Mod note: Handling and shipping costs with Shopmate seem to be based on volumetric weight, however each quote seems to be inconsistent with pricing (i.e. different for each individual quote).

As such, you may be quoted a slightly differently from OP's price of $47.70.

UPD1: added all upgrade options at the end.
UPD2: price reduced on Amazon, updated description.
UPD3: price changed again, also added a quick review at the bottom.

Voted the best budget laptop in US, and despite having a generic name, this ultracheap laptop has a big community online.

it is the cheapest laptop (from a big reliable brand) with a FullHD IPS panel the money can buy.

also, one can install a 2.5 SATA SSD to expand storage, and increase RAM using second memory slot.

video of the upgrade:
https://youtu.be/kdeSMD1jwkM

it also sports:

  • removable battery
  • LAN port
  • USB 2.0 two ports
  • USB 3.0 one port
  • AC WLAN
  • Bluetooth 4.2
  • SD card slot
  • HDMI
  • 32 GB eMMC hard drive
  • 4 GB RAM
  • AMD E2-7110 CPU

sorry for typos, submitting from my mobile.

UPD1: Upgrade points:

  1. 2 accessible DDR3L SODIMM sockets on motherboard. Out of the box it comes with one 4 GB memory stick. You can install another 2 GB or 4 GB stick to increase RAM to 6 or 8 GB respectively, however I would say it's not worth it, because it'll also eat into your precious HDD space through hybernation file (~$30 AU for 4 GB stick)

  2. CD-ROM connector on the motherboard. You can easily add a 2.5 SATA SSD drive to this machine with help of one of those CD-ROM HDD caddies, people either installed the whole caddy, or just the tiny electronic component from it (who needs the additional weight?) to convert CD-ROM connector to 2.5 SATA connector. Me personally, I intend to install a 120 GB SSD into it, and install Windows from scratch onto it, leaving the eMMC drive as documents and downloads folders storage.

  3. The eMMC drive is not soldered, and is removable. It is connected using a standard HP laptop SATA connector. You can easily disconnect and remove the eMMC entirely to decrease weight and power consumption and run entirely from the installed SSD

OR get an HP SATA cable adapter (like this, but plenty of options exist: http://www.ebay.com/itm/815139-001-6017B0588901-HP-HARD-DRIV…) and install another SSD. Yes, you can have 2 SSD in this machine. Or an SSD and a spinning drive. Or whatever you may need.

Regarding performance, I checked Octane score on my home PC (Intel NUC with Celeron). Home PC has Octane score of ~6100. This machine gives ~8200. I am happy with my home PC performance, so I can't imagine I will be disappointed by this laptop.

Review of the device I received:
- good build quality
- a bit heavier than I expected
- screen is amazing, it was worth it!
- the fan goes on the moment the unit is powered up, but then slows down to a point I don't hear it at all
- performance is good so far.

    No ship to Australia?

    • delivery through ShopMate, it's in the title.

      • Don't think deals are allowed where you have to use a drop-shipper.

        • @Djkelly69

It is allowed, so long as the post includes name of the forwarder and the final price.

  • Anyone have one of these? Looking for a runaround for general use and nothing else fancy.

    • I will soon :) also, check out the reviews on YT

      • Yeah good point. Hope it goes well for you!

  • -1

It is not a normal SSD nor a normal M.2 SSD, it is an eMMC drive. On many laptops, this drive is soldered to the motherborad. On your machine, you can upgrade to 64GB only using part number: 903803-001.

    • watch the videos, mate. SSD can be installed in addition to the main eMMC.

        • well, they don't want you to upgrade, why would they tell you otherwise.

also, eMMC is not soldered on this model. russians upgraded it, too, using a special adapter, google is your friend.

when I get to my PC I will give the part number you need for this exercise.

otherwise any 2.5 sata ssd will fit for additional install.

    • They are not replacing the eMMC but the laptop is so cheap, it has the same body as other laptops that have cd drives. They are using a cd drive to ssd replacement, taking out the electronic portion and taping the ssd in because the bay replacement doesn't fit inside. It's a hack job so wouldn't be under warranty.

This is a laptop with a great screen but everything else is questionable.

I get you can upgrade the ram and ssd but in the end, you're still on a slow AMD quad from a generation ago.

For me the laptop actually works as a lot of what I do is via rdp etc but for the avg. person you're gonna run out of power.

At usd$199 its a no brainer really. But any more and its quesitonable.

