Ahh Rockchip, not so great. Stick to Amlogic SoC

      • Depends on what you're using it for. If it's just for video then it should be fine. Anything else would be taxing on the gpu.

a deal on the a95x with 905x would be good, i have the 2gb ram 16gb rom nexbox and it's a very nice unit, great interface and unlike xiaomi mi box it has an ethernet port. the 1/8 units are cheap but i haven't seen 2/16 cheap in a while …

  • Does anyone know of a better solution for a media player than the WDTV Live for playing MKVs with an external HDD only?
I don't need any streaming ability and don't want the complexity of a HTPC.
The WDTV does the job but it's getting a bit long in the tooth and the laggy response in menu selection is annoying.
They have dropped all updates on these units but I think the slow response in the menu selection is due to not enough horsepower under the hood.
I have the best of the latest firmware updates installed already.

I know you said HDD only, but still NVidia Shield is still the best out there. But you get what you pay for, the xiaomi mi box is the second best at a much more reasonable price, I stream from a NAS usking Kodi and sometimes would need to restart Kodi on the Mi Box, but zero issues with the Shield.

as I keep spruiking - amlogic s905x based media player, preferably 2GB RAM and 8GB storage (or 16GB if you prefer). Stick LibreElec on a USB or SD card and then you can dual boot between LibreElec and android if you want to play games on the tv.

With Kodi you can add USB hard drive as the media source and DISABLE metadata scraping for that source - ie: you get none of the eye candy that Kodi normally provides, but you get instant listing of files on the hdd and bang instant playback (which is what I used to love about my WD TV).

There are plenty of these on ebay for $40-50 AUD or so, I have 3x MINI M8S II (2GB RAM, 8GB storage - gave them to my family to replace their WD TVs) as well as a TX96 (think that's it) which I stuff around with Armbian.

      • MINI M8S II

Have you tried the Android TV firmware?

      • From my experience, 1gb ram is fine for a Libeelec box.

You might have problems if you're running lots of add-on services like tvheadend transmission etc but if just Kodi itself, runs great. Have had a Beeline MiniMX S905 for about 2 years, running VPN and for awhile a few of the sports and streaming TV movie add-ons you can get from questionable sources.

These boxes are so cheap, buy the box you need right now and get the box you need next year next year.

all these player will play mkv with external drive, and you can load VLC which plays everything or Kodi which has a nicer interface.

  • Personally I would stay away from rockchip. Xiaomi MiBox 3 or H96 pro plus are the best value for money at the moment.

  • I personally got a Hi3798cv200 box, which is great. If you want top notch Picture Quality, go for Sigma chip.

  • But no Gigabit LAN?

    • Xiaomi MiBox only has wireless, no Iview and the fanbois lovem ….. but yeah LAN is important, 100M is fine, it's full duplex and no wireless bloat in the packet formats.
One of the many units we have is the Nexbox A95x ….. it's not bad, cheap, nice interface and S905x based…. remote is dead (or the rx ?) so now it's bluetooth dongle and keyboard.
