  • Thanks Rep/OP. A very good price for this spec box. Have ordered one for the caravan.

  • Nice price, got 1, thanks REP

  • Can some one please tell me why I need this if I already has a small form PC running Powerdvd for my movies?

    • +2

because it uses even less power? powerdvd? wtf?

      • I use Powerdvd because it allowed me to use my home theatre gears with all the latest sound eg. Atmos or am i missing some thing here?

        • +2

Amlogic S905x based chipset boxes with LibreElec installed either to internal storage (wipes out Android) or running from an SD card or USB stick have full pass-through for Atmos, DTS-X, DTS, AC3 etc.etc. also has native 4K output if that is needed, but you would need to rip your original blurays etc. to a HDD and play them from that as no DVD/bluray drive on the media boxes.

try something like this - not affiliated btw:

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mini-M8S-II-TV-Box-Amlogic-S905X-…

          Libreelec download:
          http://kszaq.libreelec.tv/s905/8.2/8.1.3/

    • Surely Kodi would be a better option? If it's just for movies then install OpenELEC or LibreELEC and save yourself the hassle of Windows..

  • Seems to be $103 to me.

  • This box has great reviews. It's great value for money for high end specs.

  • Have two. Work well. Great price $62.00. You won't find cheaper. Fast, easy to use. Running Android 7.1. Comprate da Franco Cozzo!

  • Purchased one thanks.

  • Awesome! Got one. $11 cheaper than the "reduced" price provided by gearbest yesterday.

What's the difference between this and the Xiaomi Mi box?

    • +1

The mi box is better. Runs true Android TV

      • mi box is worrse ….. no iview, sbs on demand or freeview …… this box runs the australian plug ins straight out play store ….. no need to go geeky and side load etc.

my mi box is collecting dust as we watch some australian content especially if you have kids.

  • Good deal! However, does S912 play well with Kodi? I thought I read it somewhere that Kodi doesnt like S912… Or has this been fixed now?

    • +2

nope.. s905x is still the best way to go. and cheaper around the $40-50 AUD mark.

      • could you please recommend one box with S905x?
        Thanks

        • already did - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/api/folder/list/c?tid=4955643

they're all pretty much the same, however I have 3x Mini M8S II boxes (cost me about $45 AUD each, delivered) and I run LibreElec from an SD card on each box. I gave them to family, to replace the WD TVs they had. Family tends to play stuff from USB drives, not stream things.

For the US power plugs I just bent the pins slightly with pliers so they fit in the AUS power points.

        • @gizmomelb: Thank you Gizmomelb. But the link you gave didn't work. Could you please help check?

        • @Averell: no worries.. these are the Mini M8S II players I own:

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mini-M8S-II-TV-Box-Amlogic-S905X-…

but some other vendor may have them cheaper on ebay.

also please note I ordered one of these last night for $55 AUD inc. express 5-8 day delivery - http://www.geekbuying.com/item/MECOOL-M8S-PRO-Plus-4K-TV-Box…

the difference with the MECOOL M8S is it has official support for 1080p HD streaming for Netflix and Youtube when running in Android (oh nd it is running the latest Android version 7 - Nougat). I ordered it to test it out, but ultimately one of my players will end up running Ubuntu and be used as a low power (10W) desktop to replace my current destop which sucks about 200W.

        • @gizmomelb:
For these TV boxes with 5V power supply, I prefer sourcing from the TV USB port. It's more convenient.

        • @Averell: cool, but check if the TV supports a 2A power draw first.. don't want to fry the tele!

        • @gizmomelb: any issue with the wifi module while running libreelec? It's a hit and miss with the module having support

        • @Dezeption: not with my Mini M8S II devices, you just need to try a couple of different DTB images until you find one that works with your equipment. Or physically open the case of the media player to find out which network / bluetooth chips have been used inside it.

EDIT: from memory this is the DTB file I use - gxbb_p200_2G_100M

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mini-M8S-II-TV-Box-Amlogic-S905X-…

So just to confirm, that box will passthrough HD audio (like TrueHD etc) to an AVR? And also supports the refresh rate changes with Kodi for correct playback of of 24Hz/50Hz/60hz media? That's the only reason why I didn't jump at a Xiaomi Mi Box as it doesn't support either of them.