    • +1

I would rather wait a bit looking at a decent panel, than work a bit faster on a crappy TN that gives me headache :)

and it's more powerful than the one I am replacing, so ticks all boxes for me :)

  • +1

when you factor in all the labour and cost of additional ssd/ram it ends up around some of the deals here

    • +1

yeah good luck finding a 14" laptop w/ fhd for under $500 though

    • hmm like what? if there was a decent laptop with FullHD IPS screen, I would probably have it already

  • That ship forwarding cost really kills the deal. The lil amd cpu does better than I expected.

    • I needed an IPS screen, what other options should have I considered? excluding Chinese noname crap :) yes, maybe I am asking too much.

      • Not many options unfortunately. Full HD IPS screens are the one of the few reasons manufacturers can charge a premium for these days.

If you can settle with IPS HD screens then Inspiron 11 is ok.

        • I did, but 11 inch is too small for me.
I do lots of remote administration and development, so cpu on the unit itself matters little to me (as long as it can handle web, email, and YouTube, and it does), but the screen size and quality is of top importance.

  • Warning you guys…don't use shopmate..try something else..

    • +1

bad experience? I used them once, and they were ok

  • How do you calculate shopmate shipoing price?

    • there are package dimensions and weight on Amazon page, and there's calculator on ShopMate site. I connected the dots.

I hope they are correct :) I bumped up dimensions, and the estimate did not change.

    • and my package will be in the ShopMate warehouse on Monday, so I will know for sure.

      • So how much was shipping, kasaresj?

        • they are slow, haven't updated me yet. should be tomorrow..

        • 57.65. however I applied the WelcomeBack15% voucher, and got 7.90 discount. more than I thought, anyway.

  • funny that the price went down on Monday, and I complained to Amazon that they dropped the price after I bought it, and I would like a refund for the difference.
turns out they don't offer price match, as their prices go up and down all the time, according to them.
however they gave me a gift voucher for the difference, and I used it to buy SSD :) now the price went up again, so I got my gift card just in time :)

    • Interesting. I tried to get them to refund me a product that they hadn't even shipped yet which went down by $10 and they refused. They ended that practice a year or two ago.

      • yeah, they refused, I said goodbye and closed the chat, and left a negative feedback. In about 20 minutes they sent me an e-mail with a "second chance" link, which led to a new online chat session. I told them, well, look guys, I'm only here because I got a "second chance" link and clicked it out of curiosity, so if you're not going to change your mind, don't waste my time. And they said, give us 5 minutes. Then they said that "look, we don't do this any more. But for this first time we'll give you a voucher for the difference, but this is all you will ever get.". Oh well, I got the money back, so I am happy! now I know that the stuff should only be bought from Amazon when the price goes down. Or buy and don't look back to check the price to avoid disappointment! ha ha

  • Just a heads up for anyone contemplating using ShopMate as part of this deal…

I understand ShopMate use an indefinable/unpredictable "volumetric weight" calculation which makes it virtually impossible to get an accurate estimate of costs prior to delivery. In my experience, delivering this product to metro Sydney cost considerably more than $47.70 or even $57.65 - coming in at $82.35 before the WELCOMEBACK15% discount code or an even $70.00 if you are eligible for the discount.

At $47.70 to deliver, it was already expensive - at $82.35, it's the kind of outright gouging one might expect from an inefficient ex-government department which screws over its agents, but is happy to pay it's CEO $5,600,000 per annum. Accordingly, if paying $80 is the norm for delivering a 3.okg box which they calculate as being 5.6kg, I'll consider the extra payment to be cost of learning not to ever use them again, and telling everyone I know likewise.

Forewarned is forearmed, so I recommend anyone interested have a look at the many and varied concerns about Shopmate as detailed in the Choice article below, which also includes some summaries of cheaper, faster and more secure alternative freight forwarding services.

    https://www.choice.com.au/shopping/online-shopping/buying-on…

    • outrageous, mine was much lower! I am very sad to hear this, I personally used them only once before, and I was happy (but the item was rather small, a watch).
what would be a better option? I never ever used another forwarder to Oz, so I wouldn't know (wakarimasen). I used the YouShop in New Zealand a few times, same kind of thing, they are part of NZ Post, they were kind of OK, too.

      • Yeah it was a bit rude. Thankfully, the price for a 14" IPS laptop was fantastically cheap (especially for someone who already had a spare 4GB SODIMM and 256GB SSD lying around to take care of the two most popular upgrades), so I'm happy enough.

I can't recommend alternative freight forwarders from first hand usage, but the link above details some of the alternatives, whilst there is a lot of discussion of the different providers in the forums here and at Whirlpool.

Regardless, thanks for the deal, kasaresj. I look forward to hearing what you think of the unit once it arrives, and how you go with your own upgrades. I'm curious to see if the caddy is required for a SSD or if just the connector is required, since ebay is full of local sellers who can provide the latter. Cheers.

