Does MAC OS need antivirus software?

    • No. Nor does Windows these days just don't disable the inbuilt one.

      • +4

No offence intended but I'm calling BS.

The ANZ doesn't give a continental about how secure Apple say their OS is.

If you don't have an up to date Anti virus software then your internet banking isn't guaranteed.

If you have an up to date antivirus then they will cover you is my understanding but not if you don't.

I've had the argument with ANZ but they said its simple.

We don't cover your loss if you don't have up to date antivirus.

I use Nod32 and have done since my bank manager told me about the fine print of my internet banking.

        YMMV

        • +14

No offence intended but why are you still banking with one of the big 4? It's 2017.

        • +1

          @swapsey:

Legitimate question. What's wrong with ANZ Bank? I'm a student and get 3.15% interest per month (1.5% + 1.65% bonus) every 3 months for 3 months. For the past year i've gotten this rate. If there's better options, I would love to find out. Let me know please.

        • +2

          @DAOtmc:

None of big 4 feature in these lists from Choice, just as a quick ref:

Best 3 savings accounts by standard rate

          Move Express Saver – 2.40%
          AMP Saver Account – 2.10%
          Catalyst Money Saver – 2.10%

Best 5 savings accounts by bonus rate

ME Online Savings Account – 3.05%. Ongoing bonus rate if you make a weekly purchase > using PayPass Tap & Go on your ME Everyday Transaction Account.
RAMS Saver Account – 3.00%. Minimum deposit of $200, no withdrawals.
Australian Unity Active Saver – 3.00%. Minimum deposit of $250 and no withdrawals
          in the month.
AMP Bett3er Save Account – 3.00%. Minimum deposit of $2000 per month into linked
Bett3er Pay account from an external source.
ING DIRECT Savings Maximiser – 3.00%. For customers who also have an Orange
Everyday Account and deposit their pay of $1000+ each month.

        • @swapsey: ING is only 2.8% as of today. They offer the max flexibility too so I'm with them at the moment.

        • ["ANZ Bank? ….. get 3.15% interest per month (1.5% + 1.65% bonus) every 3 months for 3 months."]

What account type gives you that? Term or at call?

        • -6

No offence intended but why are you doing internet banking in an age like this??

Wow I think it's bad enough to do online shopping where I have to put my card details on somewhere half-decent but have had bad reviews..

I do all my banking in person except checking my account balance which I do over the phone.

        • +11

@pennypincher98: No offence intended but why are you still banking at all. I have all my money in Gold necklaces.

        • +1

No offence intended but this thread is like, so offensive.

        • @cartwheelz623:

No offence intended but why did you need to post that? it isn't really..

        • +1

@pennypincher98: just some banter mate .

Thanks OP, signed up! Havent got key yet but am sure its in spam or on its way ;)

        • @DAOtmc: hmm i only get 1.15 + 1.35 = 2.50% on may 2017 up to aug 2017.

          before that 1.25 + 1.35 = 2.6% (feb 2017)

how do you get that much bonus?

        • +2

          @cartwheelz623:

lol I know I am just bored and getting in with the ozb spirit :P

          @cartwheelz623:

          Highly underrated comment. :P

      • Why do you say that? As macs are becoming more popular their are viruses popping up..

        https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/can-macs-get-viruses…

      • This is wildly wrong.

        https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/windows-10…

Windows defender only hit 99% of 0 day attacks and malware.

        It doesnt seem like much.
But even Avast free, Bitdefender and some more hit 100%.

Go ask someone who got hit with the recent ransomware attack and lost their pc.
It takes one piece of malware to wipe out your pc.

Relying on Windows Defender only is not smart.

Windows and Mac OS both absolutely need anti virus protection.

        https://www.av-test.org/en/news/news-single-view/strong-prot…

Using a "early 2014" macbook air since new, and haven't had any issues with viruses/trojans … on my pc's theres always something going on, so I think they may need it not :)

      • iMac since 2010. Power user/never an issue (ex PC user).
Thing still goes like a rocket with only an i5 processor.
Never a dollar spent on virus protection.
Cost more initially, but has paid itself over many times now!

        • Virus protection isn't that expensive… my paid ESET worked out to about $10/year. I'm tipping your iMac cost more than $80 more than the PC's I've had in that time.
(Not debating apple vs windows, just your "has paid for itself many times over" line!).

        • @braddsey: Fully accept your opinion. But it has :O]

          Regards.

security via obscurity isn't a good protection anymore

Don't watch porn , no virus ! Problem solved! /s

      • +2

Get some rubber gloves for 1* extra protection. Disinfectant may apply for bonus 5* protection. Guarantee no virus or your money back!

      • I don't watch porn. I still get malicious popup windows that bitdefender catches. About three weeks ago it caught a ransomware attempt.

