Nice deal, but hanging out for a ThinkPad 13 Gen 2, less weight.

  • Great price TA! Got any similar deals on the E570 model?

    • +2

I'm interested in the E570 too. I'm looking for a laptop with a number pad.

      • Same.

        • Same ^2

  • Damnit!!!!

  • Damn, I have the same with 8gb RAM. It's been great so far, highly recommended. This keyboard is streets ahead of any other laptop keyboard I've used.

    • Mind telling me how well it runs games? Just wondering if Civ 6 would be playable (even on minimum settings) so I can play it in bed :)

      • Pretty sure civ5 is heavily CPU weighted. If so, the i7 should be more than fine, especially on lower settings.

Edit: Actually, looking at some other threads, I don't know if the 940mx will hold up to even the lower settings.

      • I haven't really played any graphically intensive games. I play football manager which kind of runs similarly to Civ. It runs pretty well, I'm going to get Civ soon ish, next time it's on special. I'd say it'll be good enough for Civ.

      • I've got a Xiaomi Mi Air which has (i believe) the same 940MX card. I play Civ 6 no problems - even above minimum settings. Sure once things get hectic later in the game there can be the occasional stutter, but it's not exactly a twitch response game so it's no bother. I've turned off some of the animations which helps I guess, but I would recommend doing that anyway (once you've seen them a thousand times they get old).

  • damn i wish i had some cash to splash because id probably get this.

  • Know nothing about this stuff but is this entry level, middle or advanced piece of year?

Would this be better than a mac? Opinions appreciated.

    • +13

Unless you plan on wearing a beret all day, everything is better than a MAC.

this would be middle tier, however it's got great specs for its price - an i7 7th gen, 16gb ram and a 256gb hdd. It's only downside is the weight, which is a bit heavier than your normal ultrabooks

      • +6

Only thing I liked about the mac is smooth performance.

I've had alot of meltdowns with Windows over the years…

        • +9

the problem is, people compare $500 windows laptops/PCs against $1500 macs. cheapest mac laptop is what $1500. cheapest windows is like $200

        • @xEnt: to be fair, you could get Mac laptops below $900 before they raised their prices, and my two $1500 computers still have problems with windows because it is windows, not because of the hardware

        • +1

@mnermner: yeah i remember the $900 macbook airs a few years ago. literally no change except the minor spec bumps but they are now $1500.

        • +3

Maybe among swift and Ruby developers, but where I've worked, the iOS/mac guys are the minority.

Apple is hated among many software developers for the amount of hoops they force us to jump through.

        • @idonotknowwhy: Hoops like what? IMO, Windows is the worst OS to dev on. There still isn't even a decent, stock terminal option. The whole Ubuntu on Windows seems to be going in the right direction, but its far from perfect. Not really a fan of the state of C/C++ on Windows either… code that compiles and works as expected on macOS/Linux is great until you go to Windows, which doesn't even have something as simple as arc4random_uniform(), among others.

        • @idonotknowwhy: …What hoops? I've recently switched to MacOS and software development (even in Visual Studio) is ridiculously easy compared to Windows.

        • +2

Agree, I switched to Mac 4 years ago, never looked back. Boosted my productivity 200% easily.

All kickass devs I've known use Mac.

Having said those, Macbook Pro prices are horendous! I am still hanging on to my 2013 MBP and it still kicks ass, but it ran out of depreciation…

        • +1

@idonotknowwhy: LOL what hoops? Have u ever used brew, npm, mvn, gradle, sdkman, docker, git…, or managed 4 Java versions 6 7 8 9 at the same time… just to name a few.

All the Windows devs in my company recently asked for Mac when they were asked which laptop they would like to use.

Apple is only hated among iOS devs (not software devs) because of their outrageous apps release and review process, but they are getting better.

        • +1

@dtrang: yeah, iOS development is actually great, compared to Android - no AppCompat, able to use new libraries, etc. App submission process is just meh, and super inconsistent.

People hate on macOS here, but for developers, it seems to be the best option. Hell, Google's engineers use MacBooks…

        • +2

@dtrang: yeah. macOS is great. If you can, Hackintosh is ideal. I have less issues on Sierra Hackintosh than the Windows boot volume. GF recently switched to a MacBook after me telling her how much better it is for years and her thinking I was just talking them up. Doesn't look like she'll be going to Windows any time soon.

At least if you're buying a MacBook, Apple offer great customer support, replaced a logic board out of warranty (27 months from purchase), at no cost. They even expedited it because I told them I had a deadline. Impeccable, compared to Samsung who wanted me to ship and SSD at my expense (after failing to email postage details initially), so they could examine it and determine if it was covered under warranty, and if not, I'd have to cover return shipping.

