        • @edwardcr: mam staff and members are very friendly. Great for radio, audiobooks and ebooks. Rare share, rainbowsharingnation is good for radio shows too. The Empire bz is good for Au/can/NZ stuff.

        • +1

          @fryandlaurie:

Thanks for reminding me about The Empire!

I have been a member for years, but haven't been able to access the site for months, so I gave up on it.

You prompted me to try again, and I've now found their new address.

      • The top 5 are inaccessible. On Optus.

      • The 2 I always use aren't even on that list. never had a drama :))

    • +2

Another option, if you use qbittorent it has an inbuilt search function that uses a few popular public trackers, and you can manually add more.

Bypasses actually having to go to the ad ridden site.

      • just wandering, what is

"Add windows firewall rule" in the installation process of qbittorent?

        • By default windows firewall will block all connections, and the first time you open an app that wants to connect out it'll come up with that window that asks if you want to allow it (https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/image17…)

Ticking that box just sets qbittorent to allowed, so it doesn't ask when you first open it

        • @enceladus94:

          oh right, thanks for explaining

also when i search for torrents on qbittorent

i keep get pop ups saying "application contained"

          any idea why?

        • @CBR250RR: Never seen that before, got a screenshot?

        • @enceladus94:

im not sure how to upload it.

btw its a popup from my anti virus

        • +1

@CBR250RR: imgur.com is probably the easiest image host. Windows has a built in screenshot tool called snipping tool, you can find it if you open start and type snipping tool. You can then save the file and upload to imgur.

You'll have to add qbit as an exception to your anti virus, it's safe to use but naturally as a torrent program it tends to upset anti virus what with all the outbound connections its making.

  • how to use vpn with synology ds download/ ds get?

    • +6

I've contributed a lot of info on this thread:
      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2392590

I recommend Private Internet Access. Works great with Synology.

Using the info in that thread, and depending on your router's capabilities, you can configure that Synology can only access the Internet via the VPN.

All local LAN traffic is unaffected.

    • I used IPVanishVPN for a while but recently switched to PIA. I bought a negear R7000 router and installed tomato firmware on it. I can now assign which devices need VPN and I have a killswitch script if the connection goes down.

    • I really struggled with getting VPNs functioning with the Synology in the past. It would drop out constantly, fail to reconnect etc. I ended up setting up a router with PFSense and setup the VPN there.. Then use rules on the PFSense box to choose which traffic goes over the VPN and which doesn't. Ended up being a much easier to control solution for me, and made it so that a simple change on the router could add or remove any machine on my network to the VPN connection.

    On TPG they work

  • +1

Thank you all for your feedback. Did some googling and the 8.8.8.8 worked :-)

  • Opera Browser has a free VPN and open trackers allow you to download via magnet links so they will basically always work..but don't use them…

    Private Internet Access

they had a deal on here not long ago

There is also some great guides to putting the PIA proxy info into Utorrent only, so all your normal browsing / work / web / gaming traffic is fine, and just your piratez go through VPN.

      • have got a dedicated machine at home with a sole purpose for torrents.

gaming is on my gaming pc

  • what sites are blocked? i just tried quite a few and they all work for me

      https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2017/03/heres-the-full-block-l…

Your ISP has probably plans to block them in the future, if they are not blocked currently.

Not sure what the effect might have, people who have their favourite sites blocked will simply do a google search and discover a way of unblocking a site.

      • Interesting. Im with Telstra.
Im still just trying to watch everything on youtube.

      • any idea when TPG plans to block the torrent sites?

        • TPG has blocked them (I'm on TPG). However if you are on say a Google DNS you'll still have access

        • @bs0: On a separate note, what's Google DNS and how to set it?

        • @virhlpool:
Check out the comment by phosphoresce below, soz on mobile

        • @bs0:
I am also on TPG and Pirate Bay is not blocked for example…

        • @noskich:
I'm pretty sure at one point it was blocked, popped up with the big green warning notice from the federal court. Works fine now though, even when i change the DNS back. Maybe TPG reverted? idk

          edit:
TPG did comply at some point (Dec 2016 article)
          https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2017/04/ask-lh-is-it-possible-…

        • @bs0:

The only pop up I got was the advertisement for VPN trying to scare you to buy their service…

    • a lot of streaming sites are starting to get blocked now too

  • +2

Type "pirate bay proxy" into Google and you'll get back heaps of torrent sites that still work.