Currently have a HTPC (which is a gaming PC for my TV as well) and Windows 10 is giving me the sh*ts with regards to Kodi, from the remote barely working since the Creator update (or whatever it is) to just the usual Windows annoyances. Can't really justify getting another Nvidia Shield TV (have one in my room) and just want something I can purely use as a media box for x264/x265 content but has to be able to output HD audio and automatically change refresh rates as I mentioned before. The box you linked to definitely will do it with Kodi (or LibreELEC as it is)? Don't need anything else as my TV (Samsung F8500) can do Netflix and all that.

        • +1

@Porthos: correct, that is the box I have and I have pass-thru for AC3/DTS (I disabled enhanced CODECs in Kodi settings, but they are supported). I use SPDIF from my device to my AVR and the HDMI is direct to the TV and fully supports media matching framerate changes. CEC over HDMI does not work, that is my only disappointment with this box.

Handles x265 content with ease - I've been HEVC encoding all my content on my NAS and have 'recovered' over 6TB of storage with minimal quality loss from the original ripped content.

I recently bought an air mouse and highly recommend using one over the standard IR mouse that all the media players ship with.

I'm using LibreElec 8.1.3 currently and have almost never used the android OS on the device, or any android apps on it - but I do know that Netflix will only be low resolution if you use the Android Netflix app.

But at $45 AUD or so, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

        • @gizmomelb: Sweet, cheers for that. Might take a punt on it and hopefully it all works without issue!

    • +1

kodi runs fine on s912 but s912 costs more than s905x and it's hard to pick a difference when watching tv.

  • Hi Op,

I want to get this quick if I pay for the direct priority mail (extra $3.11) will it guarantee to be delivered in 6-9 business days as quoted?

  • https://www.banggood.com/NEXBOX-A95X-A1-Amlogic-S905X-1GB-RA… <<< Could someone gives opinion on this one? What I need is to run some app for online TV (not more than FullHD).
    Thanks

    • I have no experience with that box, however my personal experience (especially if you want to run Kodi with all the eye candy turned on) is grab a media player with 2GB RAM, it'll be a little faster when navigating through menus etc. 8GB or 16GB internal storage, doesn't matter.

price for this has been slowly rising - I bought one last night (to test and compare with my other boxes, then I'll probably run ubuntu on it and use it as a desktop for web browsing) for $49 AUD, cost an extra $7 AUD for express 5-8 day shipping.

When you get the MECOOL try the Android TV firmware from Freak Tab.

        • +1

will be doing that, that's one of the reasons I ordered one :)

      • Thanks.
How much time would it takes to ship from Geekbuying? They says "shipping in 6-9 days" <<< I think that they meant they will start the shipping after 6-9 days

        • I ordered one last night, so will see how long it takes as I paid the extra $7 for express shipping.

I can however say that I ordered a car bluetooth audio player on 26th July, it was shipped from company on 29th July and it was delivered yesterday (8th August). So pretty decent, but not express imo.

        • @gizmomelb:
Now the price is $50.x, plus $7 will be 57.
          OP's H96 PRO is $66 (63+3).

What is the better choise? $57 for Android 7, S905X, 2GB RAM, vs. $66 for Android 6, S912, 3GB RAM.
I'm new to these TV boxes, please help give your advice.

        • @Averell: don't buy the S912 chipset, it doesn't have good support with Kodi and has auto framerate issues (for 25/30/24 fps videos TV/movies). S905X has best support and is cheaper.

look on ebay and I'm sure you'll find mini M8S II s905x chipset boxes for about $45 AUD inc. delivery.. that's how much I paid for the last 3 I bought.

or if buying the Mecool M8s box - select the free shipping and it'll only add an extra week for delivery time and save the $7 delivery :)

        • @gizmomelb:
          Thank you Gizmo.

I think I would go with this one :) https://www.banggood.com/Mecool-M8S-PRO-PLUS-Amlogic-S905X-2…

Not sure whether the OP can find a discount for it.

        • @Averell: does the code above - 20H96PP81 - work?

        • @gizmomelb: no, it doesn't work :-( There's the code "elec" which gives about 9% discount though.

        • +3

@Averell: Try this code 20MM8P6 should take approx USD$9 off.

          refer to this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/316460

        • @bb_hunter: Thanks for the code. Ordered one to test.

  • Any deals on the MI 6 or One plus 5? Thanks