        • sure, I will do a tiny review here when I get it.
I got the SSD from Amazon (already arrived, still in packaging), so I am just waiting for the unit itself, and the caddy.
The unit should be here either this Friday, or on Monday, but the caddy can take longer :) as usual, it's the cheapest component you end up waiting for.
I plan to create a recovery USB out of the box, and give the laptop a go, just checking the screen quality and overall performance.
In case I don't like it, I'll restore to factory image and sell it immediately while it's new :) SSD will go, too.
If I like it, I intend to:
          - disconnect eMMC completely
          - install W10 afresh onto SSD (still have to wait for the caddy or cable, both are in mail)
          - if all goes well, connect the eMMC again, reformat it and use it as second drive (say, for Documents and Downloads folders).
Will update on how it goes.

        • by the way, take pictures and measurements of your box, and a picture of what's inside.
I will do the same. Maybe if our boxes are identical, you can file a complaint to AusPost, and get some of your money back! (I hope they don't charge me more instead).

        • 48 x 35 x 7 cm box, and inside there's nothing apart from the HP box.

        • @kasaresj:

This may be the cause of my excess shipping charge. The 44x35x7cm HP box, came packed inside a ridiculously oversized 52x43x17cm second box. I'd bother investigating whether it was Shopmate or Amazon (who I've ordered from dozens of times and have never received such loose, oversized packaging) who (re)packed but my time is worth more than ever the inconvenience of ever using Shopmate again. Lesson kearned.

At least I've got my new toy and can start playing!

        • @UncleRico: did it have the Amazon tape on the outer box? If yes, it was Amazon, if not, it was ShopMate. Amazon always pack their boxes with Amazon tape.

odd. mine had almost zero gaps, box in a box. Maybe Amazon ran out of matching boxes, and stuffed yours into a bigger one..

        • @kasaresj:

It was an Amazon box, but had been resealed by with Shopmate "Opened by USA warehouse" tape.

          Que sara sara…

  • My unit landed in Sydney 20 minutes ago. Let's see how long does it take AUS POST to deliver it from Sydney to Melbourne.

    • Sunshine West just now. Got a text, and it's coming tomorrow! afternoon, most likely. stay tuned :)

      • delivered 20 minutes ago. all in all took almost 2 weeks from the initial order.

  • upgraded mine to an SSD (SanDisk SSD Plus), installed Windows 10 onto it in 10 minutes. so far very happy with the unit.

    • Glad to hear it, kas. Mine is due in tomorrow.

Are you planning another drive or any RAM? Did you need to use the caddy or just the connector cable?

I'm curious to see how good we can make this thing using spare parts…

      • oops hit a wrong button, see my reply below this one.

here's the drivers web page: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-14-an000…

and here's how to turn off adaptive brightness (after you install AMD graphics driver):
        1. open start menu, type AMD
        2. select AMD Radeon settings
        3. in the bottom left corner hit Preferences. Then hit Radeon Additional Settings. Wait a few seconds, another window will open
        4. in the new window select Power -> PowerPlay
        5. untick "Enable Vari-Bright", and hit Apply.
        6. that's it, done!

  • hey, Rico, great stuff! hope you've got a screwdriver ready :) there's a dozen screws you need to undo very soon. don't forget that you will need to take off the rubber feet, too.

I suggest that the first thing you do when you boot it (before opening it) is install latest BIOS.

I used the electronic board from a caddy to install my ssd drive, and put 2 velcro dots onto it to secure it in.

it is the only thing that I did inside, and it was very easy.

I had the W10 install usb drive ready (they take a while to get created), and did a fresh W10 install, took 10 minutes to do.

then I suggest you boot it, do the minimal setup and leave it to download and install all available updates. maybe install the touchpad driver first, though.

when updates are done, install latest amd graphics driver, Intel wireless and Bluetooth drivers (get those from amd and Intel websites), and the rest of drivers from HP web page (I will give you that when I get to the office).

At last, I deleted the largest partition on the eMMC(left boot and recovery partitions intact, they are small), created a new volume there, and moved Documents and Download folders there to utilize that extra space.

AMD driver enables adaptive brightness by default, I was annoyed by it, I will tell you how to turn it off.

    • Outstanding job with the deal, updates and review kasaresj. You've been very thorough and it is much appreciated - it was a great first post and the deal deserved more than a dozen votes.

I'll crack out my screwdrivers and see what tips and tricks I can uncover in the coming days. Cheers…

      • Thanks! hope it goes well for you.
Mine is already stable, all updates installed, Office installed, I am happy with the performance on what I do.