  • +3

Use Tor Browser. Google it. It's free.

Then transfer your torrents to a torrent server (seed box) such as Bitport. It's not free.
Then download your torrent as a zip file over normal http protocol.
No P2P traffic. No need to seed. No ratios required.

A good vpn for watching on line and other nefarious activities is NordVPN.
They even have an Australian server which provides good speeds for normal usage. It's not free.

Windscribe is not worth a pinch of the proverbial. Too many drop outs and reconnects.

  • makes me laugh they created a monster now they are trying to control it , good luck with that…

  • Yeah I found Ivebeen finding it hard lately to get torrents for a GoT on Monday nights. If you setup a VPN you should have no issues. Probably worth setting up a VPN or a seed box if you are going to be torrenting anyway imo. I use Nord. Works well for me and They get good reviews www.reviewmyvpn.com

I use PIA and highly recommend it. It works on computers, phones (Android), Android TV boxes etc. It's around $50/year but then no one knows what I download. Price you gotta pay for privacy.

  • You can use Kodi to watch it without downloading it.

    1. Open Networking and Sharing Centre
    2. Click on your mode of connection (e.g. Ethernet)
    3. Properties
    4. Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
    5. Properties
    6. Set your local IP address according to your modem range
    7. DNS: 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4
    8. OK

You can now access public torrent sites.

    • nice, worked a treat

    • Does this setting have any negatives or side effects? :)

      • 8.8.8.8 (and 8.8.4.4) is Google's Public DNS so you're free to use it. Your ISP can still get mad at you for torrenting stuff but at least they can't just outright block the sites.

        • any disadvantages if i leave my pc at home with this setting all the time?

        • @dragonindespair: No disadvantages. Set and forget.

  • So easy to legally parallel import this content for a fair price these days. Subscribe to GetFlix and then a HBO subscription is only about $15 (and gives you access to their whole catalogue).

    • Getflix was pretty patchy last time I gave them a shot.

Worked great Sunday -> Thursday, but forget about Friday / Saturday nights, wasn't worth the coin.

      • I've been pretty lucky and had a smooth run, although I noticed some of their DNS servers work better than others. Some good alternatives to GetFlix out there too.

    • +1

Foxtel Now Pop pack for $15 has HBO shows on Showcase, doesn't require Getflix, and works great for me. I have Getflix as well for UK channels though.

      • Is Apple TV supported by Foxtel Now ?

        • Not yet but they are adding new devices every couple of months. They just released the PS4 version last month. I use it on the PS4, Chromecast and a Telstra TV that I bought for $60 off Gumtree (still sealed in the box) and it works well on all three.

      • Isn't this on 720p?

  • +7

    Nice try ASIO

  • +4

Trying to understand Ozbargain user logic. Whenever someone posts a cheap cd key for Windows/office/etc, everyone starts reporting it and saying how it's not tolerated and illegal, yet, when its movies/tv shows, it's sorta encouraged with tips and howto.

    • +2

If I had to guess it would be because someone is profiting off illegal stuff (windows keys for sale) vs. giving a link to tv show (no one earns anything).

      • +1

Don't torrent trackers get ad revenue?

        • +4

Using a torrent website without adblock? People do that?

  • "just" noticed?

  • Streisand effect…

  • +2

    Seedbox FTW

  • +2

Kodi with realdebrid is the way to go

  • I can access all of the torrent sites no issue, we're with a smaller ISP and they haven't blocked anything

  • It takes a 5 second Google to get around the blocks.

  • Dat feel when everything you want is downloaded automatically <3

  • -7

I'm actually amazed at yourself and the majority of the comments here.

If you have a job and enjoy Game of Thrones- pay the $15 per month for the Pop pack with Foxtel Now.
Obviously you get a whole lot of other shows as well.

If you are not paying for it, ultimately you are hurting the show.

    • +9

Except it's a terrible service, and foxtel have had a long time to get their act together. If you give people only one legal choice, and it's crap, it isn't hard to figure out what people will choose to do.

      • Have you watched it on Foxtel Now?
I use a HDMI cable to connect it to my TV from my computer and it looks great.