    • +1

May be 10 years ago, no need of AV for Mac.
Looks like you guys have no idea whats happening in the Mac OS world

      https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/zmv79w/mysterious…

      • No computer is risk-free, never has been.

But some are riskier than others, actually a hell of a lot riskier. By many K-orders of magnitude.

It might be helpful to provide some perspective: Modern AV software (as opposed to your computer's Operating System) is proving an increasingly lucrative attack vector now. The DoubleAgent attack is just one of many:

        https://www.engadget.com/2017/03/21/doubleagent-attack-anti-…

The question is, just how much risk do they present, in comparison to going without. Fact: Installing AV presents risk too, possibly a big one, as AV update services have extremely privileged rights- so once co-opted your system is all theirs. No AV company has a solution that addresses this fundamental problem and they've been working on it for years. And on top of that, you have to trust everyone in the AV company (and many others who 'work with them', almost completely too.

The equation also need to include what your computer does, and/or what you do with it.

Do dangerous stuff? Hacking naked? In many cases it is best to treat your computer as hostile from day one: Avoid connecting it to any other devices, enetering any form of PII into it, remove/cover up cameras and mics. And of course, don't forget to use a separate Internet Connection.

One fact that remains that if you use Android or Windows, you are using the riskiest platforms on earth, so don't gloat from your glass houses just because the rest of the world starts using AV too: It says nothing about platforms and everything about the trip that humans and machines are embarking on.

It's like saying I haven't used a condom all my life, never got HIV…. thanks god I only got herpes, chlamydia and gonorrhea, so all OK.
Lets not forget about all the other I have infected in the meantime !
Get the Protection at the level YOU need, if you're a hacker get the best protecton possible, if you go to church every sunday and only go to the church website then less risk, so MSE or ACG is more than enough.

    • And they have never had an anti-virus to scan and see if there was actually nothing wrong!

    • +2

The funny part of your comment is that a Hacker is more likely not to get hacked, because he knows not to click on dodgy banner ads and install questionable software.

The Sunday church person who hardly uses a PC is the perfect target for trojans and viruses when they install something they don't know what it is.

OP could you explain the methodology to take advantage of this deal?

    I have a library account .

Its early, nearly 1am, and I'm too tired to take in what I'm supposed to do.

    Thanks if you've time

    • @Rifraf, Just go to the linked webpage and enter your name and email address.

Anyone know how this compares to Kaspersky Internet Security?

    • +2
      • +2

For the price of free, it is still an excellent antivirus. I would get it myself if I needed it, but I don't bother with antivirus for personal use.

I scan everything I install thoroughly (with offline tools and the virustotal website) and I don't use internet explorer.

    • +2

Both Kaspersky and Eset Nod have low rates of false positives, so they are recommended for people who deal with a lot of crackes and keygens. Kaspersky has a much larger installation footprint (like 800MB vs 150 MB). Kaspersky is faster at scanning files and slows file ops down less than Eset (Kaspersky has about a 3% performance hit, Nod about 25%). They both have some advanced configuration options. Kaspersky is more likely to nag you than Eset.

  • +5

It looks like this is for Windows as well.

Congrats! You're a step closer to a safer digital world with ESET.

    Your license key is:
    REMO-VED-LICE-NSE-KEY

    What next?

Step 1. Download the ESET Installer
Download the installer for your system ESET Internet Security for Windows or ESET Cyber Security Pro for Mac

Step 2. Follow the installation wizard.
Follow the step-by-step installation wizard to install.

Step 3. Activate your your 12 month subscription

    • OP could have worded it better. Internet Security is the Windows equivalent of Cyber Security Pro.

  • Did anyone receive their code yet?

    • Claimed mine around 1am this morning. It arrived in my inbox almost instantly.

    • I've got one at 9:00 am today. I used some key to active two windows and a Mac.

    Its no longer working.
Form is not available at this moment. Please come back later.

First attempt was successful but I never received the email :-(

    • I just did it and received the email within seconds.

  • How does this compare to Kaspersky?

    • If you were to compare this to Kaspersky 2015, I would tell you ESET is behind.
But when comparing t the inferior Kaspersky 2017, go for your life with this

Kaspersky outperfomed ESET on 0 day vulnerabilities in the last round of tests.
But overall was rated lower than ESET.

        • KS virus scanner has always been undoubted.
However the application set has taken a hit, it's more cumbersome, memory intensive, sporadic root kit scanning, and overall lack of AI in detecting applications that are a threat, and those that aren't.

  • +5

ESET has the best antivirus protection out there. They don't advertise themselves much, but it is highly regarded in the IT Sec industry.

Their protection is not intrusive, professional and frankly just works.

No I don't work for them, just a happy user since 1999.

    • Funny you should say that I've been seeing ESET poster in bathrooms and on the sides of buses all over the city with something about protecting private pictures.