  • Would this one be the same? Only USD 199.99, but not sure if this has the same screen?

    https://www.target.com/p/hp-laptop-computer-amd-e2-7110-quad…

    • Doesn't look the same, for example:
      - screen resolution is HD, not FullHD
      - wireless is b/g/n, not ac

So no, I would say it's a simpler model.

  • hmm not sure why I cannot edit my deal (maybe I forgot where that button is?) but here's a recent update:
    - laptop has been running for 2 weeks now, I am extremely happy with it
    - the best laptop screen I have ever seen in my life!
    - colors are crisp clear (automatic color temperature setting in AMD radeon settings)
    - performance is great for the price
    - I ended up installing another 4 GB of RAM
    - I ended up installing VMware Player, so this is now also running a Windows 7 virtual machine without an issue
    - No issues playing YouTube videos
    - Great for working with e-mails
    - Great for web browsing
    - Great for remote access
    - I am taking it with me soon on a trip, so we'll see how useful it is in trips
    - installed MyTube windows app from one of the older deals, it's great for downloading YouTube videos for watching later
    - all in all I am very happy with my purchase! I hope the others who got this machine have a positive experience, too!

  • Hi guys,

I received mine last week. Very happy with it too so far. I still have to install an SSD and maybe another 4GB RAM when it's already open?

Where did you buy the caddy to connect the SSD from? Would take a long time from China, should have ordered it right away… I'm based in Melbourne

Any good deals on SSD and RAM?

    • if you're in Melbourne, you can have mine, I was afraid that the caddy will not arrive in time, and ordered another one from Australia. however my fears were in vane, and it arrived on time.

so I have an extra one, and I am also in Melbourne, pm me if you're interested.

      • How do I send a pm here? Where in Melbourne are you?

        • Where did you find one in Australia, kasaresj? All I can find is a bunch of Chinese ebayers selling part# 6017B0588901, so am reluctant to (belatedly!) order and wait. Is there a better option to convert the CDROM connector to an SSD, since contrary to some reports, the lack of a cutout on the laptop shell would make it impossible to ever install a CDROM and since I won't be using caddy, all I really want is the connector between the drive and the mobo.

Also, can you guys confirm that the RAM upgrade works. Again, belatedly watching some of the videos and they talk about the mobo only operating in single channel mode and so not reading a 2nd stick of RAM.

        • @UncleRico: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2nd-HDD-Caddy-Hard-Drive-Disk-SAT…

They claim to be in NT, but I think they still order from abroad and then send on. Ask Franco above, he has mine now, how he fared. It looks like it's easy to unscrew the connector from the caddy on this model (I had to break mine, metal one ordered from China, works fine for me!).

you can buy any caddy really, all of them have the connector that converts CDROM SATA to HDD SATA which is what you need. Just discard the caddy housing, and install SSD directly onto the connector.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdeSMD1jwkM&t=230s

just like in this video above.

The memory upgrade worked for me, I can see 8 GB of RAM in mine. It's being used fine, because I am running virtual machines, too, so the usage goes up to 7 GB.

Single channel only means that they are not accessed in parallel, not a big deal in this machine.

  • so, how did the owners of this device fare? happy or not? tell your story!

I am very happy with mine, the screen by far outweighs any shortcomings of the device, the main of which is relatively short battery life.

however I knew from the start that this is not going to be a long performer, I bought it for its screen and good looks, and the screen is really great, better than I expected! I have an IT job, and looking at computer screens all day I can't compromise on their quality.

at the same time I believe that no one really needs a powerful computer, unless you want to do things that they tell you should want. it's all marketing. cheapest machine does what I need, and more. and finally I got a great screen thrown into the package!

I truly hope that this becomes a trend, and we see quality panels in future bottom of the budget laptops.

  • Hi Kasaresj,

I am very happy with the laptop. Thank you again for the caddy, it was very easy to install and setup. I have upgraded to 8GB Ram as well.

  • there's a new contender on board:

    Acer Aspire 1, 14" Full HD, Intel Celeron N3450, 4GB RAM, 32GB Storage, Windows 10 Home, A114-31-C4HH https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0746NCNSG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Ga7M…

also a 14 inch FullHD IPS panel, also 219 US dollars, but:
    - intel quad core processor
    - promised up to 9 hours battery life
    - thin and light chassis
    - ships directly to AU for 20 USD

but it's so new it's pre-order only, and no information on upgreadability.

I will report when I get mine.

I am getting one because I already gave the HP to my friends who can't afford a laptop :) so I am off to find the next bargain ha ha
