    It's basically a magnetic field sensor.
    Useful for say, flip covers that have a magnet embedded in them that will tell the phone to stay off and sleep when the flip cover is closed, and to wake up / turn on the display when you open the flip cover.

    It's also how your smartphone knows when you toggle a switch on the Google Cardboard VR accessory.