  • I click on deal and cannot see anything to do with a free 12 months… Just Home, Business etc…

    • You have to click on the picture or 'Go to Deal' on the right hand side of the title.

    • +1

Have you used it lately? - it is the most tidiest non-intrusive AV around at the moment. They vendors have their time in the sun every few years. Currently Kaspersky is copping it for their 2017 version.

  • Form is not available at this moment. Please come back later.

  • Key still not received :(

    • Likewise. Confirmation that the form has been processed but nothing after 4 hours.

  • My only issue with ESET has been uninstalling it and going back to the default MS product for Windows 10. Now there are pros and cons with various AV suites but I've really struggled to remove ESET such that Windows Defender will operate again.

Yes there are tools from ESET to do this but on several PCs I support they just haven't worked - there's quite a few forum threads in this vein too.

To be honest though the bigger risk has been end-users and finger trouble…..

  • +2

Eset is great for 365 days. Then you decide to uninstall it. It breaks your networking. You Google and find out about the Eset uninstall utility. Good luck with that. Time to reinstall Windows.

    True story.

    • Which version of Windows? 10?? (I've received the code but haven't installed it yet. I'm using Win 7.)

And are you saying you should use the uninstall utility but it was too late for it to work for you, or that you googled and found people complaining the uninstall utility broke their networking?

      • I first installed it on Windows 8 which I later upgraded to 10.

When the trial license expired I tried to uninstall it via Windows Control Panel. This broke the networking. I then tried the ESET Uninstall utility and had no luck with that. I even tried the scary instructions from ESET regarding when the Uninstall utility fails, http://support.eset.com/kb2289/?locale=iw_IL&viewlocale=en_U…

I did eventually get the networking back up and running by manually deleting and reinstalling network drivers. But I suspect most people would give up before this point and reinstall Windows.

        • Hm… Thanks. Maybe I should continue what I've been doing. (Uninstall bitdefender, download a new trial using a new email address, reinstall.)

  • OzBargained! No key received until now.

  • Received my keys… however I have a feeling Bitdefender free has a better detection rate….

  • Thank you so much :D

  • Does ESET have ransomware protection (detects it before it begins)?
Does it have a banking sandbox?

    • Answer my own post… Apparently has:

      • Ransomware Shield (blocks malware that tries to lock you out of your own data)
      • Banking and Payment Protection (secured browser)

Bitdefender allows you to lock folders to prevent ANYTHING accessing them. Does anyone know if ESET does that, or does it just 'catch' ransomware on the fly, as it tries to start corrupting your system?

      • ESET and in turn NOD32 is one of the best security / anti-virus programs you can have ever. Although, if you missed out on a key, put your email in and get a 30 day free trial (everything works like the full version) when 30 days is up…. do you own another email address? you get another 30 day key…

how many email addresses real or fake you enter after 30 days means you get another trial key.

        you could do this indefinitely

        • Thanks, yes, I have the key. I'm concerned about two things:

          a) Someone else in the thread said uninstalling it disabled their networking. (If that happened, I no longer have a phone. So I'd have no way to even start fixing it.)

          b) I'm interested if ESET's ransomware protection allows you to lock access to certain folders. Bitdefender does this meaning ransomware cannot delete or encrypt files in those folders.

        • @GregMonarch:

          a) Someone else in the thread said uninstalling it disabled their networking. (If that happened, I no longer have a phone. So I'd have no way to even start fixing it.)

The issue is a small minority and I've never had that issue with Internet Security. I've seen it happen with the more advanced Business Endpoints which haven't been uninstalled correctly.

ESET have a guide here which shows you how to backup and restore network settings.

        • @Clear: Thank you.

  • just activated my ESET key to replace my unlimited "trial" period and works fine

test it out make a file and place

    X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

in it.. save it, it will be removed straight away

  • Still have not received a single key and I signed up about 45 minutes after the post was made, before it was even near the front page.

    • I just signed up 3 times and got 3 keys within seconds

      • What email domain are you using? Gmail?

        • I use gmail - and got mine in seconds.

        • @GregMonarch:

I used gmail as well, I think there's just something wrong with the server. Bouncing certain IP Addresses and not sending emails to them.

  • I used Yahoo mail, not getting anything after 24 hours.

  • I registered with 3 different emails and I got nothing.
I just tried with my google email and it says "Licenses are not available at this moment. Please come back later"
does anyone have a spare license?

  • Will e good to have this for windows

  • Licenses are not available via direct registration on this site, to claim your license please contact [email protected].

well they figured that out very slowly

  • For those that this isn't working with, remember the 6 month deal atm for ESET > https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/323087
Signed up to this forgetting this deal was a thing, but on second thoughts glad I did because this seems a bit hit and miss

  • Worked for me…

  • ESET finally got back to me after 2 weeks of wait and sent me a year's worth license.
