I have a perfectly good desktop and have almost no use for these. But I'm always so tempted to buy one every time they go on sale, is there an eBay discount for psychological help?

    • I also need

    • I also have a perfectly good (old, i7 920) desktop, and I suspect this would do 95% of what I need it to while using way less power and making far less noise. I'm soooo tempted…

Anyone know how the graphics on this compare to a GTX560?

Can't find any benchmarks of the 650..

but this gives you an indication: http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Iris-Pro-580-Mobi…

I would say you get similar graphics power/ a little bit less performance than your gtx 560.

        • Thanks. I was having a look around last night and I think I might keep an eye out for a skull canyon NUC deal. My wife does a lot of Photoshop and Lightroom, and the multi-core performance of the skull canyon beats this one (as it should being quad vs dual). Plus if I wanted to I could always get an external GPU for gaming.

        • Note: the Iris Plus 650 (no longer called Iris Pro) is the next generation of the Iris Pro 550.
It's almost certainly slower than the older Iris pro 580, but benchmarks seem hard to come by.

    • I don't think it will replace your desktop, at least not in the sense that you won't ever be able to "really" play games on it. But I got a much lower powered NUC for a dedicated server /torrent box. Never regretted it. Runs of a oily rag so I offload all my torrents to it, runs 24/7.

I bought this during the last sale, works great.

Just be aware the current intel display drivers have issues running 4K@60Hz.
Screen would occasionally flicker or blackout. The intel support forum has acknowledged the issue and are working on an updated driver, for the mean time they've suggested installing older drivers (which has a different set of issues).

All other resolutions runs fine though.

    • Is the issue for HDMI, Display Port or both?

      • +1

I personally had the issue with DisplayPort, but reading the support forum it seems to affect the HDMI port as well.

        • Is there a working combination of BIOS and graphics driver or a workaround?
Seems like driver version 4664 is the one with least issue? One person reported older BIOS (BIOS version 57) works for him.

          @netsurfer:

I'm using latest BIOS with 4664 on DisplayPort and it works fine for me. Though I don't use audio through the displayport. Some people seem to be having audio issue with 4664.

I am new to this. Is this like a replacement for a desktop PC with a smaller form factor? From the listing, it seems to have no RAM or Windows installed. Assume we have to buy and install on our own.

    • +1

Yep that's correct. Depending on the exact model, for storage you either put in a 2.5" hard drive /ssd, or an M2 SSD (storage on a little card), then you add your own RAM, and windows licence and go for it.

  • I have proper desktop i5-6500. anyone know if this is faster than my i5? is it good enough for word, excel, email and internet browsing?

    • yes these nucs are like a laptop with no screen , we use i5 6th gen as desktops in our office ( have hundreds of them) and users had option of laptops or nucs ….. they have the same CPU as a laptop but use less desk space and have more usb ports.

unless you are into hardcore gaming and were looking at a $1000+ rig and a dedicated graphics card they are fine.

are they as fast as the equivalent full blown desktop version …… no the desktop versions uses much more power and hence runs faster ….. speed is about heat, cooling, power supply size ….. but full size desktop use more space and power and noise ……

  • About the same price as Amazon. Pity I already bought the i5 version of it.

  • Any good deals on some RAM and/or m.2 SSD to suit? preferably 8gb RAM.
