Kids under 13 already receive free public dental.

Not all. Only if the parents receive family tax benefit A.

        Thats just yr 7 & 8.

All primary school kids get free dental in Vic.

Ah! So its not free. Must be a paying adult, and they get to tell you both you need expensive work.
Beware over-servicing dentists. It is rampant.

        • Can you please provide me a link to this. I am unaware of how primary school children can get free dental. I have PH and have been paying the gap for my primary school children. I checked the council and is only free if you are entitled to ftb a.

          @minniethemoocher:

Double checking - sorry, not quite free, but all primary kids have access to school dental service.

a small fee applies to children whose families do not hold a health concession card. There is a maximum charge per family per year.

In WA, I have used both the free school clinic, and my own dentist (found a good one). The private dentist is more skilled, but for simple fillings or extractions it makes little difference.

Of course, the school service will not include orthodontics.

If you want to go private, its almost certainly worth getting extras insurance and waiting the 0-2 months. Visit a dentist who is on your insurer's list for negotiated rates. (Assuming Vic works like other places.)

Emergency work is always free on the Vic school dental service.

        • @manic: Like I said it's not free. And this service has never been at my kids government school in the 7 years they have attended. I suspect this service is for disadvantaged kids which is why the page is for principals and administrators not parents.

It was free for us and we do not receive family tax benefit.

Dentist was excellent, an older lady dentist who was doing the work part time in her retirement. Free toothbrushes as well.

          Kids loved it.

        • They are very cheeky. one of my kids came back from daycare a few years ago & they'd had a dentist in visiting, and the dentist said they'll need braces…my kid wasn't even 3 at the time.

But my favourite was when I was at uni, I saw a denist for a checkup and they told me I'll need some significant work done as only my front & very back teeth touch and the middle ones don't. Next time I went home I visited my family dentist and asked for his opinion. which was.

Son, does it stop you drinking beer?
          No
Does it stop you eating steak?
          No
Does it stop you making love to your girlfriend?
          No
Well then, it's not a problem then, is it?

As pointed out earlier by Manic, this isn't free as you have to "pay for yourself". In addition, you run the risk of over servicing.

As posted above, some community dental places in Melbourne are free for Children under 13:

A Dentist here. Symptomatic of the current dental environment with the extreme oversupply of Dentists. Sadly, over servicing with bait advertising, loss leaders, shop a dockets and "creative" item descriptions and other unprofessional conduct is with us. Get a good conservative Dentist and stick with them.

    • I think that's a gross overstatement. It's only an offer to get new clients and provide complimentary check-ups to children, anything else is pure speculation. My previous dentist that I went to for 20 years was free for all checkups, that was their policy, there was no gimmicks. They were conservative and I assumed that they were good until I went to my current dentist. Unfortunately because he is a preferred supplier of my health insurance he tends to over-service. I would like to know how you can tell a dentist is good without trying a few?

  • No overstatements, just facts. Your new Health Fund provider is making my point with treatment recommendations+++. Maybe you should have stuck with your existing reliable Dentist. There will always be someone cheaper about. It's your health , not a Xiaomi product.
Ask your Doctor, Pharmacist or other health care professional about a recommendation.
There is an inverse relationship between gaudy, self promoting, every possible provider practice and the standard of care.