      • its SSD

    • +4

Mac vs PC dont really compare.
If you only have to do work which Mac supports and have the budget then they do it better than anything, plus great resale.
Mac is as useful as a brick at a lot of tasks and industry specific software though.

This is a midrange laptop, with not the best reliability and support. But it is very high bang for buck.

      • I don't know. Not to fan over Macs or anything, but what kind of industry tasks would they be useless in? You can install Windows, attach an eGPU or whatever and you're good to go. TB3 grants you 40Gbps of I/O, which is enough to use any GPU. CPU is probably the biggest bottleneck, but then again, unless you're buying one of those laptops where a desktop class processor has been put into a laptop with a big battery and lots of cooling, you probably know that mobile CPUs aren't all that fancy.

      • +1

quite like comparing a car and a boat, it depends on where you are going to.

    • +1

Depends what you want to use it for. Office work this thing will have zero problems. Light 3d gaming likewise. In general it would be very responsive and fast. Lenovo build quality is my only issue, the E540 I had didnt hold up great in terms of the plastic chassis parts on the exterior but that was mostly cosmetic. One reason why macs are percieved to perform better is because they are less exposed to bloat and malware over time, so they dont see the slowdown as windows does. Solution is just to scan your windows compy with malwarebytes and stuff occasionally. And not click OK on every prompt on the internet .

    • Mac vs PC is a preference thing to your work. Most of the time both can do the same job/tasks. Biggest difference are the Apps that are "exclusive" to the platform like Final Cut Pro X for Macs only or some AAA games that only run on Windows. There's also some hardware differences but thats can also be between every manufacturer.

There are solid Windows ultrabooks that are around or just expensive as Apple's Macbooks. E.g Dell XPS line, Razor Blade etc.

Apple's Macs also have a benefit of running Windows native too via bootcamp. Conversely you can build a hackintosh (Mac running on unofficial PC components but that's a workaround and not really supported by the OS or Apple. Your mileage may vary with stability.

In the end, its a preference as you can do most tasks on whatever platfor - even Linux.

      • does crypto scam affect macs as well?

        • +2

No, the windows versions of Crypto scams do not and its incompatible with Macs (since they are mostly .executables which do not run on Macs)…eventually a variation for Macs will perhaps be released in the future.

    • +1

If you are neutral on the operating system (or prefer Mac OS) then a MacBook Pro is a nicer product (build quality, portability, battery life, screen and touchpad in particular). It's also (almost) double the price.

I would argue this is a high-medium spec machine but would do everything minus heavy video/graphics work and gaming very easily/quickly.

In terms of hardware value-for-money this is exceptional.

Is this cheaper than building your own Desktop with similar specs?? If so, why do people still custom build desktops?

    • because for desktop you can start with 8Gb and add stuff later. Not to mention all PCI cards.

    • +3

lol this is a laptop - why are you comparing to desktops.
      Laptops cost more than desktops

    • +3

This is a dual core cpu. Benchmarking puts this ~35% behind the current gen i3 desktop. Even the fastest i7 laptop processor is just marginally faster than a current gen i3.

      • +1

Yes, I've gotta stop automatically thinking i7 = Quad Core when i comes to mobile processsors.

      • +1

I think you are forgetting about Intel's HQ designated laptops, they are quad core…

        • Yes, this isn't a HQ thought. And even the HQs are tuned to a lower clockspeed. The cheapest i7-7700HQ is also around double this (probably $1500).

        • +2

@Fiximol: Just in ref. to your best laptop i7 'Marginally faster than i3' comment, the HQ models run with around only 20% less performance compared to their desktop counterparts. (In case anyone out there wants a quad core laptop)

    • Thanks for the explanation…I wasn't aware CPUs for laptops and desktops were different…

    • Desktops don't try to keep heat or power down ….just processing up ……so you get more punch per dollar with a desktop.

    • +3

No, an equivalent benchmarking desktop is a lot cheaper.
Desktop specs are totally different since laptops (unless big fan loaded gaming laptops) are heat throttled.

This is an i7U too, which is a bit of a misrepresentation of the i7 name. U's are actually only half of an i7 so is far weaker than a real i7. Advantage of an i7U over an i5 is that they do their job with better power efficiency, so longer battery life and less heat throttling.

The tradeoff is that a laptop is portable and can run on battery.

It is a good value laptop, but if portability and space isnt a factor then a desktop at the same price will mop the floor with it.

    • lol, you are crushing a 5 stars yaris with 5 stars Land cruiser, why buy a land cruiser as Yaris is much cheaper and 5 stars?

