  • Post Updated.

  • Seems like a good price, but can anyone vouch for the quality and honesty of Midas as mechanics? Nothing worse than going to a dishonest mechanic who tells you that you have 1000 things wrong with your car when it's actually perfectly fine.

    • Never used them but they are a franchise and any dishonest practices hurts their brand as a whole. Obviously they want to drive business through cheap servicing by trying to upsell other mechanical services however they promise to advise and seek approval before doing anything

      • It's illigal to ask you to pay for unapproved works, hope they do then drive away no more to pay.

Used Midas a long time ago, and "apparently" one of my indicators stopped working and simply needed a bulb change. Said yes to it over the phone.

Turning up at Midas, they charged $10 for the lamp change.
    With a $88 labour charge.

They're just as bad as KTAS. Avoid if you can.
There's a reason they're resorting to group buying sites for business.

They're a franchise, just because one is bad, doesn't mean all the rest are.

      It's only 4 stores.

  • What about MIDAS FAWKNER, you know Silvio, Jerry etc?

I had a bad experience with those guys. Got the car there for a service with a groupon. 3 hours later I got a call about all the problems they found. According to those guys there was an issue with the brakes requiring about $500 for change of fluid + adjustment (no parts replacement), the battery tested "borderline", so I was offered a good deal for about ~$130 (that's kinda ok, in case you need a battery), and if I wanted to take care of my safety - new tyres, about $500 for the set. Oh, and wiper blades for about $90. Told the guy just to change the oil and when I have $1200+ to throw away I'll be back.
To clarify - the car was less than 3 years old, done about 16000 kms and properly cared for. The battery is still good, more than 2 years after their advice to get a new one, the brakes are fine, nothing noticeable nor reported by the computer. The tyres are still good, maybe will change them soon, but they are on close to 30000 kms now. When I went to get the car I asked the guy why they recommended new tyres, we took a look together and his comment was "I don't know what my colleague measured".

    Stay away. Far away.

    • Same deal with servicing at dealers. Was told my tyres are neary gone which is impossible when I just changed it a few months ago. Told it for servicing again a year later and they said my tyres are new almost brand new. Didn't realised tyres can heal themselves after a year.

    • Who would you recommend.

      • The alternative is your mum and dad service centre who probably use same upsell tactics or manufacturer service i.e. Toyota Hyundai ford etc. where the service unless u have some capped arrangement cost $300 - $1200 to begin with

    • It's not illegal to try and drum up business. Perhaps poor ethically but it's obvious they provide these to get business through the door. I've been to places where the service was $149 and they do the same so it's no reason to neg the deal. All you have to do is say no and they shouldn't bother you or better yet tell them ur only getting the service today cos it was cheap and you will take the car to ur regular guy to look after from here.

Sorry to disagree, but two of their main points were related to my (and my family's) safety - tyres and brakes. Using people's fear may not be illegal, but in my eyes is a very dirty way to "drum up business" and deserves no leeway at all, neg fully earned. Moreover, after lying so blatantly to me how can I trust any work they do? How can I trust that they even serviced my car properly?

About the more expensive shops - how is charging more money any excuse to do the same s@it?

        • Hence my point not ethical but not illigal either. But my point is you can also pay these chaps $149 everyday (and many people do) for the same service and get drilled with upselling tactics just the same. So for those that can handle the bait.. the $39 is a fair bargain!

Just because the deal isn't for everyone doesn't make it any less of a deal.

  • I would never trust these car servicing coupons. Have tried them twice, shit experiences both times.

  • what about the extra oil..not all cars use 5litres

    • Pay a Surcharge

  • used the same deal last year,
Car was done and returned in 25 mins saying everything is ok and don't need much to be done.
so far as car wash is concerned, i was told looks like raining soon this afternoon so whats the point washing it!!!!!
    This was at Midas Essendon.
Would pay three times the price but will never visit this place again.

Used a similar coupon for Midas highpoint (listed in this deal). Can second what the others said. They barely even serviced it when I picked the car up again. Checked the oil when I got home and it was still the same colour as when I took it to them so they didn't change the oil.

They also listed a bunch of things that needed to be fixed, a few of which I had fixed not long ago and definitely should not need fixing again.

I decided to write off the cost and it wasn't worth complaining to them about, but I learner a lesson.
