  • is Astone better than WDTV Player?

  • I reckon WDTV is better as Astone just rebadges Chinese ones…. You can find exactly same player on Internet with different brand!

    • Astone put their own firmware into the "Chinese ones" and have a pretty good forum with support and upgrades. I have one of these and it works excellently.
      http://www.astone.com.au/forum/index.php

    • Bang for buck the Astone is better but overall the WDTV is better

      • How so?

      • Sorry I negged that comment accidentally and can't undo it? Anyone know how?

Anyway, as long as you mean the WDTV HD (the HD is the key player int he WDTV lineup), then I'd tend to agree. But is the added features of the WDTV HD (which is pretty much just a nicer interface) worth the extra money?

        • If my research is right, the 110D also supports downmixing while only the WDTV Live does

          • @hippocrit: the 'tech specs' page on wdtv.com.au seemed to suggest the HD can downmix Dolby digital to stereo…. "An audio receiver is required for surround sound output. AAC/Dolby Digital decodes in 2 channel output only."

Having re-read that though, the HD makes no mention of DTS support. Whereas the Astone AP-110D does support DTS audio.

            • @salem: also, WDTV HD doesn't even have ethernet support….yikes!

Looking further, the WDTV Live seems to be the one with the same feature set….almost. It doesn't support DVD menus, but the Astone does. The WDTV Live PLUS does though. So…how much extra does the WDTV Live or Live PLus cost compared to an Astone?

I've never used a WDTV but I love my AP-110D I got a couple of months ago, it plays everything I've tried except for some Flash Video. Sure it's a rebadge but the underlying hardware and software seems pretty good to me. Some Astone stuff is junk (I'll never buy an Astone hard disk enclosure again) but this player has been serving me well.

The shipping charge on this deal seems a bit steep, though. I hate it when sellers hide part of the item cost in the shipping, it's deceptive.

  • Awesome player. Not a bargain for it though. This deal is $93.63 total. Can get it for $94 with free shipping (to ACT is all I checked) from Junglejumble.com.au, or $90 from pccasegear as linked by Andy above. OK price for pickup I guess, but not good enough to get a +ve from me. As people have hammered into me on previous deals where I want to vote neg, you can only vote based on the value of the deal, not how good the product itself is ;)

  • Reading Astone forum, this AP-110D is pretty good.
Can play, I think about 99.99% of the video file format in the market.
    WDTV is more expensive.

I am thinking of buying AP-110D as well but wait for a bit cheaper ones.

  • does anyone know what the menu is like with this player? i have an nbox at the moment and when you are trying to scroll through 1000 or so movies it can take an eternity because you have to go through them one by one…! Can you skip between big sections at a time or alphabetically? Any feedback is very much appreciated! cheers

I find it scrolls through quickly, but it helps to have each movie in it own separate folder.

      • +1

It displays about 10 items per page. the >>| button is the equivalent of 'page down' and will scroll through a page per press. (|<< is "page up")

  • This is a pretty good player.

Has a few quirks, but more codec than my ps3.
Ps3 has nicer interface however. Astone bit sluggish.

I sold mine to a friend, and tempted to get another for parents.

Price is good. Was 75$ earlier in the year.

  • Total price with shipping just put me off. well its got everything you want for basic media player. DTS, HDMI, codec range: RMVB and H.264 MKV. those are a MUST if your looking for media player these days. (for anime and movie lovers)

If only there was Free Shipping ;)