    • -3

      CPU: Pentium G4560 $77
MB: No thrills LGA 1151 $80
      RAM: 16GB DDR4 $150
Case+PSU combo: Cheap branded combo $70
      SSD: ~$100 on eBay deals
      GPU: GT 710 $44

Shop around and use deals, totals around $500. Add a generic screen + etc and it's around $600-650.

I'd recommend a higher end graphics card, but the 710 basically compares with the 940MX - both are terrible for gaming.

tl;dr: it's a great deal, but you're still paying ~$150-200 for extras you may or may not need (portability, battery, pre built, etc).

      • No, just no.

      • +3

Once you've spent the extra on Windows (legitimate, not msdn/"$15 OEM" etc), WiFi adapter (2x2 AC, not just a generic N adapter), a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and this deal is brilliant value. Portability, battery, and the prebuilt nature comes free after that, and you don't have to shop around for parts.

The 940MX is also a lot faster than the 710, but as you said, still not for gaming.

        • Yeah, which is what I meant by "$200 for extras you may or may not need". You may not need wifi, portability, battery, etc. Windows is a factor, but my assumption is if they're building a computer they know how to obtain legitimate keys free/cheap. (For example free student keys, $20 education/work keys, etc). Note I don't mean fishy OEM keys.

And yeah, I recommended 710 as both are useless for gaming. They're basically both just "display a picture" cards. If it was an actual build I'd recommend a 750, they're around $80-100 these days.

Note I'm buying one of these laptops - for me the portability is more than worth it, but that doesn't mean it is for everyone. :P

  • +2

If only it had a better GPU, would have purchased. I'll keep waiting…

    • Whats the GPU ?

      • the graphics card in this 940m

        • 940MX is a notable upgrade over the 940M

but heat and therefore size/weight would kill it

    • -1

Heat from better GPU will kill Lenovo E series, literally, because they have a really bad fan

      • Heat from better GPU will kill Lenovo E series, literally, because they have a really bad fan

You just showed you have no idea what you're talking about. What does the fan have to do with it? A fan is only one part of the cooling system with the most critical the heat sink.

The fan is also matched to the purpose, if this had a higher performing GPU it would have a fan and heatsink combo to match.

        • tks mate. I was actually trying to refer to cooling system but couldnt find the word. The original word I tend to use is cooler but laptop has no cooler, i refer to the fan instead. If you know things, why don't you try to hook E series with better GPU then run games at max setting to test it yourself? E series have bad cooling is a fact mate.
Where did I claim I know everything btw?

        • -2

          @hoangvu:

If you know things, why don't you try to hook E series with better GPU then run games at max setting to test it yourself? E series have bad cooling is a fact mate.

Sigh…. What did I say…. The cooling system is matched to the hardware so a faster GPU would see a larger cooling system used to compensate.

Is it transferable? Does this mean then the office won't be accessible on my old laptop?

    • just install office and login using your work details

    • Which version are you running? 2013, Office 365 etc?

      • MS office professional plus 2013.

        • There are a few ways.

          • You can install it from the disc if one was included
          • Log into Office here if you registered online when you installed it

Or we can extract the key and use an ISO.

well done TA, i just wish my laptop needed replacing

  • Extended warranties are scams

    • Everything's a scam.

      • +1

if you think all of a sudden after 12 months you have no claim to a refund or replacement then good luck and enjoy all your paid extended warranties on your products

        • +1

Extended warranties have been a lifesaver after 2 or 3 years many many times. Had a first gen Surface refunded the full amount very recently.

        • @Clear:
          First-gen Surface? Eww…

        • @Kangal: 2012 were different times. Basically got 4 years out of it for free in the end.

        • @Clear:
Yeah, that was around the time I got my Toshiba Protege…. a Sandy Bridge Ultrabook.
It was cheaper, light/lighter, cooler, faster, and more featured.

Being an early adopter is to be an expensive beta tester.

PS Your avatar is playing tricks to my eyes

        • @Clear: you bought an extended warranty when you would have been able to get a refund or replacement on it anyway

          https://www.choice.com.au/shopping/consumer-rights-and-advic…

        • +1

@wingwang: They threw it in. Only time I really recommend extended warranties is something like a HP/HPe Care Pack.

    • Usually most decent credit cards provide additional warranty on top of the manufacturers offering.

If you have a CC, and lets face it if you are OzB then there is a good chance you do then I agree an extended warranty may become a waste of money.

    • That's like saying insurance is a scam

      • Because it is! when the time comes to pay back they all turn backs or try to find ways to avoid it but would gladly take it from your account.

  • +3

Awesome price…just wish it was 400-500g lighter

  • +2

how do people view this compared to the Acer deal TA posted two days ago?

    • I suppose this would ruin moderate games
      That wouldn't

      • +1

        That's a very confusing misspelling