      • Foxtel Now is not a terrible service. Quality is quite good (720p HD, not upper end Netflix but as good as most other streaming services), apps are good, no drop-outs or pixellation if you have a decent connection (in my experience). Have you tried it?

        • +2

Funny you ask, yes, I did! The first episode froze and we had to wait to watch it. Foxtel cited the reason as "Unprecedented demand" (bs). I then cancelled my 2 week trial.

It also happened to users the following week, so I'm glad I cancelled.

        • @Ninth Sphere:

Fair enough. I use it almost every day and it hardly even drops a frame. I was overseas for the GoT premiere though and that would have been super frustrating. In fairness to Foxtel, even the official streaming service in the US, HBO Now, crashed on the premier so even HBO themselves underestimated demand.

    • -1

If it was reasonably priced and didn't have the Australia tax added, then maybe people would.

      • +1

        What would reasonable pricing be?
You can cancel Foxtel Now at anytime. For the 3 months of Game of Thrones, it would cost $45. Maybe cheaper. with a 2 week free trial.

        • If netflix can offer the catalogue they do for $15, with no ads, then foxtel should do better than $15 a month for a few channels.

      • +2

$15 for the Pop Pack is very reasonable considering HBO Now on its own is $US15 to US customers.

    • +3

If I understand correctly, HBO isn't hurt by pirates in Australia. As far as they are concerned, they have received their money from Foxtel.

The only people who are hurting the show is HBO, by allowing exclusive airing rights at all.

      • Correct. But every Australian that torrents Game of Thrones that could pay for Foxtel Now is one less subscriber for Foxtel. The less subscribers Foxtel has then the less likely they are to pay for access to HBO shows. Whilst USA is their biggest market, HBO also earns a significant amount of money from international licensingz

Obviously one person makes zero difference but in the long run all the little things add up. Ultimately makes it worse for all of us with less great shows such as Game of Thrones made.

Do you have a job? Can you afford $45 for a show that you obviously like? (And access to multiple other shows as well)

        • Would be great if they had an option to pay for just one show and not the other stuff that you don't want or care about.

        • +1

I can't speak for anyone else.. but personally I'm more than happy to pay for the show. I have no interest however, in encouraging these shitty exclusive distribution deals. I own the previous 6 seasons on iTunes, and I've already paid for the season 7 pass. If I look for "alternate" means to watch the show that I've already paid HBO for, I won't feel guilty.

      • Sorry- missed your last statement. What would be your ideal situation regarding airing rights?

        • Perhaps global, non-geoblocked access to HBO's streaming platform. Get it directly from the source a la Netflix.

        • @phosphoresce:

HBO Now is $US15 though, so with GST would be at least $AU20 if available here. The Pop Pack has more content for $AU15. When HBO Now is officially available here, that will be an expensive downgrade.

        • Worth noting that GoT in the early seasons was on Free-to-Air SBS for nothing (except for watching a few SBS ads)!

The fact that Foxtel bid a huge amount of money for broadcast rights says that they thought they could make more profit on it than SBS.

    • +1

For me it's how Foxtel crashed when the first episode of GoT came out this season. Has totally turned me off them. You had one job Foxtel!

      • +1

No doubt they stuffed up but HBO Now crashed in the US too so even the show's creators underestimated demand. The service has been flawless for me but I wasn't watching that night (and would have been pissed off too if I was).

        • Yeah true. I guess its a combination of reasons, but if i'm going to pay to watch 7 episodes of one season and they already screwed up on the one, i'm just not convinced. That and the fact that you can just stream it!

    • +1

      I agree with you.

      Younger generations…. sense of entitlement….

I could go on but I'd just end up getting flamed… :)

    • -1

      Foxtel Now.

Giving money to Murdoch. yeah. Na

  • +3

    This thread is a trap.
Tell OP about non blocked sites and watch how quickly they become blocked, entirely by coincidence.

  • -1

Use Cinema box best free streaming service.

    • Or show box :)

      • I tried show box but bit annoyed by their ad. Any way to block it on Android TV (MiBox)?

        • There are lite versions floating around here with the ads removed. Seems like showbox is down anyway. Plenty of alternatives (and the lite version) here.

  • +1

Use a vpn (for legal purposes)

  • Thanks to everyone's recommendations for VPN services - have been wanting to taking the leap but haven't gotten around to it. Will do so ASAP.
