Just saw this. I don't know how good the hotel is but the reviews are very good.
Price wise it's pretty good
$600 per night or $800, per night for over water

Sometimes other sales have them for about $700 per night
. But they don't include meals or alcohol or speedboat. (Speedboat can be quite expensive)

Rooms seem to have gone up in price according to agoda. Not sure why.

So there you have it folks.
Also 5%ish off with cash rewards
There is also a 10% off travel max $40 code expiring at midnight tonight but it didn't work for me

You also get to watch a Sophie falkwner video. Plus. Gain a few kg since they are providing 6 meal per day!

Anyone actually stayed at this hotel?

$800/day for booze & food, sounds like a challenge to me.

Retired people spending the extra cash so they can get the pension.
Apparently with the new rules if you have between $400k and $1m in assets and super as a couple you are worst off than if you only had $400k or less. So they are all going on cruises and luxury holidays while they can!

      • Is your house considered an asset?

        • +1

Not the primary residence. Atleast it wasn't

      • They would have invested all their money in gold and keep it safe in a bunker somewhere.

      • +1

I'm sick of people with large assets mooching on part pensions.

The point of super and assets is to be drawn down in retirement once you run out of it in 10 20 30 years you can get pension

But these schemes of having huge assets in the hundreds thousands and multi millions but still being able to get a pension and final insult is die with a huge reserve to inherit to family despite sucking up tens/hundreds of thousands in Pensions at the expense of those that really needed it.

Why should someone who works hard all their life and saves and invests it be disadvantaged and miss out on a pension vs someone who doesn't work and claims Centrelink ? I think the wrong incentive is out there to encourage people to work hard and save for their future.

        • @lousy:

What do you claim to stand for?
Everyone with a job should be able to claim centrelink the same?

Lindsay Fox should be fully entitled to the same pension as a Vietnam vet that could never work not by choice?

        • @carlb: pension is not the same as Centrelink. Centrelink exists as temporary relief for those who should be in the process of finding a job.
          Pension is for people's retirement.
Fact is that those who work, invest and save their whole life will be disadvantaged against people in similar jobs on similar earnings but who squander away their savings. It places an unfair onus on those willing to sacrifice in their youth , save and take risks to invest as if they are successful they will miss out on their pension.
This will be bitter to those who have sacrificed a lot in their earlier years to build up an asset base whether it be for themselves or their children.

        • @lousy:
Your alternative Fact is that those who work, invest and save their whole life will be disadvantaged against people in similar jobs on similar earnings but who squander away their savings.

Fact is that those who work, invest and save their whole life will be 'advantaged' against people in similar jobs on similar earnings but who squander away their savings.
As they will have the ability to fund their retirement with a greater weekly salary than those on a measly pension.
$1 Million in assets affords someone to live quite comfortably in retirement with $2000 a fortnight for 20 years. After which $1 million is depleted in 20 years those individuals can in 'Your words' have the same 'advantage' of all other pensioners.

A pension is not even close to that $2000 figure many pensioners reliant living on potato and offal (if any meat at all) and NO they do not all squander their money, all sorts of events can happen in ones life that swallows life savings.

one old school trend that is becoming more popular and I don't object to particularly in light of the retirement home scandals

Retired Couples taking 300+ day ocean cruises
it ends up being very very competitive value to a rental property+expenses+food etc

Cruise is All inclusive room turndown, food, entertainment, utilities.

  • Plus the expensive non-direct flights to Male :(

    • and they are very expensive! thought about but way too much.

      • Honestly it isn't so bad. I used to work there. Air Asia is the best option, fairly cheap out of the Gold Coast in Premium.

We stayed there in 2013 for our honeymoon when it was quite new and had mixed feelings.

As far as some of the islands in the Maldives go this is quite small and you may struggle for things to do unless you are happy snorkeling on the in house reef which is all but dead now. We had an over water Villa and found we snorkled all the time as there was nothing else to do to kill time until the next meal.

As far as value goes, we stayed there because of a pretty good travel industry discount and easily got our money worth, while this price being offered is higher I think you would still manage to eat and drink a large portion of that amount.

The staff there are fantastic and it is nice to be able to wander round eating and drinking without ever bringing your wallet.

One thing I found interesting is approx 90% of the guests are Chinese or Korean honeymooners who wore matching outfits everywhere they went - think matching his and hers hello Kitty outfits.

In summary if you find yourself always needing to do things there may be better alternatives with more activities, but if you are happy sunbaking, reading, eating and drinking this place is great and quite good value for money comparatively.

    • Thanks for the insight.

The reading comment just reminded me. Is there any wifi in either the over water or villa rooms?

      • +1

Yes there's WiFi in the over water bungalows, we recently stayed there for our honeymoon last year and wishing we were still there.

We found the snorkelling enjoyable, especially with the easy private access stairs from the bungalow. I agree with the comments by mickjor, except for the remark about nothing else to do till the next meal ;)

        • definitely on my bucket list

to be honest, for me it will be overwater bungalows or nothing,

need to be able to jump into the water from your living room/balcony

or even see the water and tropical fish through a glass window on the flooor

      really… ;)

    • Good feedback but I hope you put this comment to Maldives tourism board / Hotel :)

      Doesn't seem like it's worth $800 a night.
Even with all you can eat and drink there are other places you can go to get better value.

      They're Korean honeymooners :)

  • When I went with the now ex mrs in 2014 the boat trip (hour each way) from the airport to atoll was $500. There is a lot to do between meals if you have the cash but activities aren't cheap.

Think we spent $9k for 6 nights all up.

    • +1

Geez that's a very expensive honeymoon. No wonder why you're on Ozbargain.

      • Wasn't honeymoon, just a surprise holiday for my ex on her 30th.

        • Geez wonder what your honeymoon would be like if that is just a 30th

  • All you have to do to afford this is buy $6,000 worth of 50% off stuff, saving you $3,000 which you can use to pay for your Maldives holiday, simple.

    • +1

getting in touch with you feminine side I see :)

"Honey I saved $700 dollars today, Bought these shoes for $300 70% off"

we'll as a male I see that as You didn't need those shoes so you spent $300 end of story :)

    • +1

or not buy anything and paid $3000 straight off without spending another $3000 to save $3000.

  • You spend 15 hours on a plane to get there..
A seaplane transfer is magical and will whisk you off to a secluded island on a different atoll.

Personally I would avoid a speedboat transfer to an island right next to Male and all the industrialized parts of Maldives. Speedboat transfers are for the close islands to Male..

  • +1

If you're wanting something same-same/similar try Mauritius. Spent about $400 a night for all inclusive and it was awesome. Plus plenty to see and do around the island itself.

    • Fly via Jo'burg right? Or does Perth have a direct connection? Either way it'd be a long flight for those of us in the east.

      • +1

Can go via Perth, I went via Malaysia, also options via India/Sri Lanka. Yes its long but Male isn't that super close either and yet much more $$$$. You probably would get nicer beaches for that much money but it's just ridiculous.
I also went to Kapalai in Malaysia for an over water bungalow experience (with all inclusive food not drinks though). When you're a diver it's actually quite good value since it includes your dives too!

        • Cheers for the extra info, really handy to know.

  • Thanks OP, you saved me over $200!

Does anyone have a recommendation on getting there from Brisbane? Looking at spending a week somewhere else in Asia too.
