if you are after a decent DAP. The only issue I have is that some of my cans with think cable surrounds don't fit into the jack due to the bumper. I use an extension cable to resolve this, others have removed the bumper which is just screwed in. However, after removal the screw holes are reported to be a bit ugly…

    • I've read that the battery deteriorates after a year or so of usage. Is this the case for your unit?

      • Isn't that the case with all devices that use li-ion cells?

        • That's true. However, this is running a much older version of Android which does not have Doze or any further battery optimizations. I'm afraid of this DAP becoming worthless after a year.

  • BTW, someone on headfi mentioned they rooted this Pioneer and installed viper4android for system-wide EQ.

  • How does this compare to the new Fiio x3 3rd gen?

    • OMG don't get me started on the fiio 3rd gen, has been the bane of my existance. I currently have mine returned to the shop i purchased awaiting a refund / replacement with a XDP-300R. I tried to hard to love it. It seemed to tick so many boxes.

Was i Wrong, just go on the fiio forum and read through the comments. Fiio have effectively treated their customers as beta testers. So many issues, do not recommend

      • What issues? Sorry I'm a complete noob and this was my first ever dap after the ipod.. Don't know what more to expect from it but been happy so far. Was debating between the x3 gen3 and the Sony nw-a35 but the forums suggested fiio for its better sound output and quality.

        • I'd also like to know what happened, I've been using one for ~3 months and it's been a pleasure.

  • How does this compare to just playing lossless music from an iPhone?

  • I was about to get a Fiio X5 but now seeing this I don't know what to do

  • Old thread but anyone know if this deal is still active? getting over $400 currently?

    • Seems to fluctuate a lot. Its US$349 now! The Cowon one is a better bet at US$188. By all reports sounds better and is smaller (the Pioneer is pretty big). It just doesn't do other Android apps. Amazons SD cards are pretty cheap too while you're there, though you may get one cheaper on ebay when they have a 10-20% off sale.

      • I have just received a refund from my Fiio x5iii and was hoping to grab the XDP-300r. WIll look into the Cowon, dont know anyhting about it. UI is of high importance so will see if it stacks up, thanks for that

        • Yes, GUI is important. With the Pioneers you can use whatever app you want which is good. The Pioneer app has everything you'd want (I think) but is no iPod app as far as ease of use goes, but then as I say you can just use another one.

These are very good for around AUS$90 with 10% discount.
Just purchased another. 11 days delivery :)

    • I really enjoy the album art however. I use two 200gb micro SD cards, one for albums, the other for my dj music. I find it so much more immersive seeing the album art. Also with my dj music it's like having a crate or records, you remember the album art when searching for a track.

      • +1

As my bedroom "TV" is a 120" projector screen,a 4.7" screen is never going to be immersive for me :)
Grew up with LPs,so dig that.
The GUI on the X3 isn't real flash.Have to click through everything. Doesn't bother me.
Have a mixture of 32,64 and 128 GB TF cards.
        If I was DJing,prolly use a laptop.
Sounds great for the money though. Have four of 'em and an X2.
